YouTube says it balances quiet and loud playback to reduce variations, and is on by default when supported. It is not available for every video, and YouTube says it is off for YouTube Music and official music videos.
Turn on Stable volume
- Start a video in the playlist.
- Open the video player’s Settings menu.
- Select Stable volume if it appears.
The setting works through YouTube playback; its availability can vary by video, device and app version. YouTube’s help page gives instructions for computers and TVs, but does not establish that the control appears in every playback environment. YouTube Help: Stable volume.
Try Voice boost if speech is hard to hear
If voices are masked by background sound, look for Voice boost in the player’s audio settings. YouTube describes it as reducing background sounds and highlighting vocals. It is a dialogue aid, not a guarantee that every item in a playlist will have the same loudness. Enabling Voice boost automatically turns Stable volume off, so the two controls are not active together. Availability can vary.
Why playlist videos sound different
Each video can have a different perceived loudness. Loudness normalization measures perceived program loudness and adjusts gain toward a target. That differs from peak normalization, which is based on signal peaks rather than how loud varied audio sounds to a listener.

The Audio Engineering Society illustrates the arithmetic with content measured at -27 LUFS and a +3 LU gain adjustment to reach an example target of -24 LUFS. Those figures explain normalization; they are not a YouTube setting or a stated YouTube target. Audio Engineering Society: Loudness.
If you control the source videos
Creators who own or can edit the source files can normalize their audio before publishing, which can make a playlist they control more consistent. Audacity’s Loudness Normalization effect measures how loud a selection sounds and applies gain toward a target you choose. It changes files or project audio you can edit; it cannot adjust unrelated videos already hosted by other channels. Audacity Manual: Loudness Normalization.

When the control is missing
- Confirm that the player’s Settings menu is open while a video is playing; the exact controls depend on playback environment.
- If Stable volume is absent, YouTube says it is not available for all videos and is off for YouTube Music and official music videos. The device, app version and specific video affect what appears.
- If Voice boost is absent, its availability may also vary. There is no guaranteed viewer-side control that can normalize every video in a playlist.
