tcp_keepalive=1 enables FFmpeg’s basic TCP keepalive mechanism, which can help detect a dead peer on an idle connection. It is not an RTMP reconnect switch and does not guarantee that a YouTube stream will stay connected. If FFmpeg reports “failed to connect to server — connection timed out,” first verify the YouTube server URL, the RTMP or RTMPS protocol, and encoder support for RTMPS; then investigate the network and stream health.
What FFmpeg’s TCP keepalive option does—and does not do
FFmpeg describes tcp_keepalive as a way to “detect dead peers and help maintain long-lived idle connections.” The option is off by default in the documented TCP protocol options. Enabling it asks the operating system to use its basic TCP keepalive mechanism for the connection.
That is a limited transport-level aid, not a promise that YouTube will keep an ingest session open. TCP keepalive probes an idle socket; it is not RTMP application data, a repair for a connection that is actively failing, or a policy for restarting a publishing session. FFmpeg’s documentation does not establish that it prevents YouTube from closing a stalled stream. [FFmpeg protocol documentation]
Keepalive timers such as the idle interval, probe interval, and probe count are governed by operating-system defaults when using this toggle; the documented FFmpeg switch does not configure those timers. Do not assume a universal timer value or a guaranteed improvement in stream uptime.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Diagnose the timeout in the right order
“Connection timed out” describes what happened, not why. A timeout at startup while connecting to the ingest server differs from a stream that connected successfully and dropped later. Work through the endpoint and network checks before changing unrelated FFmpeg flags.
- Compare the publishing URL with YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the current server URL from the Live Control Room and compare it with the URL in the FFmpeg output. Check for a typo, stale endpoint, or unintended whitespace. Treat the stream key as a secret: never include it in published commands, screenshots, logs, or unredacted support requests. YouTube directs creators to Live Control Room for the stream URL and key. [YouTube: Set up your stream]
- Check the protocol and RTMPS support. If the selected endpoint uses RTMPS, confirm the URL uses the secure protocol and that your installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS and its TLS requirements. YouTube’s troubleshooting for “failed to connect to server — connection timed out” specifically recommends checking the server URL, the
rtmpsprotocol, and encoder support. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. [YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream errors] [YouTube: Set up your stream] - Check the network path while the failure occurs. Confirm the encoder host can reach the endpoint. Look for packet loss, firewall or proxy interference, local network interruptions, and insufficient upload capacity at the time of streaming. YouTube says connection disruptions can break a live stream and recommends reliable connectivity and upload bandwidth with headroom. A wired Ethernet connection may help if the local Wi-Fi link is unstable, but it cannot fix an ISP route, an incorrect endpoint, or a YouTube-side event. [YouTube: Fix live stream issues] [YouTube: Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions]
- Record the actual FFmpeg build and the failure timing. Capture the FFmpeg version and build configuration, the command with the stream key replaced by a placeholder, relevant error lines, and timestamps. Note whether the problem occurs at startup or after streaming for a while, and whether the output uses RTMP or RTMPS. Option support and semantics can vary by release and build; check the help or protocol documentation for the installed binary.
- Use TCP keepalive only as a limited test. If the relevant TCP transport supports it, add
tcp_keepalive=1in the correct output-connection context and compare the resulting behavior under controlled conditions. Keepalive may help detect a dead peer on an idle connection. It does not show that a YouTube timeout is fixed, and it does not supply automatic reconnection. - Separate reconnect behavior from keepalive. Recovery after a dropped publishing connection requires a reconnect-capable wrapper or a reconnect feature applicable to the specific FFmpeg protocol implementation and version. Check retry limits, delay or backoff, and whether the source can continue after reconnection. Test the behavior deliberately; do not assume that enabling keepalive restarts a stream or preserves every frame.
Do not confuse TCP keepalive with FFmpeg’s RTMP timeout
FFmpeg documents an RTMP timeout option as a maximum wait for an incoming connection that implies listen mode. That is not a general outgoing-publisher keepalive setting for a YouTube stream. An I/O timeout and reconnection behavior are separate controls with semantics that depend on the protocol implementation and FFmpeg version. Check the documentation for your installed build rather than repurposing an option based on its name. [FFmpeg protocol documentation]

Check YouTube’s encoder settings separately
Correct encoder settings help YouTube ingest the stream as expected, but they do not keep a TCP session alive. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Its guidance also covers supported encoder configuration and stream-health monitoring. Meet those recommendations independently of any keepalive experiment. [YouTube: Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions]
What to collect before asking for help
- FFmpeg version and build configuration.
- The complete command with the stream key replaced by a placeholder.
- Exact error lines and timestamps, with credentials redacted.
- Whether the timeout happens while connecting or after the stream has been running.
- Whether the output endpoint is RTMP or RTMPS.
- Whether other network traffic or devices lose connectivity at the same time.
- Stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room, correlated with encoder logs and any router or network events.
YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing its messages. Without the timing, logs, endpoint, and network context, a timeout alone is not enough to identify a definitive cause. [YouTube: Fix live stream issues]
