Choose OBS if you want direct control over a broadcast and can keep a computer and internet connection running; choose cloud playout if you want uploaded video to air on a schedule or loop without leaving a computer on. A scheduled one-off event and a continuous 24/7 channel are different requirements: confirm that a service explicitly supports continuous looping before choosing it for an always-on channel.
Decide what kind of broadcast you need
One scheduled pre-recorded event
For a single video that should appear live at a chosen time, either an encoder workflow or a hosted service may fit. With OBS, you operate playback and the stream session yourself. Hosted options document scheduled pre-recorded events, but their video-duration limits, scheduling controls, and plan availability vary. YouTube says scheduled streams can appear to subscribers as upcoming, where viewers may choose “Notify me.” YouTube’s live-stream settings help explains scheduling and encoder setup.
A continuous channel or playlist
For 24/7 playback, the key question is whether the service explicitly supports continuous looping—not merely whether it can schedule a video once. Castr describes a continuous playlist loop and says the feature is available on Premium and higher; check its current plan limits before subscribing. StreamNeo is another option for uploaded-video looping on YouTube. StreamYard and Restream document scheduled pre-recorded events, but the cited documentation does not establish them as continuous 24/7 playlist services.
OBS versus cloud playout
| Decision point | OBS / local encoder | Cloud service |
|---|---|---|
| Where the stream runs | Your computer runs the encoder and plays the prepared source. It and its internet connection need to remain available during transmission. | The provider plays uploaded video from its cloud workflow; for StreamNeo, your computer does not need to stay on during the broadcast. |
| Control | Direct local control over scenes and sources. You operate playback and the stream session. | Managed scheduling or playout; available controls and limits depend on the service and plan. |
| One-time event | Possible as an encoder stream, with you managing the playback and session. | Castr, StreamYard, and Restream each document scheduled pre-recorded workflows, subject to their own conditions. |
| 24/7 playlist | The playback and encoder workflow must keep running unless you separately automate it. | Use a provider that specifically documents continuous looping. Castr describes it on Premium and higher; StreamNeo includes 24/7 looping and playlists. |
| Cost considerations | OBS is not a subscription service in this comparison, but electricity, equipment, and connectivity are practical ongoing costs. | Expect plan fees and vendor limits. Compare the exact duration, storage, schedule quantity, destination, and loop support you need. |

Castr: scheduled premieres and looping
Castr says its workflow lets you upload MP4s, schedule a premiere, or loop a playlist. Its product page lists YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, website-player, and custom RTMP/SRT destinations; storage, duration, playlist, and concurrent-stream limits vary by tier. It describes infinite looping as available on Premium and higher. These are Castr’s stated features, not independent performance findings. Check Castr’s pre-recorded streaming page for current conditions.
StreamYard: plan-dependent scheduled events
StreamYard’s help page lists maximum pre-recorded video durations of two hours on Core, four hours on Advanced, and eight hours on Team and Business. It states a scheduling horizon of up to 365 days and different concurrent-schedule limits by plan. For YouTube, the share link appears at the announcement time, or when the stream goes live if no announcement is scheduled. These are vendor-published limits, so confirm the current interface and plan terms. StreamYard’s help article has the workflow details.

Restream: a scheduled recorded event
Restream’s help article describes scheduling a recorded video to air as a live event and says it automatically airs at the selected time. It documents support when streaming through Restream Studio or encoders. The cited article does not establish which plans include the workflow or whether it supports continuous 24/7 looping, so verify both before relying on it for an always-on channel. See Restream’s event instructions.
How to choose
- Pick OBS when local scene control matters and you can keep the computer and connection available for the entire broadcast.
- Pick cloud scheduling when you want an uploaded recording to air at a selected time without operating a local encoder during playback.
- For a 24/7 channel, verify explicit continuous playlist looping, not just scheduled-event support. Check storage, video-duration limits, concurrent streams, destination support, recovery behavior, and plan terms.
- Compare total cost: an OBS setup avoids a streaming-service subscription but still uses power, equipment, and connectivity. A cloud service charges for its plan and imposes its own limits.
YouTube setup and viewer notifications
YouTube provides the destination-side schedule and encoder controls. For an encoder workflow, create or manage the live stream in YouTube Studio and use the stream URL and stream key shown in its settings to connect the encoder. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send video to your channel. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says it may appear to subscribers as upcoming, and viewers can select “Notify me.” See YouTube’s instructions for managing live-stream settings for the current controls.

Copyright, reused content, and monetization
Automating playback does not grant rights to the video or its music. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that they have the necessary rights for the content’s use on Google services, including music licensing rights. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and secure the rights needed for your use before broadcasting.
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams as well as other videos. In a July 15, 2025 policy update, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible for monetization; reused-content review is a separate policy from copyright permission. Review YouTube’s monetization policies before building a channel around repeated recordings. Eligible monetized live streams may show ads, but ad slots are not guaranteed to serve, so a continuous loop does not guarantee ad revenue. YouTube’s live monetization guidance explains the ad qualification.
