To diagnose a YouTube stream that keeps disconnecting from a Kolkata VPS, line up timestamped FFmpeg stderr with YouTube Live Control Room health messages, then check the media and encoder, the VPS’s outbound capacity, and the ingest settings—in that order. An FFmpeg “reconnect” message records a transport event; by itself, it does not tell you what caused the drop or whether YouTube received a healthy stream again. A Kolkata location alone is not evidence of a Kolkata-specific routing fault.
What to collect before changing anything
Capture one incident from both ends: what FFmpeg reported and what YouTube reported. Keep the complete command line, but redact the stream key anywhere you save or share it. Record the event time in UTC so you can compare the logs with YouTube’s timestamped errors and health status.
- The complete FFmpeg stderr output around the drop, plus the UTC time it occurred.
- The FFmpeg version and build configuration. Run
ffmpeg -versionon the VPS and retain the output. - The command line with the stream key replaced by a marker such as
[REDACTED]; note the input and output protocols. - Whether FFmpeg exited, attempted to reconnect, stayed running, or continued producing output after the event.
- The corresponding Live Control Room health message or error text and its timestamp.
- Any local archive or encoder preview, encoder errors, CPU load, configured video and audio bitrates, and measurements of usable outbound capacity from that same VPS.
Do not post a stream key in a support ticket, screenshot, public log, or diagnostic command copied into a public forum. If a key has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Live Control Room before using it again.
Separate an attempt from a recovery
A reconnect message may show only that the client tried to connect again. It does not prove the connection completed, that packets continued flowing, or that YouTube considered the ingest healthy. Look for evidence of each stage in FFmpeg’s subsequent output and YouTube’s health status rather than treating a running FFmpeg process as proof that the broadcast recovered.

Read FFmpeg reconnect logs in context
First identify both ends of the FFmpeg command: the input protocol and the publishing output protocol. Options apply to protocols and operations, not to the broad idea of “the stream.” In particular, FFmpeg documents the reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed, and related options under its HTTP protocol options. They are not general-purpose RTMP publishing reconnection switches.
For example, FFmpeg’s HTTP documentation defines reconnect as: “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit.” That description concerns HTTP. It does not establish that adding the option will reconnect an RTMP or RTMPS output to YouTube.
Check what the installed build actually supports
Use the version and build output from the VPS, then inspect the relevant command help and protocol documentation for that build before changing flags. FFmpeg protocol support can be enabled or disabled when it is built, so a flag available in one installation may not be available in another. If you are unsure which protocol an option belongs to, do not apply it to the publishing output by analogy.
The generic rw_timeout option is specified in microseconds for network read/write operations. It changes how long an operation waits; it is not a reconnect mechanism and cannot make an undersized or unstable outbound link sufficient for the configured bitrate.

Capture stderr without publishing secrets
For a shell-launched job, redirect stderr to a protected log file, for example by appending 2>ffmpeg-stderr.log to the command. Keep the file access-restricted because logs and command output can contain sensitive information. Preserve the exact command privately, but redact the stream key from any copy shared with a provider or YouTube support.
Work through the likely causes in order
| Possible cause | Evidence to inspect | What the evidence helps distinguish |
|---|---|---|
| Input or media problem | FFmpeg input errors, local archive, audio and video appearance | Whether the media itself is degrading or stopping before it reaches YouTube. |
| Encoder or resource problem | Encoder errors and CPU load at the event time | Whether encoding falters at the same time as the apparent drop. |
| Output or protocol configuration | Redacted command, input/output protocols, installed build, stderr | Whether the selected options apply to the actual protocol and direction. |
| VPS outbound network | Measurements from the sending VPS, stream bitrate, available headroom, correlated timestamps | Whether the host’s sustained egress capacity or connection is interrupted. |
| YouTube ingest or format configuration | Live Control Room status and errors, encoder settings, stream format | Whether YouTube reports an ingest or format problem while the local output appears healthy. |
These categories can overlap. A network interruption can expose weak retry behavior, for example, while a format problem can exist alongside a network issue.
1. Rule out the source, media, and encoder
Inspect the stream in the encoder and compare it with a local archive if one is available. Check whether audio and video remain intact, whether the archive continues to grow, and whether encoder errors or high CPU load coincide with the failure. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder output, errors, CPU load, and local archive before moving on to the outbound connection.
If the archive or encoder preview is already faulty, investigate the input, timestamps, encoding load, and media settings first. A broken local output cannot be repaired by changing the VPS route or by adding retries.

