Can an Internet Radio Station Stream to YouTube With a Single Image?

An internet radio station can stream audio to YouTube Live with a still image through an encoder. Here are the eligibility, licensing, setup, and settings checks.

Yes. An internet radio station can send its audio feed to YouTube Live while displaying one still image, using an encoder to combine the audio and a video source. YouTube documents encoder-based streaming generally, but does not publish a special preset or endorsement for this exact radio-and-still-image setup. You will need an eligible YouTube channel, an encoder, a stable audio feed, an image, and permission to stream the music in the relevant territories.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take time. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • An encoder. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that prepares a feed for streaming. It receives the station audio and the image/video source, then sends the stream to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup page lists OBS as one example of an encoder that supports HLS; that mention is an example, not a product endorsement. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  • A still image and the station’s audio feed. Set the image as the encoder’s video source and route the station output as its audio source. This is a practical use of YouTube’s general encoder workflow, not a configuration specifically validated by YouTube.
  • A connection with upload capacity for the stream. YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth at least 20% above the total stream bitrate. Leave that headroom for fluctuations rather than running at the connection’s limit. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Check music rights and channel access first

Confirm that your licenses cover YouTube

YouTube’s livestream terms require the broadcaster to have all necessary rights to use the live content on Google services, including music rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants, and to comply with applicable local legal and licensing requirements. Check that your permissions cover the music you play, YouTube as a platform, the territories where viewers may access it, and live-stream use. Do not assume that a license for broadcast radio or internet radio automatically covers a YouTube livestream. The requirements vary by territory; YouTube’s general guidance does not determine the licensing obligations for a particular station. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

Verify that live streaming is enabled

Before configuring an encoder, confirm the channel is verified, live streaming is available, and the channel has no applicable restriction. The stream must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube does not guarantee uninterrupted or permanent 24/7 simulcasting, and its cited guidance does not set a still-image-specific continuous-stream limit.

Set up the encoder and start the stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. Follow the prompts to obtain the stream key. The key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it publicly. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating the stream and connecting an encoder.
  2. Choose the audio input. If the station feed already reaches the encoder computer digitally, select that input. If the audio comes from external physical equipment, you may need an audio interface to bring that signal into the encoder. An interface is optional and depends on the signal path; it is not inherently required for a still-image stream.
  3. Add the still image as the video source. Select an image and check that it fills the intended frame without unwanted cropping, borders, or distortion. Configure the encoder so the image remains visible while the station audio plays. YouTube’s general documentation does not prescribe a special still-image radio preset.
  4. Enter the stream key in the encoder and select a YouTube-supported streaming profile. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. It supports frame rates up to 60 fps. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 128 Kbps; 384 Kbps is listed for 5.1 audio. These are platform settings, not a requirement to use a particular resolution for radio. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  5. Preview before going live. Start sending the encoder signal, check the Live Control Room preview, and confirm the image, audio level, and stream health. Test privately or unlisted if that suits your workflow and channel settings. YouTube advises checking the preview and monitoring stream health.
  6. Go live and keep monitoring. Watch for audio dropouts, encoder warnings, or connection instability. For a long-running broadcast, make a plan for monitoring and recovery: the cited YouTube guidance does not promise that a stream will remain uninterrupted indefinitely.

Choose settings that fit a radio stream

A radio stream still needs a video signal for YouTube, but the picture can be a static image. Choose a supported video profile that your encoder and upload connection can sustain; the still image does not require a high frame rate for its own sake. Prioritize clean, stable audio, and test the actual result in YouTube’s preview and playback. YouTube’s published encoder guidance specifies supported codecs and audio recommendations, but does not prescribe a single resolution or video bitrate for every station.

Local encoder or cloud playback?

A local software or hardware encoder can work when the station can reliably supply audio, keep the encoder operating, and maintain the internet connection. A cloud workflow is another option when the goal is to keep an uploaded recording or playlist playing on YouTube without leaving a station computer running. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos; it does not take a live camera feed or replace a station’s live audio input. For a radio simulcast, make sure the material you upload and stream is appropriate for that workflow and that you hold the necessary rights.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the uploaded video looping, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, and the Monthly option is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
