Customize a YouTube live stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room: choose or create the stream, edit its details, set the controls available for your broadcast type, and check the preview before you go live. Encoder, webcam, mobile, and console streams do not expose identical settings, so start by choosing the workflow that fits your setup.
Before you customize a stream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days to stream. Streamers must be at least 16 years old. YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and console workflows; available controls depend on the method. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and methods.
Open the Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- In the Live Control Room, select an existing scheduled stream in Manage, or create a new stream.
- Open the stream’s details and settings. For scheduled streams, Manage is the main place to select and edit the event. Some settings guidance applies to encoder or mobile streams and excludes webcam streams. Follow the controls shown for your selected method. Manage live stream settings.
Edit the details viewers see
Set an accurate title and description, then choose the available audience-facing options for the stream, such as privacy, category or type, schedule, and comments or ratings. Privacy choices include public, private, and unlisted. Scheduling can make a stream appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds and lets viewers choose “Notify me.”
Tags are not a substitute for clear metadata: YouTube says they play a minimal role in discovery except where a topic or name is commonly misspelled. Put the effort into a precise title and description that match the broadcast. YouTube’s stream settings guidance.

Choose settings for your broadcast method
Encoder
Encoder streams provide controls such as stream key, stream URL, latency, DVR, and auto-start or auto-stop. A stream key is a credential for your encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it private; if it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room, after which you must update the encoder with the new key. Manage live stream settings.
Latency is a trade-off: lower latency can help you interact with viewers sooner, while normal latency prioritizes less buffering. Webcam and mobile users cannot manually select latency. YouTube’s latency guidance.

Webcam
A webcam broadcast is a simpler direct-from-computer-camera workflow. YouTube documents screen sharing when a webcam and microphone are connected, but some encoder-specific options are not available in the webcam workflow. Do not look for encoder controls such as a configurable stream key or latency setting in a workflow that does not expose them. Get started with live streaming.
Mobile and console
Mobile is suited to a quick update or vlog from a phone; latency is fixed to interactive behavior rather than manually selected. Console streaming is another supported method, but its controls differ from the Live Control Room’s encoder settings. Check the options shown for the chosen workflow rather than assuming every stream has the same controls. YouTube’s live-streaming methods.

Plan horizontal and vertical viewing before you start
YouTube documents horizontal and vertical output in supported Live Control Room workflows. For the vertical canvas, the available layout choices include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. Decide on the vertical treatment before going live: YouTube says the vertical version cannot be added after a stream starts. Live Control Room setup.
Use a crop when the important action stays near the center; fit to phone width when preserving the full image matters more than filling the screen; and a stacked arrangement when the selected workflow offers it and the composition suits a phone display. Preview the framing so important gameplay information, overlays, or faces are not cut off.

Set up chat and check the preview
Live chat can be embedded on a website using an iframe, but the embed domain must match the website domain. Embedded chat is not available on mobile web. Use live chat during your live stream or Premiere.
Before starting, inspect the Live Control Room preview. Check that the intended video or camera feed is present, framing is correct, audio is coming through, and the selected stream details and layout are right. YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend checking the preview before clicking Start Streaming. YouTube live-stream tips.
Common customization problems
- A setting is missing: Controls vary by broadcast method. Confirm whether you selected encoder, webcam, mobile, or console, then check the guidance for that workflow.
- The encoder will not connect after a key change: Update the encoder with the current stream key and URL. If the old key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder.
- Viewers see buffering or a delay: Latency settings trade interaction speed against buffering. If you use an encoder, review the available latency options; webcam and mobile do not allow manual latency selection.
- The vertical version is absent: Set up the vertical output before starting; YouTube says it cannot be added after the stream begins.
- A scheduled trailer or redirect option is unavailable: Check the eligibility rules, including subscriber threshold and Community Guideline strike status; for a redirect to another channel, obtain its permission.
- Tags are not improving discovery: YouTube says tags usually have minimal impact beyond commonly misspelled terms. Refine the title and description instead.
- Embedded chat does not appear: Check that the embed domain matches the website domain and remember that embedded chat is unavailable on mobile web.
