HandBrake can batch-encode videos from a folder, but its queue creates video files—it does not send them to YouTube Live. Open a folder as a multi-title source, set a destination and unique filenames, add the titles to the queue, then start encoding. To broadcast those files live, you will need a separate encoder that sends a feed to YouTube.
What the HandBrake queue does—and what it does not do
HandBrake’s queue processes encoding jobs and saves their output as video files. It can treat a folder of eligible videos as one virtual source containing multiple titles, which lets you queue several encodes in one workflow. It does not upload those files or create a live broadcast.
YouTube Live is a separate workflow: a live encoder sends a continuous feed to YouTube using your stream key and compatible ingest settings. Keep the two bitrate contexts distinct: a HandBrake file’s encoding settings do not set the bitrate of the live feed.
Prepare the folder and choose a preset
Keep the videos at the folder’s top level
HandBrake’s multi-video folder workflow applies to multiple single-title video files, not discs or disc-like sources. The folder selector ignores nested folders. Put the files you want to encode directly inside the selected folder, or process separate folders individually. See HandBrake’s Using the Queue documentation for the documented workflow.

Start with a suitable preset, then inspect its changes
HandBrake’s Web Creator presets are intended for video-hosting sites such as YouTube and generally aim for high-quality output to reduce generational loss when a platform re-encodes a video. They are a starting point, not a universal requirement. Presets can change resolution or limit peak frame rate, so check the selected preset against your source and intended use. HandBrake describes its presets in its official presets documentation.
Queue a folder of videos in HandBrake
- Open the folder as a source. In HandBrake, open the Open Source dialog and select the folder containing the videos. HandBrake presents eligible files as multiple titles in one virtual source.
- Select a title and preset. Choose a title and a preset appropriate to your intended output. Repeat the selection as needed for the titles you want to encode.
- Set the output destination and unique filenames. Make sure each queued title will have a distinct output name. HandBrake specifically advises including the title in the naming format when adding multiple jobs, so one output does not overwrite another.
- Add the titles to the queue. The menu label depends on your operating system: Windows uses Queue > All Selection to Queue; macOS uses File > Add Titles to Queue…; Linux uses Queue > Add Multiple. Labels can vary by HandBrake version.
- Inspect the pending jobs. Open the queue window and review the list. Remove or edit any incorrect jobs before starting.
- Start the queue. Start processing only after confirming the destination and filenames. Wait for the jobs to finish, then check the output files before using them elsewhere.
Set automatic filenames and the default path
For automatic naming, HandBrake documents these paths: on Windows, go to Tools > Preferences > Output Files, enable automatic naming, set a default path, and include Title in File Format. On macOS, configure automatic naming and include Title in Format in Preferences > General. The exact interface can vary across releases; confirm each job’s displayed output name if you are unsure.

Preview a sample before encoding the whole folder
Use HandBrake’s Preview feature to encode a short portion and inspect the expected result before committing to a large batch. Choose a representative section with the kind of motion and detail in your videos. Preview can help reveal an unsuitable preset or output appearance, but it does not validate every title or any later live-encoder settings. HandBrake explains the feature in its Preview documentation.
Set up YouTube Live separately
To broadcast, configure a separate live encoder to send a feed to YouTube. The live-encoder settings belong in that encoder, not in HandBrake’s file queue. YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current table and requirements; the page is dynamically maintained.

Selected YouTube live-ingest bitrate recommendations
The figures below are YouTube live-ingest recommendations, not HandBrake output-bitrate targets. The YouTube page was checked in 2026; its retrieved content did not state an original publication year.
| Live resolution and frame rate | Codec | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | H.264 | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps |
Choose a live quality your encoder and connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video movement before going live. Its network guidance says to leave 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; monitor stream health during the broadcast and adjust if the connection is unstable. Do not apply YouTube’s live CBR advice to a HandBrake file as if the requirements were the same. YouTube’s separate upload encoding recommendations concern uploaded files, not live ingest; they list MP4, H.264, audio options including AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio, and variable-bitrate guidance.

- Some videos do not appear as titles: confirm they are supported single-title video files in the selected folder’s top level. Nested folders are ignored, and disc or disc-like sources use a different workflow.
- One output replaces another: stop and inspect the destination and naming format. Give every queued title a unique filename; include the title in automatic naming.
- The output is smaller or has a lower frame rate than expected: check the selected preset and its resolution and peak-frame-rate limits before encoding again.
- The live stream is unstable even though the files encoded successfully: HandBrake’s completed files do not establish that your live connection can sustain the separate encoder’s settings. Test the live feed, leave upload headroom, and monitor YouTube stream health.
- YouTube rejects or has trouble with the live feed: verify the live encoder’s stream key, supported ingest protocol and codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, audio format, and bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance. These are live-encoder settings, not queue settings.
