What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Monitor a 24/7 YouTube stream at three levels: whether FFmpeg is running, whether its machine-readable progress is advancing, and whether YouTube Live Control Room reports healthy ingest and the stream is actually playable. No single one proves the whole path is working. Save timestamped FFmpeg logs, alert on process exits and stale progress, and check YouTube’s health messages and a viewer-facing playback check.
What FFmpeg logs can—and cannot—tell you
FFmpeg logs show what the local encoder reports; its progress records show whether its work appears to be advancing. Neither confirms that YouTube is receiving the stream or that viewers can watch it. YouTube Live Control Room provides a separate ingest-side signal, while checking the watch page from an independent device or network helps verify playback.
Use these signals together. A process can remain alive while stalled, and FFmpeg can continue reporting progress while the YouTube connection or stream health has a problem. YouTube recommends both testing stream accessibility and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. See YouTube’s streaming tips and live-stream metrics.
Set up persistent FFmpeg logs and progress monitoring
1. Save timestamped logs
FFmpeg writes its log messages to stderr by default. Add a timestamped, level-aware log format and redirect stderr to a persistent file. For example, the following pattern uses FFmpeg’s logging options; confirm option support and behavior against the FFmpeg build installed on your system:

This is a command shape, not a complete streaming command: supply the actual input, encoding and mapping options, and the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key for your broadcast. Rotate logs so a continuous process does not fill the disk.
FFmpeg’s -report option or FFREPORT environment variable can save a report containing the command and log output. Treat report files as sensitive: if a stream key appears in the command line, it may be recorded there. Keep the key out of shared logs and process listings where your environment allows, restrict report access, and reset the key in YouTube Live Control Room if it is exposed. YouTube explains stream keys in its encoder setup guidance.
2. Monitor progress separately from log text
The -progress option emits periodic key-value records suitable for a wrapper, supervisor or monitoring agent. Each update ends with a progress field. -stats_period sets the update interval; the example uses five seconds as an illustrative setting, not a universal recommendation or alert threshold.

In the example, progress goes to stdout and human-readable log messages go to stderr. A service wrapper or monitoring process must consume stdout, parse the key=value records, and record when the last update arrived. Do not merge the two streams without accounting for their different formats. A progress=continue record indicates FFmpeg reported an update; it does not establish that YouTube ingest is healthy.
3. Supervise FFmpeg and choose local alert thresholds
Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor or service manager that records exit status and applies a deliberate restart policy. Alert on distinct conditions rather than treating “process exists” as “stream is online”:
- Process exit: notify and preserve the exit status and final log lines.
- Stale progress: alert if progress updates stop beyond a threshold you choose based on the configured interval and how much interruption you can tolerate.
- YouTube health or preview problem: alert or investigate when Live Control Room reports an error or the expected preview disappears.
There is no universal FFmpeg or YouTube stale-heartbeat threshold established here. Set one for your operation, and test that it catches a stopped encoder without producing excessive false alarms. Review FFmpeg’s advanced options documentation for progress and reporting behavior, and check the documentation for your installed version.

Check YouTube’s ingest health and viewer playback
Use Live Control Room for YouTube-side signals
Check stream health and status in YouTube Live Control Room, including the specific messages shown, and correlate them with the time in FFmpeg’s logs. YouTube error notices are timestamped; its guidance distinguishes critical red errors from moderate yellow issues. A healthy local process does not overrule an unhealthy YouTube status.
Verify what viewers can actually see and hear
If the dashboard appears healthy but viewers report a failure, open the watch page from an independent device or network and check both audio and video. A dashboard signal is useful, but it does not prove every viewer can play the stream smoothly. YouTube advises testing that a stream is accessible and monitoring its audio and video quality.

FFmpeg is running, but progress is stale
Treat the encoder as stalled until you identify the cause. Check its logs, host resources and source input, then compare the gap with the progress interval and your locally chosen alert threshold. A live process without fresh progress is not evidence that frames are advancing.
FFmpeg progresses, but YouTube reports an unhealthy stream or has no preview
Check the output connection, ingest URL and stream-key configuration, outbound network and available upload bandwidth. Read YouTube’s specific status or error message and line it up with the FFmpeg and host logs. This combination points beyond simple process failure: FFmpeg may be active while delivery to YouTube is not working correctly.
The dashboard looks healthy, but viewers cannot watch
Test the watch page independently and inspect actual audio and video quality. If only some viewers are affected, an independent network or device check can help distinguish a playback-access issue from a local dashboard view.

A network interruption breaks delivery
Check outbound connectivity and leave headroom above the stream’s required upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends a 20% margin and warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Its streaming tips cover network reliability and testing.
Do not assume FFmpeg input reconnect options guarantee recovery of an RTMP or RTMPS output connection. Reconnect controls are protocol-specific; verify the behavior for the relevant protocol and installed build in FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the full path and prepare for failover
- Confirm encoder credentials: check the configured YouTube ingest URL and stream key, and keep the key confidential.
- Run a test before relying on the continuous stream: inspect the Live Control Room preview and verify that the watch page is accessible.
- Exercise monitoring: confirm that timestamped logs persist, the progress consumer receives updates, and your supervisor records process exit status.
- Check YouTube signals: watch stream health and status, and note the timestamps of errors for later correlation.
- Check capacity: measure upload capability for the stream and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth margin.
- Test the recovery plan: validate backup-encoder failover if you depend on it, and confirm any local archive is intact where applicable.
YouTube recommends testing the setup, previewing before going live, checking stream accessibility, monitoring audio and video, and testing backup-encoder failover. A restart policy alone is not a tested failover plan.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos or a playlist, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to managing an always-on local encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