2. Measure the network from the actual VPS
A speed test from a home connection or laptop says nothing reliable about the egress path from the Kolkata VPS. Run representative outbound capacity and reliability checks from the server that sends the stream, and record their times alongside FFmpeg drops, host load, and any provider/network events. Repeat measurements; a single peak result does not establish sustained capacity or rule out an intermittent fault.
YouTube’s streaming tips say total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommend leaving 20% headroom. Shared network traffic can consume some of that capacity. If a stream is close to the measured ceiling, reduce its bitrate or other demand before concluding that reconnect behavior is the main issue.
3. Compare configured bitrate with available headroom
Record the configured video and audio bitrates, then compare their total with usable, sustained upload capacity measured from the VPS. YouTube’s encoder page gives codec-, resolution-, and frame-rate-dependent recommendations. For H.264, it lists 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps; these are YouTube Help recommendations, not measurements of your VPS or guarantees that a stream will be stable. The page does not establish which bitrate a particular server can sustain.
If the configured total leaves less than YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom against measured capacity, lower the demand and observe whether the drops stop. If adequate headroom exists, continue checking the time-correlated network and ingest evidence rather than assuming bandwidth is the cause.

4. Read YouTube’s ingest evidence against the same timeline
Open the matching broadcast in Live Control Room and compare its health messages with the UTC timeline from FFmpeg. YouTube says Live Control Room reports stream health and status messages, and its live-stream error guide describes error messages and corrective guidance. Error timestamps help distinguish an ingest warning at the same moment as a transport event from a message that appeared earlier or later.
Verify the protocol and format against YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance. It covers RTMP/RTMPS, codecs, frame rates, keyframe timing, and bitrate recommendations. Treat a format warning as evidence to investigate the relevant settings; do not assume every disconnect is a codec problem. YouTube advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”

Media or encoder evidence fails at the same time
If FFmpeg reports input or encoding trouble, the local archive stops growing, audio/video breaks locally, or CPU load and encoder errors coincide with the drop, work on the source and encoder first. The network path is not the first suspect when the produced media is already failing before upload.
Healthy local output, but outbound trouble is time-correlated
If the encoder output and archive remain healthy, bitrate is below measured sustained capacity with appropriate headroom, and the same timestamps show outbound connection trouble, escalate to the VPS/network provider. Include UTC times, relevant host metrics, capacity measurements, and route or destination evidence gathered using the provider’s accepted diagnostic procedures. YouTube’s general guidance recommends contacting the internet service provider when connection problems are found; for a hosted server, the relevant operator is the VPS or network provider.

Healthy local output and apparently stable outbound path, but YouTube reports an error
Use the exact Live Control Room message to check the stream key, selected ingest protocol, format, and encoder settings. A running FFmpeg process and a stable-looking network do not rule out an ingest configuration problem. Equally, the error text should guide the investigation; it does not by itself prove a YouTube incident or a provider fault.
Nothing identifies a Kolkata-specific route fault
The city name is not enough to attribute drops to local routing. Without the VPS provider and plan, actual route or endpoint evidence, incident timestamps, and measurements from that host, there is no basis to claim that Kolkata is the cause. The same timestamped diagnostic process applies to any VPS location.
Escalate with a useful incident packet
Once you have a repeatable failure window, send the party best positioned to investigate only the evidence relevant to it. Protect the stream key and provide timestamps in UTC.
- For the VPS provider: drop times, host load, measurements taken from the VPS, configured bitrate, capacity headroom, and route/destination details gathered under the provider’s diagnostic rules.
- For a YouTube ingest or format issue: the exact Live Control Room health/error message and timestamp, protocol and format settings, and a redacted FFmpeg log excerpt.
- For an encoder or media issue: the relevant stderr, encoder errors, CPU observations, and whether the local archive or preview shows the same defect.
A title, city, or isolated “reconnect” line is not enough to assign responsibility. The strongest escalation is one where independent observations line up in time and point to the same part of the chain.

Copyright and repeat-content checks for prerecorded streams
If the stream loops prerecorded video, make sure you have the rights needed for both the footage and audio, and review YouTube’s current rules for live content and monetization before broadcasting. A stream that connects successfully can still create a separate copyright or channel-policy problem. Reconnecting the stream, changing the VPS, or automating playback does not establish permission to use its content. Keep a record of licenses or permissions for material you did not create; the free copyright safety checklist can help organize that review.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on YouTube without maintaining FFmpeg on a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and is for YouTube only.
- Your home computer and connection do not have to stay on; the loop runs in the cloud.
- Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month; other billing periods are available, and you can cancel any time.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Five or more slots: contact support.
