First find out whether FFmpeg is failing to encode in real time or whether the VPS cannot deliver the stream steadily. Watch FFmpeg’s reported speed, compare the stream’s total bitrate with measured outbound bandwidth, and check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. Then change one factor at a time and repeat a representative test.
Identify where frames are being lost
“Dropped frames” describes a symptom, not a diagnosis. The encoder, the network path from the VPS to YouTube, or a transient output failure can each be involved. YouTube’s stream-health display can help identify ingest problems, but a YouTube-side dropped-frame indication does not by itself prove that FFmpeg skipped frames. Compare the YouTube report with FFmpeg’s own progress output before changing settings. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health during the event.
FFmpeg is falling behind
For a real-time job, inspect FFmpeg’s progress output, especially speed and fps. If speed remains below 1x, FFmpeg is processing more slowly than the output timeline and is falling behind. This is a diagnostic clue, not a universal dropped-frame counter. CPU limits, demanding filters, resolution or frame rate, and encoder settings can all contribute; the progress line alone does not identify which one is responsible. FFmpeg documents its progress reporting.
The stream is not reaching YouTube steadily
When FFmpeg keeps up, compare the configured total stream bitrate with measured outbound capacity from the VPS and network path. A download speed test does not establish that upload capacity is sufficient. YouTube says outbound capacity must exceed the total stream bitrate and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages as well as the VPS’s measured upload.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reduce dropped frames in a diagnostic order
- Capture a baseline. Save the full FFmpeg command, FFmpeg version and build, input type, target resolution and frame rate, codec, configured bitrate, and a sample of progress output and logs. Note whether
speedstays near real time and record the stream-health messages YouTube shows. Without these details, a specific cause cannot be determined. - If FFmpeg runs below real time, reduce encoding work. If acceptable for your content, lower output resolution or frame rate, simplify filters, or select a faster encoder preset. You can try a hardware encoder only if the VPS and its FFmpeg build actually expose one. Change one variable at a time and see whether the job sustains real-time speed. There is no universally correct preset or VPS size: performance depends on the actual workload and available resources.
- If FFmpeg keeps up, check upload capacity. Measure outbound bandwidth from the VPS or its network path, not just download speed. Compare available upload with the total configured stream bitrate and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% room. If the connection cannot sustain that margin, reduce the video bitrate or, if necessary, resolution or frame rate.
- Match YouTube’s ingest recommendations. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s current guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and keyframes every two seconds, and says not to exceed four seconds. For H.264, its current table gives the following minimum and recommended bitrates. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or upload at those rates. Consult YouTube’s current encoder table for other codecs and output modes; do not apply H.264 figures to AV1 or H.265.
- Separate transient outages from steady-state limits. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can be configured to attempt recovery after output failure. It can also drop packets if its queue overflows; that is intentional loss, not a way to preserve every frame. Reconnect and buffering behavior may help with temporary network interruptions, but cannot make sustained CPU or bandwidth capacity adequate. See FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation.
- Repeat a representative test. Use the actual scene complexity, motion, audio, filters, and destination settings. Monitor FFmpeg progress and YouTube stream health together so you can tell whether a change improved encoding speed, delivery, or both.
YouTube H.264 bitrate reference
YouTube’s Live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these H.264 figures. They are platform recommendations, not measured performance thresholds for your VPS.
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube also recommends 20% additional outbound bandwidth beyond the total stream bitrate. Include all streams’ audio and video bitrate when calculating the total. Its current guidance recommends CBR for RTMP/RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds); it recommends RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP. These settings do not replace checking the capacity of your VPS and network. See the current YouTube Live encoder guidance.

Common troubleshooting outcomes
- FFmpeg’s speed stays below 1x: Treat this as an encoding workload problem first. Reduce one source of work—such as resolution, frame rate, or filter complexity—or test a faster preset, then check whether speed sustains real time.
- FFmpeg stays near real time, but YouTube reports stream-health problems: Measure VPS outbound capacity and compare it with total configured bitrate plus headroom. Confirm the ingest settings match YouTube’s guidance for the chosen codec.
- A brief output interruption triggers trouble: Review FFmpeg’s output and recovery behavior. FIFO recovery may address transient failures; packet drops on queue overflow are a trade-off and do not solve a continuously inadequate connection.
- The figures seem adequate, but the stream still drops frames: Repeat a representative test and examine FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream health together. A download test, a short low-motion clip, or a single bitrate number cannot rule out upload variation, demanding content, or a different stage failing.
