A PC and monitor left on to run a YouTube stream use electricity, so they can increase your household bill. The amount depends on the setup’s actual average power draw and your local tariff; there is no single reliable rupee estimate for every rented flat in India.
How to estimate the extra electricity use
Measure the complete setup at the wall while it is doing the job you care about. Include the monitor if it will stay on. A PC’s power-supply rating is not its typical consumption, and a single instantaneous reading may not reflect changing workloads.
- Measure representative modes. Use a suitable plug-in electricity usage meter to record the PC and monitor during YouTube playback, ordinary idle time, and sleep if those modes occur during the day. An accumulated energy reading over a representative period is more useful than one momentary watt reading. ENERGY STAR’s computer test material describes measurement from an AC source and distinguishes operating modes: ENERGY STAR computer criteria.
- Convert the result to units. One billing unit commonly corresponds to one kilowatt-hour (kWh). If you have average watts, calculate: monthly energy (kWh) = average watts × hours per day × days ÷ 1,000. For continuous use over a 30-day month, that is average watts × 0.72. This is a formula, not an assumed wattage for a streaming PC. If your meter gives accumulated kWh, use the measured period and scale it cautiously to the billing month.
- Apply your own tariff. Check your electricity bill for the utility or DISCOM, domestic category, billing period, energy-charge slabs, subsidy, and other adjustments. State and union-territory regulators set retail tariffs, and governments may provide subsidies; a rate quoted for another location may not apply to your flat. Your bill increase may not equal the added kWh multiplied by one simple rate. Telescopic slabs, fixed charges, electricity duty, subsidies, and other adjustments can affect the final amount. For example, the Chhattisgarh State Electricity Regulatory Commission’s FY 2026–27 domestic schedule specifies telescopic energy charges and monthly minimum fixed charges; it is an example for that jurisdiction, not a national rate: CSERC.
What determines the bill impact?
- PC workload: video playback, idle, sleep, and off are different operating conditions. Your average draw across the whole day matters more than the label on the power supply.
- Display use: include the monitor if it remains on; its draw and sleep behavior also affect the total. ENERGY STAR recommends monitor sleep settings: ENERGY STAR computer guidance.
- Time in each mode: record how many hours the PC and display spend playing, idle, or sleeping rather than assuming constant active playback.
- Your household tariff: the applicable slab can depend on existing household consumption, location, billing period, and subsidy eligibility.
Ways to reduce consumption without guessing
Set the monitor to sleep or switch it off when a display is not needed. Review your computer’s sleep and power-management settings for periods when the stream does not need the PC. ENERGY STAR’s current criteria address idle, sleep, and off modes, and its monitor guidance recommends sleep settings. If the computer must remain awake for the stream, measure its playback and idle draw so you can estimate the cost using your own bill.
