To make a MOV video work in an app or website that expects MP4, first check the video and audio streams inside it. On a Mac, Apple’s extension-change shortcut applies only to MOV files using H.264; for other cases, make a converted copy in iMovie. If you use FFmpeg, choose between remuxing compatible streams and re-encoding them. Renaming a file does not convert its codecs.
What changes when you convert MOV to MP4?
MOV and MP4 are container formats: each can package video, audio and metadata. The extension identifies the container, but the encoded streams inside the file determine whether a particular app or website can use it. MOV and MP4 are related formats, but changing a filename does not make an unsupported codec compatible.
Apple describes its extension-change shortcut for MOV files that use H.264. For other files—or if you need a different resolution or file size—you need an export or conversion workflow. Apple’s QuickTime Player guide says, “QuickTime Player doesn’t export movies as MP4 videos”; Apple points users to iMovie for conversion.
Choose the right method
| Method | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Change the extension | Leaves the streams, resolution and file size unchanged; it is not a codec conversion. | The MOV uses H.264 and you want to try the Mac shortcut for a target that accepts the file. |
| Export with iMovie | Creates a new output copy through an app export workflow. | The H.264 shortcut does not apply, the target rejects the renamed file, or you need different output properties. |
| FFmpeg remux | Copies compatible encoded streams into a different container without re-encoding them. | The streams are suitable for MP4 and only the container needs to change. |
| FFmpeg re-encode | Creates newly encoded streams and can change output properties. | The streams are unsuitable for the destination or you need a different resolution or size. |
On a Mac: try the extension change only for H.264
- Keep the original. In Finder, duplicate the MOV first if you need to preserve the source.
- Check the codec. Select the file in Finder, open Get Info, and inspect its codec. Continue with this shortcut only if it uses H.264.
- Rename the extension. Change the filename extension from
.movto.mp4. - Test the result. Open or upload the renamed file in the app or website where you need it. If it is rejected, use an export or conversion workflow instead.
A successful extension change leaves the resolution and file size the same. If the codec is not H.264, or if you need a smaller file or different resolution, renaming is not the right method.

On a Mac: export a converted copy with iMovie
- Open iMovie and open or create a movie project.
- Import the MOV into the project.
- Use the app’s share or export workflow to create a new output file. Choose an MP4-compatible export option if one is offered; available options can vary with the installed iMovie version.
- Save the output separately from the original, then check that the saved file plays and is accepted by your intended app or website.
QuickTime Player’s documented video export is MOV rather than MP4. If your goal is an MP4 file, use iMovie’s export workflow instead of assuming QuickTime Player can export that container.
With FFmpeg: decide between remuxing and re-encoding
Remux when the streams are already suitable
A remux puts compatible encoded streams into a new container while copying them rather than encoding them again. It avoids an additional lossy encoding step, but it cannot make an unsupported codec or incompatible track acceptable just by changing the wrapper. Inspect the input, consider which tracks you need to preserve, and test the resulting file in the destination.

Re-encode when the streams or output need to change
Re-encoding creates new encoded streams. It may be necessary when the target cannot handle the existing streams or when you need a different resolution or file size. It takes processing time and can affect quality. Select output settings for the destination and keep the source until you have verified the result.
FFmpeg’s format documentation describes MOV and MP4 within the related QuickTime/MOV muxer family and their relationship to ISO BMFF. That relationship does not mean every MOV can be remuxed successfully for every app: compatibility depends on the streams and the destination’s requirements.

Check the converted file where you plan to use it
- Confirm that the output opens and plays, rather than relying on the filename extension alone.
- Try the actual upload or app workflow that prompted the conversion; a file that plays locally may still be rejected by a destination with different requirements.
- If the file is rejected after an extension change or remux, investigate stream compatibility and use a conversion that re-encodes when needed.
- If size or resolution is the goal, use an export or re-encode workflow with suitable settings; a rename preserves both.
Common problems and fixes
The renamed MP4 still will not upload
Renaming changes the extension, not the contained streams. Check whether the MOV uses H.264; even then, the target may reject the file. Use iMovie or a suitable FFmpeg conversion workflow and test the output.
The video is still too large or the wrong resolution
The extension shortcut does not change either property. Export or re-encode a new copy with the output size or resolution you need.

The file plays on your Mac but not in the target app
Local playback does not establish compatibility with another app or website. Check the target’s requirements and whether its issue is the container, a stream codec or a track. A remux helps only when the existing streams are acceptable; otherwise, re-encoding may be required.
QuickTime Player does not offer MP4 export
This matches Apple’s documented QuickTime Player export limitation. Use iMovie to create a converted output copy.
