Use ffprobe to inspect the delivered video file’s encoded dimensions, frame-rate fields, and frame count. A reported 3840×2160 resolution and roughly 60 fps are evidence about what the file contains—not proof that a camera originally captured genuine 4K at 60 fps. To check that claim, also inspect motion and detail, then compare the file with camera originals or other production records.
What a file check can—and cannot—establish
File inspection tells you what the encoded video stream reports: its dimensions, frame-rate values, and, where available, frame count. It can reveal mismatches between a “4K 60fps” label and the stream’s reported properties.
It cannot establish a file’s full capture history. Footage may have been enlarged from a lower resolution, converted to a higher frame rate, or edited to repeat frames. Metadata and visual inspection can raise or lower confidence, but when authenticity matters, compare against the camera original, recording records, or independently retained source material.
YouTube’s viewer playback is a separate matter: YouTube says it transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats, so the quality a viewer can select is not a direct test of your source file or incoming encoder settings (YouTube live encoder settings).

Inspect the delivered file with ffprobe
FFmpeg’s ffprobe gathers information from multimedia streams and can display stream details, frame data, and frame counts (ffprobe documentation). Run this command on the exact file you plan to loop:
ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -count_frames -show_streams -show_format -of json input.mp4
Replace input.mp4 with your file’s path. The command selects the first video stream, requests a frame count, and reports stream and container information in JSON. Field availability varies by file format and stream; a missing field is not a reason to substitute a guessed value.

Confirm the pixel dimensions
In the selected video stream, look for width and height values of 3840 and 2160. Those dimensions mean the encoded stream is 3840×2160. They do not tell you whether the original footage had that much captured detail: lower-resolution images can be scaled to those dimensions.
Check the actual delivered file, not only its filename, project settings, or export preset. A project set to 4K does not guarantee that the resulting file is 4K.

Read the frame-rate fields carefully
Inspect the stream’s frame-rate fields, commonly shown as rational values such as 60000/1001 or 60/1. A rounded display of “60” can conceal a different cadence, so retain the underlying numerator and denominator when precision matters. Fields may differ because they describe different aspects of a stream; do not treat one rounded number as conclusive proof of how frames were captured.
Cross-check frame count against duration
Compare the reported frame count with the stream or file duration. Dividing the frame count by the duration gives a useful average-cadence check. A substantial mismatch can point to a mistaken frame-rate assumption, unusual timing, or a problem with the file. It is not a forensic test by itself: variable frame timing and container details can affect interpretation.

For closer examination, use ffprobe’s frame-display options and review frames across the file, rather than relying only on a summary of the stream.
Look for enlargement and repeated frames
Inspect representative frames from different parts of the video, including scenes with motion and fine detail. Look for softness or scaling artifacts that might suggest lower-resolution material was enlarged. Watch motion for repeated frames: a file can report a nominal 60 fps while displaying the same image across successive frames.

- Choose motion that makes cadence visible, such as a moving camera, scrolling scene, or fast-moving subject.
- Check more than one short section; a still scene cannot meaningfully demonstrate frame cadence.
- Treat softness and repeated imagery as clues, not proof. Compression, focus, lighting, and the scene itself can affect apparent detail.
Visual evidence cannot establish provenance. If the claim is about what a camera originally recorded, compare the derivative file with camera originals or other reliable production records.

A valid 4K 60fps source does not automatically make the live stream 4K 60fps. The encoder, ingest configuration, and YouTube Live settings must also support the intended output. YouTube’s English live encoder guidance supports 4K/2160p at 60 fps and recommends 35 Mbps for H.264; that is a platform recommendation for live ingest, not a measurement of your source file or a universal quality threshold. Its live guidance also gives a 10–40 Mbps range for AV1/H.265 at 4K/60, so check the current codec-specific table before configuring a stream (YouTube live encoder settings).
- Resolution and frame rate: Set the encoder to the intended 2160p/60 output and confirm those settings in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Codec and transport: YouTube’s English live guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video and recommends RTMPS.
- Bitrate mode: The guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding.
- Keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Latency: YouTube’s guidance says the 4K/2160 option does not offer the low-latency improvement option and is set to normal latency.
- Test and monitor: Test before the live event with representative motion and audio, and watch stream-health messages while live.
Live-ingest recommendations are not upload-encoding recommendations. For uploaded videos, YouTube advises encoding at the same frame rate at which the content was recorded and lists 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps as common rates. Its recommended SDR upload bitrate range for 2160p high-frame-rate video is 53–68 Mbps; that range applies to uploads, not live ingest (YouTube recommended upload encoding settings).
Troubleshoot common verification results
- The file is labelled 4K, but ffprobe reports lower dimensions: Inspect the exact exported file and check whether the wrong version was selected. A filename or project preset does not override the encoded stream’s reported dimensions.
- The file reports 3840×2160 but looks soft: The dimensions establish output size, not original detail. Check representative fine-detail frames and seek camera originals or production records if authenticity matters.
- The file reports 60 fps, but motion looks uneven: Review motion across multiple sections and inspect frame-level output for repeated images. The nominal rate alone cannot establish that 60 distinct frames were captured each second.
- The frame count and duration do not align with the reported rate: Treat the calculation as a warning to inspect timing and stream fields more closely, not as an immediate verdict. Frame count divided by duration is a cross-check, not a complete forensic analysis.
- The source checks out, but the live stream is not delivered as expected: Check encoder resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, and YouTube stream-health messages. Viewer playback options may differ because YouTube transcodes the incoming stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube loop of uploaded video, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud after you upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not verify whether a source file is genuine camera-captured 4K/60; inspect the file first with the workflow above.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: your computer and home connection do not need to keep the stream running.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; uploaded video streams as made, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or plans and pricing, then start your free day.
