That keeps the broadcast running, but a fade only softens the visible cut—it does not guarantee gapless video or audio. For 4K at 60 fps, YouTube lists a recommended H.264 bitrate of 35 Mbps; rehearse the exact playlist and inspect the YouTube preview before relying on it live.
How to switch videos without ending your YouTube Live stream
YouTube Live receives a feed from an encoder configured with a server URL and stream key. The practical way to play prerecorded videos in sequence is to keep that encoder output active while changing the media it sends. Prepare the sources and transitions in advance; do not end and restart the broadcast at every playlist boundary. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the connection and preview workflow, but does not prescribe an OBS playlist-switch recipe or guarantee gapless handoffs.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide and live stream settings guidance describe entering the server URL and stream key in an encoder, starting the encoder, checking the preview, and then going live. Treat the stream key as a password: keep it private and out of screenshots.
Prepare the playlist and transitions in your encoder
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream, then copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder’s streaming settings.
- Prepare each video source or scene. In OBS or another encoder, add the prerecorded files as media sources or organize them into scenes. Match the canvas and output settings across scenes. Check each file’s duration, resolution, frame rate, audio track, and playback behavior before the event.
- Set the handoff you want. A short scene fade can make a hard visual cut less abrupt. It cannot prevent a source from taking time to initialize, fix a mismatched frame rate, or fill an audio gap. For continuous sound, check the outgoing and incoming audio at every boundary; test the actual files together.
- Keep the encoder’s YouTube output active. Change the active media source or scene without stopping the stream output. This is the operational approach for keeping one broadcast open; it is not a guarantee that every viewer’s playback will be interruption-free.
- Rehearse the full sequence. Run the playlist as it will be used, preferably in an unlisted or private rehearsal, and check both picture and sound in YouTube’s preview. Keep a fallback slate or scene ready and verify the next file can start before the current one ends.
Set up 4K at 60 fps
Use 4K/2160p at 60 fps only if the encoder and sustained upload connection can support it. For that mode, YouTube’s current encoder settings table lists a recommended H.264 bitrate of 35 Mbps. Its table gives AV1/H.265 a range of 10–40 Mbps for 2160p60. Choose the values for the codec you are actually sending, then verify stream health under load; a listed video bitrate is not proof that a particular internet connection will remain stable.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s encoder settings table also says 4K does not offer the low-latency option and is optimized for normal latency. Expect viewer delay accordingly, rather than selecting a low-latency mode that is unavailable for 4K.
RTMP/RTMPS or HLS?
Use a protocol supported by your encoder and appropriate for your workflow. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency because it sends video segments instead of a continuous feed like RTMP. For HLS, YouTube requires a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments. Check your encoder’s HLS configuration against YouTube’s HLS setup guidance. For a conventional prerecorded playlist where lower delay matters, consider whether your encoder’s continuous-feed option better fits the production.

HDR is optional
HDR is a separate workflow, not a requirement for 4K or playlist switching. YouTube’s HDR documentation says HDR streaming currently uses H.265/HEVC and documents OBS HDR setup from version 30.1 with an HDR source and specific encoder and color settings. Follow YouTube’s HDR instructions only if the source and intended output are HDR.
Preflight the stream before the event
- Configure the stream at least 2 hours before the event and start the encoder at least 15 minutes before it, as YouTube recommends.
- Confirm the YouTube preview shows the expected image and audio before going live.
- Play through the sequence and listen closely to the file boundaries, not just the middle of each clip.
- Test encoder failover and check that any local archive is usable.
- Monitor audio and video continuously during the broadcast; keep the fallback scene available.
- Confirm that every video and audio item is cleared for livestreaming. YouTube’s live-stream guidance warns creators to ensure even trailers do not infringe rights; the same rights check applies to playlist items.
These timing and monitoring steps come from YouTube’s live streaming tips.

Why a black screen or audio gap appears between videos
Black screen or delayed picture
- The next source has not started. A media source may need time to initialize. Test the exact boundary, prepare the next source in advance where your encoder workflow allows it, and keep a fallback scene ready.
- The source or scene switch is misconfigured. Confirm the intended source is active and that scenes share compatible canvas and output settings. Rehearse the transition in the encoder and YouTube preview.
- The encoder or connection is struggling at 4K60. Check encoder load and stream health, and confirm the connection can sustain the selected codec and bitrate. Do not treat YouTube’s recommended video bitrate as the total upload capacity needed for a stable feed.
Silence, a click, or a sudden audio change
- The files’ audio does not meet at the boundary. Inspect the end of one file and the start of the next. A video fade does not repair silence, a click, or a level mismatch.
- Audio tracks or formats differ. Check that each source has the expected audio track and that the encoder handles the files consistently. Test playback in the actual playlist, not only as separate clips.
- The transition changes video but not audio smoothly. Test the audio handoff separately and adjust the source workflow if the sound drops or overlaps.
Choose an encoder that fits the production
A software encoder on a capable computer may be suitable if it can sustain the chosen 4K60 settings while playing the media. A dedicated hardware encoder is an option for demanding or dedicated productions, but it is not required simply to switch playlist videos. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events; it does not establish that every prerecorded playlist needs one. Compare supported codecs, sustained 4K60 capability, media-source handling, monitoring, and budget before choosing. See YouTube’s encoder recommendations.

When the playlist is finished, end the broadcast in the Live Control Room and stop the encoder as appropriate for your workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after ending, according to its encoder guide.
