To bring a YouTube encoder back after a VPS reboot, run it as a systemd service, enable that service at boot, and configure a suitable restart policy. Then verify both that the encoder process is running and that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. A service restart can recover from a reboot or process exit; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast or detect every frozen-media failure.

What automatic recovery can—and cannot—do

Recovery has several distinct triggers. A VPS reboot stops the encoder, so the service must start at boot. An encoder crash calls for a process restart policy. A process that remains alive but stops sending usable audio or video may require a separate watchdog. YouTube-side auto-start and auto-stop settings affect stream lifecycle behavior, but do not replace supervision of the encoder on your VPS.

Approach What can trigger it What it does not establish Operational consideration
systemd boot enablement Host boot That YouTube is receiving a valid feed Requires a correctly configured unit, dependencies, and permissions.
systemd restart policy Service process exit, according to the selected policy and service result That a still-running process is producing advancing media Repeated failures can interact with systemd start-rate limits.
Separate progress watchdog A configured indication of stalled encoder progress Guaranteed detection of every stream or platform problem Adds complexity; test its detection and restart behavior.
YouTube auto-start/auto-stop settings Stream lifecycle behavior controlled by YouTube settings That the VPS encoder will start after a host reboot Check the settings for the particular stream; they are not host supervision.

YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its Manage live stream settings guidance. Treat the key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream.

Before configuring the service

  • In YouTube Live Control Room, identify the stream URL and stream key used by your encoder. YouTube also documents connecting an encoder in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  • Make sure the VPS can access the media files, configuration, and any other inputs the encoder needs after boot.
  • Choose a dedicated, non-root service account where practical, and confirm it has the required file and directory permissions.
  • Keep the stream key out of public unit files, screenshots, shell transcripts, and shared logs. Use a protected configuration or secret-handling method appropriate to your system.
  • Check how your distribution brings the network online. The example below requests network-online.target, but whether that target meaningfully waits for connectivity depends on the distribution and its network manager.

If the key has been exposed or compromised, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder’s protected configuration. Do not paste a real key into a troubleshooting post or a command example.

Run the encoder as a systemd service

1. Create a unit for your encoder

Create a unit file such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-encoder.service. Adapt the paths, user, working directory, and command for your VPS. This example shows the service structure only; the bracketed text is not literal FFmpeg syntax. Do not put a real stream key directly in the example or an exposed ExecStart line.

[Unit]
Description=YouTube live encoder
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
WorkingDirectory=/srv/youtube-stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [your encoder arguments]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Restart=on-failure is an example, not a universal choice. Select a policy based on how your encoder exits and how you intend to stop or restart the service manually. Restart=always can be appropriate in some designs, but consider its interaction with manual stops and the service’s behavior before using it. Restart rules and start-rate limiting can vary with systemd version and unit configuration; consult the service documentation for your distribution and release. For example, Ubuntu’s systemd.service documentation for Resolute describes service restart behavior and its interaction with start-rate limiting.

2. Reload systemd, enable the service, and start it

After saving the unit, run the following as an administrator. Replace the service name if you used a different one.

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable youtube-encoder.service
sudo systemctl start youtube-encoder.service
sudo systemctl status youtube-encoder.service

enable arranges for the service to start at boot; start launches it now. status reports service state, but an active service alone does not prove that YouTube has received usable media.

3. Inspect the service journal

Use the journal to identify failures such as a missing executable, inaccessible media, bad permissions, invalid arguments, unavailable networking, or ingest and credential errors:

sudo journalctl -u youtube-encoder.service -b --no-pager

The -b option limits the view to the current boot. Review access to logs and configuration as carefully as access to the stream key; avoid sharing output that could expose credentials.

Test reboot recovery end to end

  1. Schedule a safe test. Use a maintenance window or test stream so a planned reboot does not unexpectedly interrupt an audience-facing broadcast.
  2. Reboot the VPS. After it returns, check sudo systemctl status youtube-encoder.service and confirm the service was started.
  3. Read the current-boot journal. Run sudo journalctl -u youtube-encoder.service -b --no-pager. Look for missing files, permission failures, network timing problems, invalid stream credentials, or encoder exit errors.
  4. Check YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the preview or incoming feed appears and review stream health and any messages. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during a broadcast; see Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  5. Test the failure mode you care about. A successful reboot test demonstrates boot startup for that setup; it does not test a frozen encoder or every possible network or platform failure.

Handle silent stalls separately

A process supervisor reacts to service and process lifecycle conditions. If FFmpeg remains alive while audio or video stops advancing, systemd may continue to report the service as active. Where unattended operation justifies the extra work, add a separately tested health check or watchdog that detects a relevant lack of encoder progress and triggers recovery. A public Ubuntu VPS streaming project documents one example of a layered FFmpeg and watchdog setup; it is an implementation example, not a universal guarantee or a substitute for testing your own feed.

Decide what signal the watchdog will monitor, how long a stall must last before action, and what it will restart. Test both detection and recovery without exposing credentials. Avoid adding an untested watchdog that could repeatedly restart a healthy stream or mask a persistent configuration problem.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The service is inactive after reboot

  • Confirm the unit is enabled with systemctl is-enabled youtube-encoder.service.
  • After editing the unit, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload and check that systemd is using the intended unit.
  • Review the unit’s user, permissions, working directory, and dependencies, including whether the network-online target is configured meaningfully on this distribution.

The service starts and immediately exits

  • Read sudo journalctl -u youtube-encoder.service -b --no-pager for the first error, not just the final exit status.
  • Check the executable path, media and configuration paths, file permissions, and encoder arguments.
  • Verify the stream URL and key in the encoder’s protected configuration. If the key is no longer valid or was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the configuration.

The service is active, but YouTube shows no feed or poor health

Check encoder output and YouTube Live Control Room. A running process does not prove YouTube is receiving a valid stream. Investigate ingest, credentials, network connectivity, and encoder messages, then confirm that the feed and stream health recover.

Restart attempts stop after repeated failures

Investigate the original failure first. Systemd restart behavior interacts with start-rate limiting, so a persistent error can exhaust allowed starts and leave the service stopped. Check the unit and your distribution’s systemd documentation before changing limits; raising them without fixing the cause can create a rapid restart loop.

The process remains active but the picture or sound freezes

Systemd may not recognize a media stall as a process failure. Add and test a progress or health watchdog if this failure mode matters for your stream.

The encoder reconnects, but the stream lifecycle is unexpected

Review the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop controls in YouTube Live Control Room. These settings influence YouTube-side lifecycle behavior; they do not make the VPS service start at boot.
