To encode a continuous YouTube stream with NVIDIA NVENC, use FFmpeg with a supported NVIDIA GPU, choose a live-compatible video and audio format, set YouTube’s recommended bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, then send the output to YouTube over RTMPS. NVENC handles the video encoding; it does not, by itself, loop your media, protect your stream key, restart a failed process, or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
What NVENC does—and what a 24/7 stream still needs
NVENC is NVIDIA’s dedicated video-encoding hardware, which FFmpeg can access through encoders such as h264_nvenc. NVIDIA also documents CUDA decoding and GPU-resident frames as options that can avoid unnecessary transfers between system memory and the GPU. The available codecs and features depend on your GPU and FFmpeg build; check the NVIDIA Video Codec SDK support information and your local installation.
A continuous broadcast adds work beyond encoding: FFmpeg needs a source that stays available or loops as intended, an audio track, YouTube’s ingest URL and a private stream key, plus a plan to monitor and recover the process. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing representative audio and motion and watching stream health. It does not prescribe a universal FFmpeg looping command or a complete restart and uptime architecture.

Codec
YouTube’s current live guidance lists H.264, HEVC (H.265) and AV1 as ingest options. Use a codec your GPU and FFmpeg build support and that matches your YouTube setup. H.264 is a practical baseline for compatibility, but it is not automatically best for every workflow. Verify hardware support rather than assuming that a GPU supports every codec or feature.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Resolution, frame rate and bitrate
Pick an output resolution and frame rate your source can sustain and your upload connection can carry consistently. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60, and 8 Mbps for both 720p30 and 720p60 — YouTube, current guidance accessed 2026. These are platform recommendations, not universal targets or performance guarantees; consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for other combinations and updates.
For live video, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a keyframe interval of two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. Set the keyframe interval in frames to match the output frame rate—for example, two seconds corresponds to 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. YouTube’s advanced guidance also covers progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Check the current platform guidance and ensure your encoder settings can express the options you need.
Audio and transport
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; 5.1 audio over those protocols is supported only with AAC. YouTube recommends RTMPS over ordinary RTMP because it encrypts data in transit to and through Google’s servers. Use RTMPS when your encoder and ingest endpoint support it.

Use NVIDIA’s FFmpeg example as an encoder reference
NVIDIA’s documented command demonstrates hardware encoding to a file:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesffmpeg -hwaccel cuda -hwaccel_output_format cuda -i input.mp4 -c:v h264_nvenc -b:v 5M output.mp4
It is not a turnkey YouTube live-stream command. In this example, -hwaccel cuda enables CUDA hardware acceleration where supported, -hwaccel_output_format cuda can keep decoded frames on the GPU, -c:v h264_nvenc selects NVIDIA H.264 encoding, and -b:v 5M sets the video bitrate. NVIDIA notes that keeping frames on the GPU can avoid transfers and improve throughput in some workflows; results depend on the media and installation. The example’s output is a file, not a broadcast destination.
Prepare FFmpeg and YouTube before going live
- Confirm the encoder is available. Check your local FFmpeg build’s encoder listing or help for
h264_nvenc(or the encoder for your chosen supported codec). If it is unavailable, the build or GPU may not support the intended path. Verify the GPU’s codec support against NVIDIA’s support information. - Choose your source and looping strategy. Decide how the input will remain available for the duration of the stream. A single recording, playlist, or other source may need a different looping arrangement. The correct method depends on the media and installation; test it rather than assuming one generic loop option works for every source.
- Set the output deliberately. Choose codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, audio encoder and a two-second keyframe interval in line with YouTube’s current guidance. Confirm your source has the audio and motion you expect to broadcast.
- Get the YouTube destination and key. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then configure them in your local encoder environment. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings explains these settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in an article, log, screenshot or shared command.
- Send the live output to the ingest endpoint. Configure FFmpeg’s output for the RTMPS URL and key supplied by YouTube. The exact command depends on your source, audio, chosen codec, installed FFmpeg options and how you protect the key, so there is no single safe, universal command line to copy unchanged.
- Test and monitor. Start with a representative test and check YouTube’s stream-health messages, video, audio and connection behavior. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring health during the event.
Keep a 24/7 process running reliably
Encoding settings cannot prevent every failure. A long-running setup also depends on the machine, GPU, source storage, power, network and the process that launches FFmpeg. Decide how you will detect a stopped process, inspect errors, restart it when appropriate and verify that YouTube is receiving the stream again. The right supervision and recovery design depends on the deployment; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not specify a universal restart policy, redundant connection, UPS or uninterrupted-service guarantee.

- Test the full source-to-YouTube path before relying on it continuously, including the intended audio and movement.
- Monitor both FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream-health feedback so you can distinguish a local process problem from an ingest or network issue.
- Keep the stream key private and avoid embedding it in material that may be copied or exposed.
- Plan for source, power, network and process interruptions; successful NVENC encoding alone does not provide automatic recovery.
Common problems and practical checks
FFmpeg says the NVENC encoder is unavailable
Check whether your FFmpeg build exposes the requested encoder and whether your GPU supports that codec. An NVIDIA GPU alone does not establish support for every codec or feature. Use a compatible build and codec, or choose another supported encoding path.
YouTube reports poor stream health
Compare the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current guidance. Confirm that the uplink can sustain the chosen bitrate and that the source is producing the expected audio and motion. YouTube’s recommendations are starting points, not a guarantee for a particular connection.
The stream stops when the source ends or the process exits
That points to source or process handling rather than the NVENC codec selection itself. Review how the input is meant to loop and how the FFmpeg process is supervised. Test the complete behavior; a file-encoding example does not provide a continuous-playback or restart design.

The stream does not connect to YouTube
Check that the configured destination URL and stream key are the ones provided in YouTube’s live setup, that the key has not been exposed or replaced, and that the encoder is using the intended RTMPS endpoint. Never share the key while troubleshooting.
