After the broadcast, confirm the VOD in Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer, then download it or export it to YouTube if you want a copy beyond Twitch’s retention period. The archive setting is not retroactive: a stream that was not saved cannot normally be recovered from Twitch.
Turn on Twitch’s VOD archive before streaming

Open your Twitch Stream Settings.

Enable Store Past Broadcasts. Twitch says this feature is not on by default.

Check that the setting is enabled before each broadcast. If a VOD was not captured, switching the setting on afterward will not create it.
Twitch calls saved past broadcasts VODs. They let viewers watch a recording after the live stream has ended, subject to Twitch’s retention policy.

Check that the VOD saved

After the stream ends, open Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer.

Look for the new past broadcast and open it to verify that the recording is available.

If it is missing, check that Store Past Broadcasts was enabled and review stream health and configuration. Twitch notes that an unstable network or incorrect stream configuration can prevent a broadcast from saving; Twitch Inspector can help investigate stream problems.
Enabling the archive does not guarantee every stream will be saved. If no VOD appears, Twitch’s normal creator workflow may not be able to recover it from its servers.

How long Twitch keeps past broadcasts
Twitch’s currently published retention periods depend on account category. These are Twitch policy limits, not a guarantee that a particular broadcast saved successfully.

These periods are stated in Twitch’s On-Demand Content help page and can change. Save a separate copy before the applicable period ends if you need to retain the recording.

Keep a copy beyond Twitch’s retention window
Twitch documents two ways to preserve a VOD elsewhere: download it to local storage, or connect Twitch and YouTube accounts and export it directly. Twitch-hosted VODs are convenient for immediate replay, but remain subject to Twitch’s retention period and the possibility of a failed save.

Twitch’s documented download and export options are described in its VOD help page. The source does not establish that any one option is universally better or permanent.

Download or export from Video Producer

Open Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer and select the past broadcast.

Choose Twitch’s available download option to save a local copy, or connect your Twitch and YouTube accounts and use the export option.

Verify the resulting file or destination copy before relying on it as your only archive.
Check rights before sharing or reusing a VOD
A VOD being available does not mean every part of it is cleared for reuse. Review music, game audio, video clips, and other third-party material before making a recording public or uploading it to another platform. Twitch says creators are responsible for rights to copyrighted material in streams and recorded videos. YouTube says Content ID claims can be made after a live stream ends if the creator archives it. Detection, muting, or an export does not grant permission. Copyright requirements vary by jurisdiction and circumstances; consult the platform guidance and secure the rights you need.
