YouTube does not document a built-in giveaway picker, so the creator is responsible for a fair, traceable process and for complying with applicable laws.
Write the rules before you announce the prize
YouTube says, “You’re solely responsible for your contest.” Its contest policies and guidelines require creators to administer the contest and award prizes according to the official rules. Publish the rules somewhere viewers can access before entries open, and link them in the stream description or another clearly identified location.
Include the details viewers need to decide whether and how to enter:
- Eligibility: who may enter, including any age, location, or other restrictions.
- Dates and times: when entry opens and closes, with the relevant time zone.
- Entry method: exactly what a viewer must do and whether each person may enter once or more than once.
- Prize: what it is, its quantity, and any material conditions on receiving or using it.
- Selection: how and when you will select the winner, and how you will handle an invalid or unresponsive selection.
- Notification and delivery: how you will contact the winner, how long they have to respond, and how the prize will be delivered.
- Disclosures and privacy: any disclosures required by law, what entrant information you collect, why you need it, and how you will use and retain it.
Link YouTube’s Community Guidelines and explain that entries that violate them may be disqualified. Include the statement required by YouTube that it is not the contest sponsor and is released from contest-related liability. YouTube’s contest-policy page is informational, not legal advice; the creator must check applicable federal, state, and local requirements. Lottery laws may apply, and the rules can vary by location.

Keep entry free and separate from channel metrics
YouTube’s policy states: “Your contest must be free of charge to enter (don’t forget to check your local lottery laws!).” Do not require a purchase, Super Chat, gift, or other payment to enter. Do not make entry conditions designed to inflate views, likes, dislikes, or subscriber counts.
You can tell viewers about your channel or ask them to take part in normal stream conversation, but do not make a subscription, like, or other engagement metric a giveaway requirement. Keep the chance to win independent of payment and metric boosting.

Set up a simple chat entry
For a modest chat-based giveaway, a short, exact entry instruction is easy to explain and follow. This is a practical approach, not a format YouTube mandates. YouTube Live Chat appears on watch pages, not embedded players, and its current documented limits are up to 11 messages every 30 seconds and up to 200 characters per message. Special characters, URLs, and HTML tags are not allowed in chat, so keep the prompt plain and brief. These are platform limits, not suggested entry volumes.
- Before going live: put the official-rules link and entry window in the stream description. Make sure the rules match what you plan to say on air.
- At the start: read the eligibility, prize, entry instruction, closing time, selection method, and rules location aloud. Do not rely on viewers finding an earlier chat message.
- When entries open: give one exact plain-text message to post, such as “Enter: game night.” Specify whether only one message counts per person and whether replies or other phrases count.
- While entries are open: keep the instruction visible or repeat it periodically. Do not promise that every viewer will see every entry: chat presentation and moderation can affect visibility, and subscriber-only chat may limit some viewers’ access to chat features.
- At the stated close: announce that entries are closed and stop accepting late messages. Apply the eligibility and duplicate-entry rules you published.
Live Chat’s rate limit means a chat can move quickly, particularly during a busy stream. If you cannot reliably capture and review eligible entries, use an entry process you can administer accurately rather than implying every chat message will be included.

Draw, announce, and contact the winner
Use the selection method stated in the rules. Keep a record sufficient to apply your eligibility and duplicate-entry rules and to explain how the selected entrant qualified. YouTube does not document or endorse a particular picker, randomizer, or audit method; do not describe a tool or process as YouTube-approved unless YouTube says so.
- Close entries at the published time and exclude entries that do not meet the written rules.
- Apply the promised selection method consistently to the eligible entries.
- Announce the result clearly on the stream. Avoid exposing private contact details or other entrant information.
- Contact the selected entrant using the method in your rules, request only information needed to award the prize, and follow the stated response deadline and alternate-selection procedure.
- Deliver the prize as promised and retain only the records you need, in line with the privacy notice and applicable law.
For a larger stream, consider whether chat alone gives you a manageable, accessible, and sufficiently auditable entry record. An external form may make eligibility easier to check, but it adds friction and personal-data handling. Whatever method you choose, make it explicit in the rules and do not imply that a specific picker has been verified or endorsed by YouTube.

Do not mistake polls or donations for giveaway tools
YouTube Live polls are for voting, not a documented giveaway entry list or random draw. YouTube says a poll can have two to four options, last up to 24 hours, and will not appear in chat replays. Do not call a poll an official giveaway picker unless your rules and complete eligible-entry process actually support that use.
YouTube Giving and Virtual Items are separate features, not giveaway-entry mechanisms. Do not require donations, paid items, or gifts as a condition of entry.

Choose the broadcast setup that suits your stream; keep the contest rules, entry window, and draw process clear regardless of how you go live.
