You can avoid an extra quality-degrading encode when your AVI’s video and audio codecs are compatible with the format YouTube will ingest: inspect the streams, try a stream-copy remux, and test it before broadcasting. But “without quality loss” has a limit—YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for viewers, so bit-for-bit preservation end to end is not guaranteed.
What “without quality loss” can—and cannot—mean
AVI is a container, not a video or audio codec. Two AVI files may contain different streams, so the filename alone cannot tell you whether the contents can be sent through unchanged. FFmpeg’s stream copy copies packets without decoding or encoding; that avoids quality loss during that step when the destination can carry the source streams. FFmpeg documentation
If the codecs are incompatible with the output container or YouTube ingest, or you need to resize, deinterlace, add overlays, change frame rate, or process audio, the media must be decoded and encoded. That can reduce quality, particularly with lossy codecs. YouTube also transcodes the incoming live stream into viewer formats, so you can avoid an unnecessary local generation but cannot guarantee that viewers receive the original bits. Inspect the AVI before choosing a conversion
Check the streams and picture characteristics
Run ffprobe input.avi and record the video codec, audio codec, frame size, frame rate, pixel format, and whether the video is interlaced. Replace input.avi with your file’s path. The purpose is to identify the actual streams before choosing an output: AVI by itself does not establish compatibility.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- If the codecs are supported by the intended output container and ingest, test stream copy.
- If a codec is incompatible, or you need image or audio processing, plan for a single controlled transcode rather than repeated lossy conversions.
- Keep the original frame size and frame rate where possible; do not upscale or alter cadence without a reason.
Try a stream-copy remux first
If inspection indicates that the streams can be carried in MP4, try this illustrative command:
ffmpeg -i input.avi -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy output.mp4

This maps the first video and first audio stream and copies them without encoding. It is not guaranteed to work for every AVI: success depends on the codecs and MP4 muxer support. Check that the output plays correctly, including its audio and representative motion, before using it in a long broadcast. If the command fails, do not assume changing the extension is a conversion; determine which stream is incompatible and choose an appropriate transcode.
Transcode only when the stream copy is unsuitable
For a common H.264/AAC RTMP(S) ingest, YouTube’s published guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), progressive square-pixel video, and a bitrate suited to resolution and frame rate. Use the source frame size and rate when they are suitable. Any necessary decode-and-encode step is not lossless in the strict sense; avoid encoding the same footage repeatedly.

As checked on October 3, 2026, YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. For H.264, its listed recommended video bitrates include 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. These are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of viewer-side quality. Prefer RTMPS for encrypted transport, and verify the current settings on YouTube’s encoder settings page before configuring a stream, since guidance can change.
Loop a compatible file into a YouTube live ingest
Once you have a tested file with compatible streams, FFmpeg can read it at native frame rate and loop it indefinitely. The following is an illustrative pattern, not a universal command:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping and -re as reading a file at its native frame rate. This example copies both streams into an FLV output, so use it only if the codecs are compatible with the muxer and your ingest configuration. If they are not, specify suitable video and audio encoders and configure them to meet YouTube’s current requirements.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the ingest endpoint and stream key for the broadcast. Substitute those actual values for
YOUR_INGEST_URLandYOUR_STREAM_KEY; the example placeholders are not real credentials or an endpoint. - Run the command with your tested input file. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send to your stream.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and the actual broadcast before leaving it unattended. Confirm picture, sound, and loop behavior with representative motion and audio.
A loop command is not an uptime or recovery system. It does not by itself keep a computer powered, sustain an upload connection, restart after a failure, or recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test and troubleshoot before leaving a stream running
YouTube recommends testing before a stream. Its stream-health diagnostics can surface issues such as low bitrate, missing audio, unsupported codecs, and keyframe problems. Monitor the actual broadcast rather than relying only on a successful local command. YouTube Live API stream configuration and health
- Remux reports an unsupported codec or fails: the destination container may not support one of the source streams. Recheck the codecs with
ffprobe; transcode only the incompatible workflow rather than treating the AVI extension as evidence of compatibility. - YouTube reports unsupported video or audio: verify the actual output codecs against YouTube’s current ingest guidance. Use a supported codec and encode if stream copy cannot meet it.
- Health reports low bitrate: compare the configured bitrate with the resolution and frame-rate guidance for the chosen codec. Also confirm that the machine and upload connection can sustain the outgoing stream.
- Keyframe warning: configure the encoder for the recommended two-second interval and do not exceed four seconds, in line with YouTube’s current guidance.
- Picture works but audio is missing: confirm the input has an audio stream, that the command maps it, and that the output uses an accepted audio codec.
- The stream stops after a power, process, or network interruption: looping the file does not provide automatic restart or network failover. You need an operating setup and recovery process that address those failure points, or a cloud service that handles continuous playback and recovery.
Keep a continuous YouTube stream compliant
Technical compatibility does not establish that you have the right to broadcast the contents. Before looping a recording, check that you have the necessary rights to its video, music, and other included material, and review YouTube’s applicable policies. Repeating a file indefinitely does not change its rights status or make it original. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight, alongside YouTube’s own rules.
