YouTube says an encoder-based live stream ends when the encoder stops sending content. If only a child’s viewer playlist stops, enable Loop in the YouTube player instead.
First, identify what stopped
There are two different kinds of playback here, and they have different fixes:
- The viewer’s playlist stopped: The channel’s livestream may still be live, but the playlist playing in YouTube has reached its end. Use the player’s playlist repeat control.
- The livestream went offline: Check whether the source application stopped playback at the end of its list and whether the encoder stopped sending content. A viewer’s Loop control does not restart the creator’s broadcast.
After the last item, check Live Control Room: does the event still show as live? That helps distinguish a viewer playback issue from a broadcast that ended.
If only the viewer’s playlist stopped
YouTube’s playlist Loop control repeats playback for the viewer. It does not keep a separate encoder-fed livestream running.

- Desktop: Open a video from the playlist, expand the playlist panel, and click Loop.
- Mobile: Play the playlist and tap Loop in the playlist control box.
- TV or game console: Select Repeat until the control displays Repeat • Playlist.
These steps apply to ordinary playlist playback in the YouTube player, not to restarting a channel’s live broadcast. YouTube Help: Loop videos or playlists.
If the livestream itself ends at the last item
YouTube’s encoder setup uses a Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube Help explains: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” If the broadcast ends at playlist completion, trace whether content stopped at the source or whether the encoder stopped transmitting. - Check the source application’s end-of-playlist behavior. Look for a repeat, loop, or restart option, if the application offers one. Confirm that reaching the end does not close the source, stop playback, or trigger an action that stops the encoder. Menu names and available controls depend on the application; YouTube does not provide one universal “24/7 playlist loop” switch for third-party sources.
- Check whether the encoder is still sending. If the source appears to continue but the live event ends, inspect the encoder’s status and confirm it is still transmitting to YouTube with the intended Live server URL and stream key.
- Check Live Control Room and the viewing endpoints. Preview the stream in Live Control Room, then check whether the live event is available from the channel or watch page and on mobile. Monitor both audio and video, and ask whether the event still appears live after the last playlist item.
- Check the local recording, if you are making one. YouTube recommends checking that the archive file is growing. A growing file is one useful check on local recording; it does not by itself establish that the YouTube broadcast is still live.
YouTube’s guidance recommends these preview, access, audio/video, and archive checks, and also recommends testing encoder failover. They help narrow down whether playback stopped at the source, transmission stopped at the encoder, or the event is not accessible where expected. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream issues.
Do kids’ settings explain the shutdown?
Not on the evidence in YouTube’s published guidance: it lists feature restrictions for streams set as made for kids, but does not identify playlist completion as a reason a livestream ends. For made-for-kids content, YouTube lists restrictions including disabled live chat and reminder notifications; personalized ads are disabled on live streams and Premieres, although contextual ads may appear. Those audience-setting effects are separate from whether the source continues feeding the encoder. YouTube Help: Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.

Will YouTube archive a 24/7 livestream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is an archive limitation, not a stated maximum live-transmission duration and not proof that a stream must end at 12 hours. If preserving a complete replay matters, keep a local recording and check its file growth during the broadcast. YouTube Help: Create a live stream on mobile.
