There is no fixed storage requirement for a 24/7 prerecorded children’s YouTube channel. If you repeat a finite playlist, you need room for that playlist—not a year of unique video. Storage grows with the hours of distinct source footage you keep and its combined video-and-audio bitrate.
Estimate storage from unique content, not broadcast hours
A channel can broadcast continuously by replaying a short library. A one-hour playlist remains about one hour of source files even if it plays around the clock. By contrast, a channel that keeps 24 new hours of programming each day needs storage for all those distinct files, plus any separate archives or backups it retains.
YouTube’s live-ingestion guide describes media being delivered to YouTube in segments; that transmission process does not mean a broadcaster must keep a year of unique footage locally when it is repeating a finite playlist. YouTube Live DASH ingestion guide.
Use this formula for a planning estimate
Decimal storage in GB ≈ combined bitrate in Mbps × unique duration in hours × 0.45.

The estimate converts megabits per second over time into decimal gigabytes. Divide the result by 1,000 for decimal TB. It excludes filesystem overhead, project files, alternate exports and extra copies, so the sum of your actual video files is a better final estimate when you have them.
Illustrative sizes using YouTube’s SDR upload recommendations
YouTube recommends MP4 with H.264 video, lists SDR video bitrates by resolution and frame rate, and recommends 384 kbps for stereo audio. The figures below add that audio bitrate to each video recommendation. They are arithmetic estimates—not a YouTube storage requirement or a promise that every file at that resolution will have that size. YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

For example, a one-hour playlist encoded at the 1080p standard-frame-rate planning bitrate is about 3.8 GB. A daily playlist containing 24 unique hours is about 90.5 GB. The year figure applies only if you retain 8,760 hours of distinct programming.
Choose the right model for your channel
Finite library that loops
Add the runtimes and file sizes of the distinct videos in rotation. Include space for new episodes you plan to add, edited versions, project assets and any independent backup copies. If a one-hour library is duplicated as a backup, budget for both copies.

Unique programming retained day after day
Estimate the unique broadcast hours you keep per day, multiply by the number of days in your retention period, then apply the combined bitrate formula. At the 1080p standard-frame-rate example above, a full year of unique programming is about 33.1 decimal TB before overhead and extra copies.
Playlist plus broadcast archives
Count the source library and the archive as separate storage needs if you keep both. The source playlist may be reused indefinitely, while retained recordings of each day’s output accumulate according to your archive policy.

Make the estimate match your actual files
- Decide what you are retaining. Specify whether the total covers only the rotating source library, daily archives, backups, or all of them.
- Use actual file sizes where possible. Sum the files in the rotation and the files in any separate archive. Variable-bitrate encodes can differ substantially from a planning figure based on resolution alone.
- If files are not ready, calculate from bitrate and runtime. Add video and audio bitrates, then multiply by the number of unique hours. For decimal TB, divide the GB estimate by 1,000.
- Allow for copies and growth. Add capacity for independent backups, alternate exports, project files and future additions. RAID or another redundancy arrangement is not itself a backup unless it provides a separate recoverable copy.
YouTube’s guidance says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” The recommended rates are useful for planning, but your exported files determine their actual sizes. If you use HDR, a different audio format, mono or 5.1 sound, a different frame rate, or other encoder settings, use the actual combined bitrate rather than the SDR stereo examples. YouTube lists 5.1 audio at 512 kbps and higher SDR rates for HDR on its upload encoding recommendations.

Seagate lists an 8TB Expansion Desktop model on its Expansion Desktop product page. At the 1080p standard-frame-rate example rate, 8TB corresponds to roughly 2,100 hours of encoded files before overhead, backup copies and other uses. That is an illustrative calculation, not a universal recommendation: check your actual file sizes and usable capacity, and decide whether that drive must also hold archives or backups.
