If your YouTube radio livestream keeps “disconnecting from the audio source,” first find out whether the audio input is disappearing inside your encoder, the audio alone is going silent, or the entire broadcast is disconnecting. Watch the encoder’s audio meter and make a local recording while the problem occurs: if audio fails there too, check the source and its routing; if local audio stays healthy but the published stream drops, investigate the connection from your encoder to YouTube.
First identify what is disconnecting
“Audio source” can describe an input device selected in your encoder, the audio feed reaching the broadcast, or the stream connection itself. Those failures can sound similar to a viewer but call for different fixes.

YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking how the stream looks and sounds in the encoder, the local archive, encoder errors, CPU load, and the routed audio and video sources. If the encoder output is healthy, focus next on the outbound connection. OBS likewise describes intermittent disconnections and dropped frames as instability between the computer and the remote ingest server (OBS connection troubleshooting).
If the audio source disappears inside the encoder
Confirm the intended input is selected
In OBS, check the audio meter while the stream is running. Confirm that the intended input or output device is selected in the active scene or in global audio settings. If the meter does not move, the stream connection is not the first problem to solve: the encoder is not receiving the audio as expected.

For a scene-level Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source, check that the same device is not also enabled in Settings → Audio. OBS warns that capturing a device in both places can create duplicate audio and echo; disable the duplicate global device if you are using the scene-level source. Check whether the operating system still sees the device
If an external interface, mixer, or other hardware source is involved, note its exact device name, operating system, and connection type. Check whether it remains available in the operating system’s sound settings when the failure happens. If the operating system also loses it, investigate the device connection or hardware; if the operating system still sees it but OBS does not, focus on OBS’s selected source and routing. The symptom alone does not establish that the hardware needs replacing.

OBS documents Audio Input/Output Capture on Windows and macOS; its audio-source guidance directs Linux users to ALSA or PulseAudio sources. Use the source type appropriate to your system rather than assuming the same capture option applies on every platform.
If audio alone goes silent while the stream stays live
Compare three things at the same time: the encoder’s audio meter, a local recording, and the sound of the YouTube broadcast. If the meter and local file both lose audio, troubleshoot source selection, routing, or the device itself. If both remain audible but viewers hear silence, inspect the encoder’s audio output and stream status, then note any errors shown in YouTube Live Control Room. This comparison helps establish whether the fault occurs before transmission or farther along the publishing path.

If the whole stream disconnects but local audio continues
Use logs and dropped-frame status to investigate transport
Check the encoder’s connection log and dropped-frame status at the time of the interruption. In OBS, dropped frames and intermittent disconnections indicate an unstable connection to the remote ingest server, not necessarily a failed audio device. You can test a lower video bitrate against your stable upload capacity and the streaming service’s limits. OBS’s connection guide offers 75% of your total upload speed as a starting point; it is a heuristic, not a guaranteed setting or a universal YouTube specification. A connection’s stability matters as well as its advertised speed.
If your encoder offers another ingest server, try it and compare whether the problem changes. Testing another streaming service can also help distinguish a service-specific issue from a problem along your connection path; treat that only as a diagnostic comparison, not proof of a particular cause.

Test the network path safely
- Wi-Fi: If the problem appears to be network instability, test a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired networking for streaming stability. A cable will not fix an audio input that has vanished from the encoder.
- VPN or security software: Check whether a VPN, firewall, antivirus program, or network-prioritization utility coincides with the drops. If you temporarily test with security software disabled, restore protection immediately afterward. If testing confirms it is the cause, add an appropriate OBS exception rather than leaving protection off.
- Drivers: Check for current network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.
- Router, modem, and other equipment: Restarting the modem or router can help identify a general connectivity problem. Consider replacing a router, modem, cable, network card, switch, or extender only after tests point to that component. If you are unsure, OBS advises consulting your ISP before replacing equipment.
OBS also documents Windows-only options for network optimization/TCP pacing and dynamic bitrate. Dynamic bitrate may reduce dropped frames by lowering quality as conditions change, but OBS warns that it does not fix the underlying network problem.

A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it; YouTube Help describes keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its live stream settings guide. YouTube recommends getting a new key and updating the encoder for a specific third-party encoder startup error. Rotating the key is not a general fix for a missing audio input, silence caused by capture routing, or intermittent network instability.

What to send your ISP or YouTube support
If the audio meter and local recording remain healthy but the stream still disconnects after you check the local network, gather evidence before escalating. OBS recommends contacting your ISP if the network path or equipment remains uncertain; YouTube also directs creators to report persistent live-stream issues.
- The date and time of each interruption.
- Your encoder logs and dropped-frame information.
- The bitrate in use and whether it changes during the problem.
- Whether you were on Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet.
- Whether the local recording stayed audible and whether the issue reproduced on another network.
