How to Edit Screen Recordings for YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To edit a screen recording for YouTube, cut dead time and mistakes without removing the context a viewer needs, make interface details readable, then export and inspect the finished file before uploading. A practical target is MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC or Opus audio, using the frame rate of the original recording.

1. Review the recording and plan the edit

Watch the full capture before making cuts. Mark errors, long pauses, repeated actions, and sections that do not help the viewer follow or complete the task. For a game capture, that might mean removing a failed menu detour or a long wait while retaining the setup that explains why the next action matters.

Build the edit around the viewer’s sequence of understanding: show what they need to know before the action, keep the action itself, and retain enough of the result to make its outcome clear. A shorter video is not automatically a clearer one.

2. Trim and arrange the useful sections

  1. Remove mistakes and inactivity that do not add useful context.
  2. Arrange the remaining clips in the order a viewer needs to see them.
  3. Review each cut around clicks, menu changes, scene transitions, or other important actions. Leave enough of the lead-in and result that the edit does not make an action seem unexplained or instantaneous.

Pay special attention to cuts during interface interactions: removing the click or transition can make it unclear which setting changed or how the video reached the next screen.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Add only clarifying narration and effects

Use narration, labels, zooms, or cursor emphasis when they help explain an action or draw attention to a detail. Keep labels concise and place them so they do not cover important interface text. Check small text and cursor movement at ordinary playback size, not only while zoomed into the editing timeline.

If the capture includes audio, listen through the whole edit for missing sections, abrupt changes, or unintended silence. Do not assume that a visible audio track guarantees that the final export contains usable sound.

4. Choose the recording container and delivery format separately

The container is the file wrapper, such as MKV or MP4; the codec describes how the video or audio is encoded. Changing a container alone does not improve image quality. Also, the format used to record is not necessarily the format you should deliver after editing.

OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide, published March 26, 2023, recommends MKV for many recording workflows because it can be remuxed into a more compatible format. It also identifies fragmented MP4 or MOV as useful options for uploading to platforms such as YouTube or editing in common software such as Adobe Premiere or DaVinci Resolve. Choose based on what your editor accepts and what your final upload workflow requires; if you must change the codec, that is re-encoding, not merely changing the container.

5. Export for YouTube

YouTube Help’s recommended upload encoding settings specify MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, progressive scan, and the frame rate used during recording. The page says the detailed encoding features it describes are available to partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager, so treat its bitrates as recommendations rather than a guarantee that every export or upload will behave identically.

SDR video bitrate recommendations

Resolution Standard frame rates (24, 25, 30 fps) High frame rates (48, 50, 60 fps)
1080p 8 Mbps 12 Mbps
1440p 16 Mbps 24 Mbps
2160p / 4K 35–45 Mbps 53–68 Mbps

YouTube Help also recommends stereo audio at 384 kbps and an audio sample rate of 48 kHz. Use the frame-rate category that matches your recording; do not change the project frame rate just to select a higher bitrate.

Resolution and aspect ratio

Use 16:9 when it matches the source and your intended desktop presentation. YouTube says its player adapts to other aspect ratios, so a non-16:9 capture does not have to be forced into a 16:9 frame. Avoid stretching the image to fill a different shape.

6. Inspect the export before uploading

  • Play the exported file from beginning to end; do not rely only on the editor preview.
  • Check that cuts preserve the steps and transitions needed to understand the demonstration.
  • Confirm there are no unintended blank sections, missing audio, or clipped narration.
  • Check interface text, labels, and cursor emphasis at ordinary playback size.
  • Verify the final file plays correctly and that its export settings match your intended resolution, frame rate, and audio.

Only upload after the exported file passes those checks. Editing guidance here is practical workflow advice; YouTube’s cited page supplies encoding recommendations, not a required editing method.
