Yes—if the NAS can run a compatible encoder continuously and has enough processing capacity and upload bandwidth for the chosen stream. The NAS must send a live feed to YouTube; simply storing videos on a network drive does not broadcast them. You can self-host the encoder on a suitable NAS, or use a cloud service such as StreamNeo to keep prerecorded videos streaming without leaving your NAS or computer running.
How a NAS-based YouTube livestream works
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. In a NAS setup, the NAS stores the authorized video files and runs the encoder process that sends the live feed to YouTube.
- Store the media: Keep the prerecorded video and audio files on NAS storage.
- Run an encoder: Install or run encoder software that the NAS model and operating system support. A container runtime may be one option on supported devices.
- Configure playback and output: Set the encoder to loop or sequence the media, then configure its output for YouTube. Check the specific encoder’s looping and restart behavior; no particular command or encoder configuration is established here.
- Connect the YouTube event: Create or schedule a live event and enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder.
- Preview and monitor: Check the event preview, audio, video, network stability and encoder process before relying on it unattended.
YouTube Help’s encoder guidance describes this workflow. A NAS that only serves files to other devices is not automatically an encoder.
Check NAS compatibility before building around it
NAS capabilities differ by model, operating system and release. For example, Synology’s Container Manager package page lists supported models for DSM 7.4; that does not establish support on every Synology NAS, nor does container availability prove that a device can encode your chosen video smoothly.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Confirm the exact NAS model and operating-system version support the software or container runtime you plan to use.
- Check whether the encoder supports the source codecs and the output format and resolution you want.
- Verify that the NAS has enough CPU or supported hardware-encoding capacity to maintain the workload.
- Plan how the encoder will restart after a crash or NAS reboot, and how you will know if it stops.
- Account for continuous power use, home-network availability, router and ISP interruptions, and maintenance.
These are compatibility checks, not a claim that a particular NAS has been tested for 24/7 streaming. See Synology’s Container Manager package listing for its model-specific information.
YouTube eligibility and stream settings
Enable live streaming and protect the key
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. Create or schedule an event, then supply the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event.

Choose compatible output settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure form of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 in supported configurations, but the selected encoder and resolution must support the codec you choose. For one specific reference point, YouTube recommends 4 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30; that is a recommendation for that resolution and frame rate, not a universal bitrate for every stream.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings guidance to check the settings for your intended resolution, frame rate and codec. Match the encoder output to the actual video and the capabilities of both the NAS and network rather than assuming a setting that works on one model will work on another.
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom over the stream bitrate and warns that network disruption can break a stream. A 4 Mbps video stream therefore needs more than 4 Mbps of sustained upload capacity; do not plan around an ISP’s theoretical maximum. YouTube’s streaming network guidance is the place to check its current recommendations.

Plan for an unattended stream—and its archive
A stream that works during a short test still needs a recovery plan for a crashed encoder, NAS update or reboot, power loss, router or ISP outage, or YouTube-side interruption. Test the full setup before launch, watch the YouTube preview and audio/video quality, and observe whether the connection remains stable. YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event and setting it up at least two hours in advance.
- Check that the encoder process starts automatically after a restart and resumes the intended media.
- Arrange a practical way to notice a stopped or unhealthy feed; an unattended process is not the same as a monitored one.
- Consider a UPS sized for the NAS and network equipment if short power interruptions are a concern. A UPS cannot prevent an ISP outage or a YouTube-side interruption.
- Keep the stream key private and rotate it if it is exposed.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one 24-hour event will be saved as a single video; plan the event and archive workflow accordingly. See YouTube’s encoder instructions and streaming tips.

Children’s content: audience settings, rights and monetization
If the content is made for kids, YouTube disables live chat, chat replay, comments on live archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may still be shown. These restrictions affect the ways viewers can interact and what advertising may be served.
Whether a particular repetitive or looped children’s program satisfies YouTube’s content, rights, originality or monetization policies depends on the actual material and its use. Make sure you have the rights to the video and audio, and review YouTube’s rules for your specific content. An encoder successfully sending a feed does not establish policy compliance or guarantee monetization. See YouTube’s made-for-kids guidance.
Compare the ways to keep the stream running
| Option | Main advantage | Main tradeoff | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo — cloud service | Runs the prerecorded YouTube stream in the cloud, so your NAS and computer do not have to stay on; any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps uses one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. | Depends on a third-party service and its current terms and availability. | Confirm your rights workflow, YouTube account eligibility and the service’s current plan terms. |
| NAS-hosted encoder | Uses local media and hardware, with the operator controlling the process. | Model compatibility, encoding load, home power and network reliability, and ongoing maintenance. | Exact model and runtime support, codec, CPU capacity, upload bandwidth, restarts and alerts. |
| Separate streaming computer or hardware encoder | Moves encoding away from storage duties and may simplify a dedicated setup. | Requires another device and configuration. | YouTube-compatible ingest, codec and resolution support, and suitability for continuous operation. |
YouTube’s encoder page also lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. That listing identifies an alternative category; it does not establish its current pricing, reliability or terms. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded video on YouTube, not camera broadcasts. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
