For a simple, unchanging video loop, FFmpeg avoids dependence on an interactive desktop; use OBS when you need scenes, overlays, or GUI controls, but test it on your exact VPS after disconnecting Remote Desktop and restarting Windows.
Choose the right way to encode the stream
The main choice is between a command-line encoder for a straightforward loop and a desktop application for more elaborate composition. Neither choice removes the need to monitor the stream and recover from failures.

When FFmpeg makes sense
For a static ambient feed, FFmpeg can read a video or playlist and publish it to an ingest endpoint without requiring a scene-composition desktop. A third-party 2026 VPS guide demonstrates an indefinitely repeated input using FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option. Its example is not a complete Windows service recipe, so treat it as an illustration of looping media rather than copy-paste instructions for unattended Windows recovery. Space-Node’s VPS guide
When OBS is worth testing
OBS offers the visual composition controls that a simple loop may not need. In a 2020 OBS forum answer, administrator and developer R1CH advised that OBS was not designed for headless use and suggested FFmpeg or VLC when composition features are unnecessary. That is historical community guidance, not a guarantee about every current GPU-enabled VPS. Reports from Windows VPS users also describe graphics or virtual-display problems after disconnecting Remote Desktop. Test the actual provider, virtual graphics setup, Windows version, and session behavior before depending on OBS unattended. Prepare the video and YouTube ingest settings
Use YouTube Live Control Room to create or select the stream and retrieve its current stream URL and key. Set the encoder to a protocol and codec YouTube supports. YouTube recommends RTMPS where available, lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options and AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Its guidance supports up to 60 fps and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Use a bitrate appropriate to resolution and frame rate
YouTube’s current recommended H.264 ingest bitrates include 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or upload reliably at those settings. Leave network headroom and test sustained performance on your chosen instance; software-encoding demands vary with the footage and settings.

Make mixed clips behave consistently
If a playlist combines files with different dimensions, frame rates, or audio characteristics, normalize them where needed so that transitions do not introduce distracting visual or audio changes. A third-party guide demonstrates normalization and FFmpeg playlists, but its sample values are examples, not YouTube requirements. Check the finished loop locally before publishing it.
Connect the encoder without exposing your stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and copy its current stream URL and stream key.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the URL and key, select a supported video and audio codec, use CBR, set the keyframe interval to about two seconds (never more than four seconds), and choose bitrate, resolution, and frame rate appropriate to your content and upload capacity.
- Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends the encrypted variant where available.
- Keep the key private. YouTube treats a stream key like a password. Do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs. If it is compromised, reset it in the live settings. YouTube: Manage live stream settings
- Test before relying on the broadcast. Confirm that YouTube receives the signal and inspect stream-health messages before leaving the VPS unattended.
Keep the broadcast running through failures and reboots
A 24/7 stream needs more than a looping input: the encoder must start again after a crash or operating-system restart, and you need a way to check process status and logs. The automatic-restart example in the 2026 VPS guide uses Linux systemd; it does not establish a native Windows service configuration. Do not use its systemd unit file as a Windows procedure. The appropriate Windows startup and supervision setup depends on the VPS image, account and session model, encoder, and process supervisor.

Before treating the setup as unattended, verify on the target VPS that the encoder starts after reboot, continues after an RDP disconnect, and reconnects or can be restarted if the publishing process fails. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages as well as the local process: an encoder that appears to be running does not prove viewers are receiving healthy video. Plan for the resource and recording limits
Test the VPS instead of guessing from a sizing chart
YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate is not a VPS specification. Check sustained encoding performance and outbound upload on the instance you plan to use, then adjust settings if it cannot maintain the stream. A VPS guide’s instance-size examples are illustrative, not a vendor-neutral Windows minimum.

Do not rely on YouTube for a complete 24/7 archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours may be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous broadcast therefore should not depend on the YouTube replay as its sole recording. - The stream stops when you disconnect RDP: OBS or its graphics session may depend on the interactive desktop. Reproduce the disconnect on the exact VPS; verify its virtual display and session behavior, or use a command-line loop if scene composition is unnecessary.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder signal: Check that you copied the current stream URL and key, selected a supported protocol and codec, and have not exposed or reset the key without updating the encoder.
- Dropped frames or unstable playback: Inspect YouTube stream health, test sustained upload, and lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Leave network headroom rather than treating the recommended bitrate as a guaranteed capacity.
- The encoder is running but the channel is offline: Check the remote stream-health status and publishing destination; local process status alone cannot confirm a healthy YouTube ingest.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. Use a separate recording plan if retaining the whole broadcast is important.
- The stream does not recover after a crash or reboot: Check process supervision, startup behavior, and logs on Windows. Linux systemd instructions do not configure a Windows VPS.
