Match the output resolution and bitrate to the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity, then test the feed and arrange process recovery and monitoring. A VPS can keep FFmpeg running without a home computer, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted public broadcast: the media, VPS network, YouTube ingest and channel status all matter.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel whose current Live Control Room shows that it can start a live broadcast. Account eligibility and any channel restrictions vary; check your own account rather than assuming activation is immediate.
- A prerecorded video you have the rights to stream, and an Indian VPS that permits continuous video streaming under its current terms.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS, plus SSH or another secure way to manage it.
- A sustained outbound connection with enough headroom for the selected stream bitrate, and a plan for process restarts, logs and health checks.
The VPS provider and plan matter more than a headline port speed. Before buying, confirm the actual India location, sustained outbound throughput, data-transfer or egress charges, streaming terms, firewall behavior and whether the YouTube ingest endpoint is reachable. No provider, plan, price, minimum CPU count or uptime guarantee can be recommended from the information established here.
Choose a YouTube-compatible stream profile
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, progressive scan and square pixels. It supports frame rates up to 60 fps and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For H.264, the guidance lists 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not required VPS port speeds; test the actual server connection and leave headroom for variation and protocol overhead. YouTube’s encoder settings.
The same YouTube page has an apparent inconsistency: its listed H.264 maximum is 10 Mbps while its listed recommendation for 1080p60 is 12 Mbps. Do not treat that combination as settled guidance. For a conservative starting profile, use a documented pairing such as 720p30 at 4 Mbps or 1080p30 at 10 Mbps, then check the current Live Control Room recommendations for your selected configuration.

For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1 audio, it recommends 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Its SDR guidance specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR. Apply the settings relevant to your chosen media and stream profile, rather than treating every listed audio or color setting as universal.
Create a YouTube broadcast and protect its stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or select the broadcast you intend to use. Confirm that your account can go live and check its current stream health messages.
- In the broadcast’s stream settings, obtain the ingest URL and stream key associated with that configuration. Prefer RTMPS when the selected YouTube configuration and installed FFmpeg build support it. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP over an SSL connection; copy the exact current URL shown for your broadcast rather than relying on an old example. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Keep the key private. Do not place it in a public repository, screenshot, shared shell transcript or command that other users can inspect. Store it in a restricted environment file or secret-management mechanism and limit access to the VPS account running FFmpeg. Install FFmpeg and prepare the media
Install FFmpeg using the package manager for your VPS operating system, or use a trusted build appropriate to that system. Builds can differ in supported options and codecs; check the installed version and available encoders before relying on a command. Make sure the input file is readable by the account that will run the stream, and confirm that it has a valid video and audio track for the output you plan to send.

A file needs real-time pacing when sent as a live stream. FFmpeg’s -re option reads the input at its native rate; -stream_loop -1 repeats a file indefinitely. These options suit a file input, not a live capture source that is already arriving in real time. FFmpeg documents a basic RTMP output form as ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream; it is a protocol example, not a complete YouTube command. FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Run a looping FFmpeg stream
The following is an adaptable starting template for a 30-fps H.264 stream at 4 Mbps, within YouTube’s listed 240p–720p/30-fps recommendation. It is not a tested or universal command. The input must be compatible with the chosen output resolution and frame rate; adjust the profile to your media, YouTube’s current guidance and the VPS’s tested upload capacity.

Set YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY securely for the service account before running the command. Shell quoting and whether the key belongs appended to the ingest URL depend on the exact URL YouTube supplies; inspect that configuration and do not expose the resolved destination in logs. Do not assume the template fits a higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate source without changing and testing its encoding settings.
Test the VPS connection and YouTube feed
- From the provisioned VPS, test sustained outbound throughput to an appropriate destination. Check the provider’s transfer allowance and egress billing as well as speed; a brief peak test does not establish that the connection will sustain a stream indefinitely.
- Start FFmpeg while watching its output for input, codec, authentication and connection errors. Confirm that it is sending continuously rather than racing through the file.
- Open the matching broadcast in Live Control Room. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed, inspect stream health and messages, and verify picture, audio, resolution and frame rate before making the stream public or relying on it unattended.
- Leave the test running long enough to expose short-term network or resource problems. YouTube advises testing before a stream and monitoring health and messages; it does not guarantee that a particular VPS will sustain a chosen bitrate. YouTube’s encoder settings and monitoring guidance.
Keep FFmpeg running and recover from failures
An SSH terminal is not a production supervisor: disconnects, reboots, process crashes, provider maintenance, invalid input or a dropped ingest can stop the broadcast. Run FFmpeg under a service manager or supervisor configured for the VPS operating system. Configure it to restart the process after an unexpected exit, retain logs with restricted permissions, and make sure secrets are supplied without being printed. Verify the restart behavior deliberately in a test window rather than assuming it works.

A process restart and a restored public broadcast are not the same thing. A restart can recover from an FFmpeg exit, but it cannot fix a sustained network outage, invalid media, YouTube account restrictions or a rejected stream key. Arrange a periodic check or alert for the process and the public broadcast or ingest health. YouTube recommends monitoring health and messages; the cited guidance does not promise FFmpeg recovery from every failure or a VPS uptime level.

Common problems and fixes
