Best Format and Codec for Videos in a YouTube Live Playlist

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no special codec for a “YouTube Live playlist.” If you mean uploaded videos collected in a YouTube playlist, use MP4 with H.264 video and an accepted audio codec such as AAC-LC. If you mean a live stream or its replay, choose settings for the stream’s ingest protocol: YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video with AAC or MP3 audio, while HLS has separate segment requirements.

First, identify what “YouTube Live playlist” means

A YouTube watch playlist is a collection of uploaded videos; it does not define a separate video format or codec. Each file follows YouTube’s upload recommendations. A live stream is different: the encoder sends a real-time signal to YouTube using an ingest protocol, and the protocol determines the relevant settings. YouTube then transcodes live input into multiple playback formats, so the codec you send is not necessarily the codec every viewer receives. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations and live encoder settings address these separate cases.

For uploaded videos in a watch playlist

Use an MP4 container with H.264 video as the straightforward choice. YouTube’s upload guidance also accepts AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. These are upload-file recommendations, not special playlist requirements. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings also advise progressive video, keeping the original frame rate, and placing the MP4 moov atom at the beginning of the file for faster playback startup.

  • Container: MP4.
  • Video: H.264; use progressive scan and retain the source frame rate.
  • Audio: AAC-LC is a practical default; Opus and Eclipsa Audio are also listed.
  • File layout: Put the moov atom at the front of the MP4.

For a live stream or its replay: choose ingest settings

For RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 frames per second, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS when encrypted transport is desired. These are encoder-to-YouTube settings; they do not prescribe a single playback codec for viewers. See the current live encoder settings and bitrate table before configuring an encoder, since recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes

Choose bitrate against the resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to send, then make sure your sustained upload capacity can carry the total stream bitrate. For example, YouTube’s current guidance lists 10 Mbps at 1080p/30 for AV1 or HEVC and 14 Mbps at 1080p/30 for H.264. Those figures are settings guidance on the live table, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable. YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth room; test the outgoing stream and avoid using all available upload capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

  • Rate control: CBR for RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Frame rate: Up to 60 fps; match the content and encoder configuration.
  • Keyframes: Two-second interval recommended; no more than four seconds.
  • Stereo audio: 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps are the listed advanced recommendations.
  • 5.1 audio: 48 kHz and 384 kbps are listed; for RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 is supported only with AAC.

HDR

For HDR, YouTube identifies H.265/HEVC as the HDR codec. Do not assume that an SDR encoder profile or color setup is suitable for HDR; check YouTube’s current HDR guidance and your encoder documentation for the complete color configuration.

If you use HLS ingestion

HLS has packaging requirements beyond choosing a codec. YouTube requires transport-stream (TS) segments one to four seconds long and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. It lists H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it delivers video in segments. Follow the current YouTube HLS setup requirements when configuring the packager.

How to choose

For a continuous playlist stream without a computer running

If your goal is to play uploaded videos continuously as a YouTube live stream, an encoder must keep sending the live signal. You can run that setup yourself with an encoder and a reliable connection, or use a cloud service designed to loop uploaded videos. StreamNeo is one such option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the uploaded material to YouTube, not from a camera.
