For one 24/7 YouTube Live stream, plan for about 10 Mbps of stable upload at 720p, 18 Mbps at 1080p30, or 22 Mbps at 1080p60. These are practical targets based on YouTube’s recommended H.264 live bitrates with room for network variation—not guarantees. The stream’s resolution, frame rate, and encoder bitrate set the requirement; the fact that the video is prerecorded or runs around the clock does not multiply the Mbps needed.
Upload targets by stream quality
YouTube’s live-stream guidance recommends these H.264 bitrates. The upload targets below add roughly 20% headroom, rounded conservatively. YouTube says to “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended),” but does not prescribe a single calculation formula, so treat the targets as planning figures rather than exact thresholds.

The recommended encoder bitrates come from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265 ranges; the figures here are specifically an H.264 planning baseline, not a universal bitrate for every codec or quality setting.
Is 10 Mbps upload enough?
It can be a reasonable target for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps if that upload capacity is actually available to the encoder and remains steady. It is not a safe general answer for 1080p: plan around 18 Mbps for 1080p30 or 22 Mbps for 1080p60.

Choose the encoder bitrate first
Check the planned resolution, frame rate, codec, and outgoing bitrate in the encoder or streaming service. The broadband connection must sustain the stream’s outgoing bitrate, with additional capacity available for fluctuation and other network use. YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations are starting points; your exact encoder settings determine the stream’s demand.
Measure usable upload, not download speed
A plan’s advertised speed or a high download result does not establish how much upload is available to your stream. YouTube notes that inbound/download speed is often higher than outbound/upload speed and recommends testing upload bitrate. Its streaming tips also explain that bandwidth shared with other people or devices can reduce what the encoder can use.

- Test the connection where the encoder will run. Use the same location and connection arrangement planned for the broadcast.
- Test at a representative busy time. Include typical household or workplace network use rather than relying only on an unusually quiet test.
- Run a test stream with representative audio and movement. YouTube recommends testing under realistic conditions; a static or silent clip may not reveal issues that appear during the actual program.
- Watch stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Pay attention to health messages and bitrate stability while the test is running. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing and monitoring stream health.
A speed test is a snapshot, not a promise that the same capacity will remain available all day. Congestion, other users, and connectivity interruptions can affect a continuous feed. A wired connection may be practical for reducing reliance on Wi-Fi, but no cable can increase the upload capacity supplied by the internet connection.
Does prerecorded video need less upload speed?
Not while it is being sent as a live stream. A prerecorded video played into a live encoder still has an outgoing live bitrate, and that bitrate is what the connection needs to carry to YouTube. A 24/7 schedule does not mean multiplying the Mbps target by 24: Mbps is a rate, not a daily data total. What a continuous schedule changes is the importance of stability, power, encoder uptime, monitoring, and a recovery plan.

Live streaming and uploading a video file are different
Do not use YouTube’s file-upload encoding recommendations to size broadband for a live broadcast. For example, YouTube’s separate video upload settings include an 8 Mbps recommendation for 1080p standard-frame-rate SDR files. That is an encoding recommendation for a video file, not the live ingest bitrate or broadband upload target for a 1080p live stream.
What affects the target on a 24/7 stream?
- Resolution and frame rate: higher live output settings generally require a higher encoder bitrate; use the relevant row above as an H.264 baseline.
- Codec and selected quality: YouTube’s published guidance varies by codec and settings. Confirm the bitrate configured for the actual encoder rather than assuming the H.264 figures apply unchanged to AV1 or H.265.
- Other network use: uploads, cloud backups, other streams, and household or workplace traffic compete for available upstream capacity.
- Variation and interruptions: a connection may briefly deliver less than its nominal or tested rate. Headroom helps, but cannot guarantee uninterrupted streaming if connectivity is lost.
- Multiple destinations: if sending the same program to more than one platform, total outgoing bitrate and headroom requirements differ from a single YouTube destination. See YouTube’s separate guidance for streaming across platforms.
Run the prerecorded stream without keeping a computer on
If your do-it-yourself setup uses a computer or encoder at home, it still needs a stable connection that can sustain the chosen live bitrate, plus power and a plan for monitoring and recovery.
