To start a YouTube lofi stream when your computer starts, configure OBS to open with the launch parameter --startstreaming, then set your operating system to launch OBS at login. These are separate steps: the startup setting opens OBS, while the parameter tells OBS to begin streaming. YouTube’s own auto-start setting controls whether an encoder can start a scheduled broadcast; it does not replace OBS’s startup configuration.
The Windows and macOS setup paths are below. OBS documents the launch parameter for Linux too, but the exact login-autostart steps depend on your distribution and desktop environment.
Prepare the YouTube stream and OBS scene first
Do not automate an untested setup. Confirm the correct YouTube channel, broadcast, stream key, scene, and audio before asking OBS to start unattended.
- In OBS, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow its recommendations for your computer and network.
- Create the lofi scene: add the video or image source, configure the audio source, and check that the audio mixer meters move as expected.
- Configure OBS for YouTube using the service/server and stream key for the intended broadcast. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Start a short test stream. Check the picture, audio, and YouTube’s stream-health indicators from the intended viewing setup before relying on automation. OBS recommends testing, and YouTube advises testing with representative audio and video (OBS streaming guide; YouTube streaming tips).
Choose encoder settings that your connection can sustain
Use YouTube’s published recommendations as starting points, not guarantees. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. It recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe frequency, and RTMPS for secure ingestion. The right resolution and bitrate still depend on your upload connection and computer; leave room for network variation rather than setting the stream at the full measured upload speed (YouTube encoder settings).

- Bandwidth: YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. Its Help page does not display a publication year for this recommendation.
- Frame rate and load: A 60-fps stream can demand more than 30 fps. OBS notes that performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity (OBS streaming guide; OBS system requirements).
- Test stability: Watch both OBS and YouTube stream health during a representative test. A setting that works briefly may still fail under changing network conditions.
Set OBS to start streaming when it launches
OBS provides two relevant launch parameters: --startstreaming automatically starts streaming, and --minimize-to-tray starts OBS minimized to the system tray. Add the parameters only after confirming that the OBS profile, scene, YouTube service, and broadcast selection are the ones you want launched (OBS launch parameters).
Windows: add parameters to an OBS shortcut
- Locate the OBS shortcut you want to use and make a copy so you can retain an unmodified shortcut for normal use.
- Right-click the copy and choose Properties.
- In the Shortcut tab, edit the Target field. Leave the existing executable path intact, add a space after its closing quote, and append
--startstreaming. To start minimized as well, append a space and--minimize-to-tray. - Use this shortcut for the operating system’s login startup mechanism. Test by launching it manually first, then verify the login behavior before leaving it unattended.
If you use Task Scheduler or another automated launcher instead of a shortcut, set Start in to the directory containing obs64.exe. OBS specifically notes that automated launches need the working directory set to the folder where that executable is located (OBS launch parameters).

macOS: make an Automator launcher
- Open Automator and create an application workflow.
- Add the Run Shell Script action.
- Enter
open -a "OBS" --args --startstreaming. To start minimized too, add--minimize-to-trayafter--startstreaming. - Save the workflow as an application, then configure that application to launch at login using the startup mechanism for your macOS version.
- Run the saved application and confirm OBS opens and starts the intended stream before relying on it.
OBS documents the Automator launcher method; the exact login-settings screens can vary by macOS version (OBS launch parameters).
Linux: confirm the desktop environment before configuring login
The OBS --startstreaming launch parameter is documented, but a single desktop-autostart recipe is not established for every Linux distribution and desktop environment. Confirm your distribution and desktop environment before choosing a login entry, script, or service. Avoid assuming a system service is equivalent to a graphical login launch.

Understand OBS start, YouTube auto-start, and broadcast scheduling
OBS’s --startstreaming tells OBS to start sending the stream when OBS opens. YouTube’s encoder auto-start and auto-stop options control how a broadcast behaves when an encoder connects or disconnects; they are separate YouTube broadcast settings. Review those controls in the intended broadcast’s stream settings and test them with the exact setup you plan to leave running (YouTube encoder streaming settings).
A scheduled event and a persistent 24/7 broadcast are different operating plans. YouTube recommends giving an encoder 15 minutes before a scheduled event, a guideline whose publication year is not displayed on the Help page. For a persistent stream, verify the broadcast is configured for the behavior you actually want rather than assuming the scheduled-event workflow will create a continuously running broadcast.

Plan for reconnection, outages, and replays
Enable and review OBS’s Automatic Reconnect option in its Advanced settings. Reconnection can help OBS recover after a dropped connection, but it cannot prevent power loss, computer failure, operating-system updates, or a YouTube-side problem. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream and recommends upload bandwidth above the stream’s total bitrate (YouTube streaming tips; YouTube encoder settings).
If a short power interruption is a concern, a UPS for the computer and network equipment is one possible precaution; it does not protect against internet or platform outages and is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.

Do not depend on YouTube to preserve a full replay of one nonstop broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, plan a shorter broadcast strategy or record a local archive as a backup (YouTube archive live streams).
Troubleshoot common startup failures
- OBS opens but does not stream: Check that
--startstreamingis present in the shortcut target or launcher command, and confirm the selected profile, scene, YouTube service, and broadcast. Run the shortcut manually to isolate the launch configuration from the login mechanism. - The automated launch fails or cannot find OBS files: For Task Scheduler or another automated Windows launch, set Start in to the directory containing
obs64.exe, as OBS specifies. - The stream starts but YouTube reports poor health or drops it: Lower resolution or bitrate, check upload stability, retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and test again. Review OBS Automatic Reconnect, but do not treat it as protection from every outage.
- There is video but no audio: Check the audio source and OBS mixer meters in the intended scene; repeat the test with representative audio before leaving the stream unattended.
- The stream returns but the replay is missing or incomplete: A broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use local recording or a planned shorter broadcast if retaining the replay matters.
