For a sequence of local cartoon files, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with a formal ffconcat list, then add -stream_loop -1 to repeat that input indefinitely. The list decides which files play and in what order; it does not decide how FFmpeg sends the broadcast to YouTube. Choose and configure the ingest protocol separately.
Use a formal ffconcat list for sequential local files
Create a plain-text file named cartoons.ffconcat. Put the exact header on the first line, followed by one file directive for each episode in playback order:

file 'cartoon-episode-03.mp4'Save the list where FFmpeg can resolve the relative file paths. The concat demuxer’s formal header and file-entry syntax are documented in the FFmpeg Formats documentation.
Repeat the playlist indefinitely
Use the list as an input and place -stream_loop -1 before that input:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -i cartoons.ffconcat ...Here, -stream_loop -1 requests infinite looping of the input, and -re reads it at its native rate rather than as fast as possible. The ellipsis is intentional: this is an input sketch, not a complete YouTube command. Output mapping, encoding, frame rate, keyframe cadence, audio handling, and the RTMP or HLS destination depend on your files, FFmpeg build, and YouTube stream configuration. The option’s behavior is described in the FFmpeg documentation for advanced options.
Check the files and paths before going live
Keep paths safe and resolvable
The concat demuxer enables its safe behavior by default. It rejects unsafe paths and directives; expected paths are relative and use a portable character set. Keep the playlist and media in a predictable directory structure and use simple relative filenames where possible. The FFmpeg documentation also shows absolute filenames separately, but do not disable safety for a playlist you do not trust.

Verify the media streams are compatible
Concat demuxing expects the input files to be suitable for concatenation. Check that the episodes’ streams, time bases, codecs, and relevant parameters are compatible before relying on the sequence. The syntax alone does not establish that a particular cartoon library will concatenate cleanly, nor does it guarantee seamless transitions between mismatched files. Test the intended files and inspect playback around each boundary before scheduling a long broadcast.
Do not confuse the playlist format with YouTube ingest
ffconcat is a local input list. RTMP and HLS are network-delivery choices. An .m3u8 file may instead be an HLS playlist pointing to media segments; it is not a drop-in alternative for listing local MP4 episodes in this workflow. FFmpeg’s HLS muxer documentation describes creating an HLS playlist and segment files.

RTMP is the ordinary starting point
For a typical cartoon stream, decide the output protocol based on your encoder and YouTube stream setup rather than changing the local playlist format. The concat list only establishes the ordered inputs; it does not configure a valid YouTube broadcast by itself.
Use HLS only when its capabilities or codec support are needed
YouTube positions HLS as useful for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support, and notes that HLS has higher latency because video is sent in segments instead of a continuous RTMP stream. YouTube’s HLS live requirements include TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no byte ranges. Listed video codecs are H.264 and HEVC; listed audio codecs are AAC, AC3, and EAC3. Review YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements and validate that your generated live output meets them. A generic VOD .m3u8 setup does not establish compliance.

When a different workflow may make sense
- Choose ffconcat when you want FFmpeg to read a straightforward sequence of local files and the library’s contents or order may need to remain easy to edit.
- Consider a pre-rendered combined file if you prefer a single prepared asset, but weigh that against the need to rebuild it when the source episodes or order change.
- Test either approach on the actual library. Whether concatenation, transitions, or a prepared file performs better depends on the media and system; no universal performance or reliability advantage follows from the playlist syntax.
What infinite looping does—and does not—guarantee
-stream_loop -1 repeats the input at FFmpeg’s level. It is not a process supervisor: it will not restart FFmpeg after a crash, restore a failed internet connection, or guarantee that YouTube keeps the broadcast open. A 24/7 setup also needs a plan for monitoring and recovery outside the playlist option itself.
