Green frames can come from the original game recording, an FFmpeg conversion, a playback decoder, or YouTube’s processing. First find the earliest stage where they appear; then target that part of the workflow. For a new SDR YouTube export, MP4 with H.264, progressive video, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, the recording’s frame rate, and BT.709 are a compatibility baseline—not a guarantee that already-corrupted frames will be repaired. YouTube’s upload recommendations and FFmpeg’s format-selection behavior help guide the diagnosis.
Find where the green frames first appear
Do not start by changing random FFmpeg flags. Compare the same moment in the original recording, a short FFmpeg output, and the uploaded YouTube video. Keep an untouched copy of the source so tests do not overwrite your only original.
- Check the original recording locally. Seek to the earliest known bad timestamp. If possible, play it in a second player or decoder.
- Make a short test output. Use the same FFmpeg command and settings as the full rerun, but limit the test to a brief section around the affected moment. Inspect that file locally before uploading it.
- Compare the upload. If both local files look clean but YouTube playback shows green frames, focus on the export and YouTube processing path. If the original is clean but the FFmpeg output is not, focus on the command, build, decoder, encoder, and conversion log.
- Note whether the timestamp and symptom repeat. The same green frames across files and players point to a different stage than a problem visible in just one playback path.
This sequence isolates the likely stage; the symptom alone does not establish a root cause.
Collect the details that can identify the fault
Save the exact command and relevant console output rather than paraphrasing them. Record:

- The FFmpeg version and build information from
ffmpeg -version. - Input container and stream details, including codec, pixel format, dimensions, frame rate, and color metadata. A useful inspection command is
ffprobe -hide_banner -show_streams -show_format input.mp4. - The first timestamp where the frames turn green, and whether that timestamp is affected in the original, local FFmpeg output, or YouTube playback.
- Whether another player shows the same issue, and whether hardware decoding or a particular decoder is involved.
- The complete FFmpeg log, especially format-conversion warnings, decoder errors, and encoder failures.
FFmpeg documentation is updated over time, and the current documentation may describe a newer revision than the one installed on your system. Compare the local version with the behavior and options documented for that build; do not assume every current option exists in an older package. FFmpeg documentation
Check pixel format and encoder support before changing the command
A requested output pixel format does not prove that FFmpeg encoded in that format. FFmpeg documents that when an encoder cannot support the requested format, it may warn and select the best format the encoder supports. Do not copy a pixel-format option blindly from another creator’s command: the appropriate choice depends on the input, encoder, filters, and intended output. If you prefix a requested pixel format with +, FFmpeg can fail instead of selecting another supported format; the prefix also disables automatic conversion in filtergraphs. That can be useful as a diagnostic constraint when you know why you are using it, but it changes conversion behavior and is not a general repair switch.
Once you have established that the source decodes cleanly, make a controlled, short test using a format combination supported by your encoder. Compare the result at the same timestamp. If the source is already damaged, a different output format will not restore image data that is missing.

Separate a bad file from a playback problem
If the green frames appear in one player but not another, do not immediately conclude that the encoded file is damaged. The playback path or decoder may be involved. Check the same file and timestamp in another player and compare those results with the FFmpeg output and original.
FFmpeg’s ffplay documentation includes the output_corrupt option, which allows potentially corrupted frames to be output. It changes playback behavior; it does not reconstruct the intended image or repair the file. ffplay documentation

Use YouTube’s SDR recommendations as an export baseline
For a new standard dynamic range (SDR) gaming upload, YouTube recommends an MP4 container, H.264 video, progressive scan, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, and the same frame rate used for recording. Its SDR color recommendation is BT.709. The guidance also describes how YouTube handles unspecified or unsupported color metadata. YouTube video upload encoding recommendations
- Check the actual output stream properties with
ffprobe; do not infer them from the options in the command. - Keep frame rate aligned with the recording rather than changing it as an arbitrary fix.
- Check color tags separately. Color shifts and green or corrupted frames are not automatically the same problem.
- Use these recommendations to improve compatibility, not as proof that YouTube caused the defect or that conforming to them will repair a damaged source.
