Verify a large video at three separate points: check the local file, confirm the uploaded video has finished processing and plays on YouTube, then test the actual OBS-to-YouTube live path. Each check catches different failures; a completed upload or valid file header alone does not prove the stream will work.
1. Preserve a trusted comparison point
If you still have the original file, record its file size and a cryptographic checksum before uploading. If your workflow later gives you a downloaded or staged copy, compare it with that recorded checksum. A match shows that the two files are byte-for-byte identical; it does not prove the original was complete or playable.
Do not call an upload checksum-verified unless the platform or workflow exposes checksums for both copies. A normal upload-complete status is not a checksum comparison.
2. Inspect and play the local video
Inspect the container and streams with FFprobe
FFprobe can report container and stream information and surface probe errors. Run:

ffprobe -hide_banner -show_format -show_streams input.mp4
Replace input.mp4 with the actual file path. Check that the reported format and duration make sense and that the expected video and audio streams are present. Exact output and behavior depend on your installed FFmpeg build and the file.
This is a metadata inspection, not proof that every frame decodes or that the program is watchable from start to finish.

Review the content, not just its metadata
For an important live event, play the file from beginning to end or perform a complete decode pass. Check that the picture and sound are present, the expected duration is there, audio remains synchronized with video, and the ending is intact. If time forces you to sample, inspect the beginning, middle, and end, and treat that as a limited check—not a full review.

After uploading, wait for processing to finish and open the uploaded video to test playback at the quality you need for the stream. YouTube’s Data API documents processingDetails as processing information and processingProgress as a value designed to be polled. That provides a way for API clients to check progress; it does not establish a particular current sequence of YouTube Studio screens or guarantee that every rendition is immediately available.

If playback fails or the required quality is not available, wait and check again before treating the video as ready. A processing status and a successful playback test answer different questions.
4. Test the real OBS-to-YouTube stream
- Schedule a restricted test. Before the event, arrange a private or otherwise appropriately restricted live test. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event. YouTube’s live encoder guidance also recommends checking upload speed and monitoring stream health.
- Check the OBS scene. Confirm the intended video is visible and moving in the scene. Verify that OBS is sending the intended audio source, not merely showing activity on a local meter.
- Check YouTube’s preview or test viewer. Confirm that the picture and sound arrive at YouTube. A local OBS preview or recording does not prove that the live encoder-to-platform path works.
- Watch health and playback. During the test, review YouTube’s stream-health messages and OBS for warnings or dropped frames. Listen and watch for audio/video sync problems, missing sound, freezes, or unexpected black frames.
- Fix and repeat. If you change a source, encoder setting, network connection, or media file, run the relevant part of the test again. A successful test only validates the setup and conditions you actually tested.
Format guidance: distinguish uploads from live encoding
YouTube’s upload recommendations include MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, AAC-LC or Opus audio, and placing the MP4 moov atom at the front (“Fast Start”). These are recommendations, not a guarantee that every other valid file will fail. Upload encoding recommendations are separate from live encoder bitrate recommendations; do not use an upload bitrate as though it were the required OBS live bitrate.

OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide, dated 2023-03-26, describes MKV as a flexible default recording container that can be remuxed, and fragmented MP4/MOV as potentially suitable for uploading to services such as YouTube. Container compatibility depends on the codecs and intended workflow. If an OBS-produced file fails upload or playback, inspect its actual streams and consult the relevant YouTube guidance. Remux or re-encode only when you have identified a concrete compatibility issue, and keep the original until you have checked the replacement.
Troubleshoot by identifying which check failed

Keep the checks separate
- A checksum comparison can establish identity between two copies, but not that the original itself is valid.
- A metadata probe checks reported structure; playback or a complete decode checks content.
- YouTube processing progress does not replace testing playback at the needed quality.
- A working upload does not prove the OBS-to-YouTube live path is healthy.
