If Streamlabs Desktop is sending your video feed to YouTube, keep the app open and streaming for the duration of the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder workflow ends when the encoder stops sending content. You can close the separate YouTube Live Control Panel window without closing Streamlabs Desktop.
Why Streamlabs Desktop needs to stay open
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts and sends a live feed to YouTube. Streamlabs Desktop is the local software encoder in this setup: it sends the video and audio feed, so it must remain active while the broadcast depends on it. YouTube’s instructions put it plainly: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Closing the encoder is not the same as closing a browser or dashboard window. YouTube’s cloud does not, in the documented encoder workflow, keep a feed going after the local app that sends it has exited.
Streamlabs Desktop versus the YouTube Live Control Panel
The Live Control Panel is a separate, compact YouTube dashboard. You can close that window while Streamlabs Desktop continues to send the stream. Closing Streamlabs Desktop itself stops the active local encoder from sending its feed; do not close it until the YouTube event has ended.

What to do before, during, and after the stream
- Start the encoder: In Streamlabs Desktop, configure the YouTube stream URL and stream key, then start streaming from the app. YouTube uses the stream key to let the encoder send a feed that YouTube can accept. See YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
- Keep Streamlabs Desktop running: Leave the app open and sending content for the whole broadcast. You may close the separate Live Control Panel window if you do not need it.
- Monitor the broadcast: Check audio and video quality while live. YouTube recommends monitoring both throughout the event. YouTube live streaming tips for computer.
- End the event first: When the broadcast is over, end the stream on YouTube as applicable and stop sending from Streamlabs Desktop. YouTube’s guidance is: “After your event has stopped on YouTube, stop the encoder.” YouTube live streaming tips for computer.
Do auto-start and auto-stop mean Streamlabs can close?
No. YouTube stream settings may include auto-start and auto-stop, which let you start or stop a broadcast from the encoder. Those settings do not mean a local encoder keeps running after its application exits. Keep Streamlabs Desktop active while it is the source sending your feed.
Keep a separate recording if the broadcast matters
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local archive as a backup, and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Archiving is separate from keeping the encoder running: a saved replay is not a substitute for an active live feed. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
