How to Automate a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Playlist with OBS in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To automate a 4K/60 YouTube Live playlist with OBS, install VLC, add the files to an OBS VLC Video source in the order you want, enable Loop Playlist if it should repeat, then connect OBS to a scheduled or active YouTube event with its stream URL and key. Playlist playback and YouTube event start/stop are separate: configure YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop if you want encoder activity to control the event. Before leaving it unattended, test the complete setup at the intended resolution, frame rate and upload bitrate.

What you need before setting up the playlist

  • OBS Studio and a local copy of each video you want to play.
  • VLC installed with the same architecture as OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus enough sustained upload capacity for the chosen 4K/60 codec and bitrate.
  • Media you have the rights to broadcast. A playlist being technically playable does not grant permission to stream its contents.

OBS’s regular Media Source supports a range of media formats, including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation for the source options and supported formats.

Build and test the OBS playlist

  1. Install VLC and restart OBS. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS. If the VLC Video source is missing, check that VLC is installed and that the 32-bit/64-bit versions match.
  2. Create a scene for the stream. In OBS, use the Sources panel’s add control and choose VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name.
  3. Add the files in playback order. Add the local media files to the source playlist in the sequence you want them to play. Keep the files accessible to the computer while OBS is running.
  4. Set playlist behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for predictable order. Turn on Loop Playlist to repeat the sequence after the last item. If you use multiple scenes, review the source’s visibility behavior and test scene changes so hiding the scene does not unexpectedly stop or pause playback.
  5. Play through a full test. Confirm that each file starts, that the next file follows as expected, and that the final file either ends or loops as configured. Check audio as well as video.

Create the YouTube event and connect OBS

  1. Enable live streaming early if this is your first stream. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Do not leave channel activation until the scheduled start. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  2. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, configure the event and locate its stream destination and stream key. Scheduling the event does not arrange the OBS playlist; it sets up the YouTube broadcast separately.
  3. Enter the stream details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key or connect the account if that option is available. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  4. Set YouTube’s start and stop behavior deliberately. YouTube’s stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls when enabled. With auto-start enabled, starting the encoder can start the event; with auto-stop enabled, stopping the encoder can end it. Confirm the current settings on your channel and test with a private or unlisted event before relying on unattended operation. See Manage live stream settings.
  5. Start OBS and verify the event. Start the stream from OBS, then check Live Control Room for the incoming signal and stream health. Do not assume the playlist is broadcasting merely because OBS is open.

Choose 4K/60 output settings that your connection can sustain

YouTube’s English encoder guidance gives codec-dependent bitrate ranges for 4K/2160p at 60fps. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or Indian internet connection can sustain them. The page does not state a publication year, and YouTube’s localized guidance may show different tables, so confirm the values presented for your account in Live Control Room.

Codec YouTube’s published 4K/60 bitrate range Practical check
H.264 14 Mbps minimum; 50 Mbps recommended Use only if the encoder and sustained upload can handle the selected rate.
AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps minimum; 35 Mbps recommended Confirm that the selected OBS encoder and your computer support the codec and can encode it reliably.

In OBS, set the output resolution to 3840×2160 and frame rate to 60 fps only if both the encoder and the connection can keep up. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Its guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Test upload speed at the location and time you plan to stream, and leave headroom rather than treating a speed-test peak as guaranteed capacity.
  • Run a test stream with representative motion and audio. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and watch for dropped frames or warnings.
  • If the chosen codec is not supported reliably by your computer, use a codec the machine can encode steadily rather than choosing solely for its lower published bitrate.

Understand the 4K latency and archive trade-offs

YouTube does not offer low- or ultra-low-latency modes for 4K/2160p. YouTube Help says 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. If near-real-time interaction with viewers matters more than 4K resolution, consider lowering the stream resolution. Details: Understand live streaming latency.

YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, according to its encoder setup guidance. Do not treat a longer continuous broadcast as guaranteed to produce a complete archive; plan recording and archive handling around the event’s duration.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for a playlist

Before broadcasting, make sure you have permission for the video, music, game footage and other material in every playlist item. OBS’s playlist controls only determine what plays; they do not resolve copyright or YouTube policy issues. Review the rights and any applicable YouTube rules for your channel and content, and test privately before a public broadcast where appropriate.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video does not appear as an OBS source VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC matching OBS’s architecture (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC), then restart OBS.
Playlist does not repeat Loop Playlist is off. Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
Files play in an unexpected order Shuffle is enabled or the playlist order is wrong. Disable Shuffle Playlist and reorder the files, then test from the beginning.
Playback pauses or stops after changing scenes The source’s behavior when hidden is inconsistent with the scene setup. Review its visibility behavior and test the exact scene changes planned for the stream.
YouTube shows no incoming signal The encoder has not started, or OBS has the wrong service, stream destination or key. Check Settings > Stream, verify the event’s stream details in Live Control Room, and start OBS again. Replace an exposed key.
4K/60 drops frames or stream health degrades The encoder or upload connection cannot sustain the configured output. Check OBS and YouTube diagnostics, verify sustained upload capacity and encoder load, then lower bitrate, resolution or frame rate as needed.
Event does not start or stop with OBS YouTube auto-start or auto-stop is disabled, or the event settings differ from expectations. Review the event’s current stream settings and validate the behavior with a private or unlisted test.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a home computer or OBS running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube only. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or plans and details, then start your free day.
