To stream a rotating set of prerecorded home walkthroughs as YouTube Live, play the files in a streaming encoder such as OBS Studio and send that encoder’s continuous output to YouTube. In OBS, use a VLC Video source, add the walkthrough files in order, and enable Loop Playlist. YouTube receives one live broadcast; it does not play a YouTube playlist URL as a live stream.
What you need before you start
- Walkthrough video files that you own or are authorized to stream, with working audio and the intended order decided.
- A computer running OBS Studio. For OBS’s VLC Video source, VLC must also be installed.
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream, plus access to YouTube Studio.
- A stable connection and enough time to test the complete rotation before viewers arrive.
This is a local-computer broadcast: OBS plays the files and sends the encoded stream to YouTube, so the computer and OBS must remain running and correctly configured for the broadcast. YouTube supports streaming through software encoders and hardware encoders; for an existing set of files and a computer, OBS is the straightforward starting point. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the encoder workflow, while the OBS media sources documentation describes the playlist source.
Prepare and order the walkthrough videos
Check every file
Play each video locally from beginning to end. Check that the picture is correct, audio is audible at a consistent level, and no unwanted desktop notifications or private information appear. If you want a title card or transition between homes, include it in the files or plan a separate OBS scene; a playlist setting alone does not create editorial transitions.
Choose a predictable sequence
Write down the order viewers should see the homes or developments. Use clear filenames if that helps you select the right files, and keep a separate copy of the planned sequence. Decide whether the stream should repeat in the same order; for a fixed rotation, leave shuffle off.

Build a looping playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS says VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear. If the source is missing, install VLC and reopen OBS before continuing. The relevant OBS documentation is Media Sources.
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that will carry the walkthrough rotation. Add a source and select VLC Video.
- Add the files. In the VLC Video source’s playlist controls, add the walkthrough files and arrange them in the intended order. Confirm each entry points to the correct local file.
- Set rotation behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a predictable sequence and enable Loop Playlist so OBS starts the list again after the last item. OBS describes VLC Video as allowing a playlist of items, similar to an image slideshow.
- Check playback in the OBS preview. Start or preview the source and verify the opening video, audio, and framing. Observe the end of one file and the transition to the next; then confirm the final item returns to the first as expected.
OBS’s settings can arrange and repeat a playlist, but they do not validate your particular media files. If a file fails to play or the rotation stalls, test that file locally and confirm its path and format before going live.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Confirm channel eligibility early. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; it also lists a minimum age to live stream. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup page, so complete this step well before the planned broadcast. Requirements and interface labels can change; check the current YouTube Studio and Help pages. See YouTube’s live-streaming readiness guidance and encoder setup instructions.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a new stream or schedule one. Scheduling can provide an upcoming watch page, a shareable URL, and reminder options. Use a title and description that make clear viewers are watching prerecorded walkthroughs, and identify homes or developments accurately.
- Copy the stream URL and key into OBS. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder. Enter them in OBS’s streaming settings as directed by YouTube’s current setup flow. The key is a credential: keep it private, do not show it in a public screen capture or overlay, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed. See YouTube stream settings.
- Send the signal and preview it. Start streaming from OBS, then confirm that the incoming picture appears in Live Control Room and that YouTube identifies the intended event. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, previewing, and testing. Verify the public or scheduled watch page on both desktop and mobile before relying on it. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance and readiness guidance.
- Go live and monitor. Once the preview and event are correct, start the broadcast in YouTube Studio if the workflow requires it. Monitor picture, sound, playback, and file changes. When finished, end the stream in YouTube Studio and stop the OBS encoder; consult the current Studio interface for stream management and archiving behavior.
Decide whether to run it locally or in the cloud
| Approach | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS with VLC Video source | You have the tour files and a computer available to operate the broadcast. | The computer and software must remain available and correctly configured throughout the stream. |
| Hardware encoder | Your production already uses dedicated broadcast hardware or needs a hardware-based workflow. | YouTube supports hardware encoders, but buying one is not necessary just to rotate prerecorded files if an existing software setup meets the need. |
| StreamNeo cloud playout | You want uploaded videos to loop as a YouTube stream without leaving a local computer running. | StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos, not camera-based live capture. Its feature and plan details are described at StreamNeo. |
For new-home walkthroughs, use the local OBS method when you can supervise the computer and want direct control of the broadcast. If the stream needs to continue while no computer is running at home, StreamNeo is the cloud option to consider first: it keeps an uploaded-video stream running from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free.

Clear rights before broadcasting
Only stream footage and other material you have permission to use. That includes not only the walkthrough video but also music, photographs, graphics, and other third-party elements. YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content; if it identifies such content, it may show a warning or placeholder and can interrupt or terminate a broadcast if the content remains. YouTube also notes that licensed third-party material can still trigger interruption unless the rights owner allowlists the channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and secure any permissions relevant to the property, occupants, sales materials, and music in your own circumstances.

Troubleshoot common playlist and live-stream problems
VLC Video is not available as an OBS source
OBS requires VLC for this source. Install VLC, close and reopen OBS, then add the source again. If the source still does not appear, check OBS’s media source documentation for current requirements.
A video does not play or the playlist stops
Play the file outside OBS, verify its location, and remove or replace files that cannot be opened. Confirm that every playlist entry points to the correct file. Check that Loop Playlist is enabled if playback should continue after the last entry.

The videos play in an unexpected order
Check the playlist’s displayed order and make sure Shuffle Playlist is off for a fixed sequence. Re-test the transition between files before starting the public stream.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview
Confirm OBS is sending to the intended YouTube event and that the stream URL and key were copied correctly into OBS. A stream key is event/account access information, so do not paste it into public chat or expose it in a scene. Check YouTube Studio’s current encoder status and settings guidance at YouTube stream settings.
