YouTube needs a video stream as well as audio for a conventional audiovisual live event, so pair your audio with a still image, visualizer, or looping video. Docker can restart a process that exits, but it does not guarantee that the stream stays healthy; test the full setup before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check enablement before troubleshooting the encoder: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- An audio source: for example, one finished radio-program file or a playlist of files.
- A video source: a still image, visualizer, looping video, or a pre-rendered audiovisual program.
- An FFmpeg build with the required input, encoder, and output-protocol support. The exact available codecs depend on the image or build you choose.
- A Docker host and an outbound internet connection with enough upload capacity for the total stream bitrate.
Use an unlisted or private test where available before scheduling a public broadcast. Confirm that the video and audio are present in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview.
Set up the YouTube live event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream or event you intend to broadcast.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy its server URL and matching stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted streaming option; use the RTMPS URL for the event when configuring an RTMPS-capable FFmpeg build. See YouTube’s encoder workflow and RTMPS guidance.
- Treat the key as a password. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not commit it to source control, include it in screenshots, or expose it in logs. If it leaks or stops working, reset it or create a fresh key in Live Control Room. More detail: manage live stream settings.
Choose the audio and video inputs
One pre-rendered audiovisual file
This is the simplest input arrangement when a finished file already contains the radio audio and its visual. Map the file’s video and audio streams explicitly if it has multiple tracks. If you want the whole program to repeat, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 loops that input indefinitely. The loop option must appear before the input it applies to. FFmpeg documents this and other command-line behavior at its command documentation.
Separate audio and visual files
For separate inputs, make sure the visual produces a continuous video stream and that the audio and video are mapped to the output. A still image needs to be made into a video stream at the chosen frame rate; a visualizer or looping video needs its own compatible input and duration behavior. Use explicit -map options so that FFmpeg selects the intended streams rather than relying on automatic selection. Validate timestamps and looping with a short test, because duration and synchronization depend on the actual files and filters.

Audio-only source
Audio alone is not a conventional audiovisual video feed. Add a still image, visualizer, or looping video track and verify that YouTube’s event preview shows video as well as audible sound.
Select encoding settings for YouTube
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For a broadly compatible SDR baseline, H.264 video with stereo AAC audio is a practical choice. The correct video bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the current YouTube encoder-settings table, not a universal bitrate rule.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- YouTube lists H.264 at 720p/30 fps with 3 Mbps recommended; at 1080p/30 fps, it lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube Help figures, with no publication year stated on the page.
- The same guidance recommends 128 Kbps AAC for stereo audio.
- At 30 fps, a two-second keyframe interval corresponds to a GOP of 60 frames; keep the configured interval at or below YouTube’s stated four-second maximum.
- Upload capacity must cover the combined video and audio bitrate, plus any other traffic. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom, a test stream, checking the Live Control Room preview, and watching stream health: streaming tips.
These values are guidance rather than a guarantee of quality on every network. If upload capacity is limited, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate according to YouTube’s table and test for dropped frames.
Build and test an FFmpeg command
This example shows the shape of a command for an audiovisual MP4 that contains both video and audio. It is illustrative, not a tested universal command. Replace the file, settings, and output endpoint with values for your media, FFmpeg build, and event. Set the key securely at runtime rather than writing a real key into the command or a checked-in file.

The example’s bitrate is only an example value, not a recommendation for every resolution or frame rate. Check the relevant YouTube table entry and your measured upload capacity before using a setting. The command assumes libx264 is available and uses the FLV muxer for RTMP-style output; confirm that the chosen FFmpeg build supports your protocol and codecs. FFmpeg options are order-sensitive: input options apply to the next input, and output options apply to the following output. For separate audio and visual inputs, use the appropriate input options and map both streams explicitly rather than copying this example unchanged.
Package FFmpeg in Docker Compose
Use a maintained image or build and pin an image version that you have tested for the needed FFmpeg codecs and protocols. Run FFmpeg in the foreground as the container’s main process so Docker can observe its exit status. Mount media read-only where practical. Docker Compose supports service commands, images, volumes, environment, and secrets; see the Compose service reference.

This is a Compose structure, not a complete drop-in configuration: the image, command, secret file access, and safe construction of the output URL must match your deployment. Compose secret delivery and how an application reads the mounted secret need to be configured together; do not assume an image automatically reads a Docker secret. Docker recommends secrets for sensitive data rather than ordinary environment variables. If you use an .env file for local development, keep it out of version control and restrict its permissions. See Docker’s environment-variable guidance.
What the restart policy does—and does not do
restart: unless-stopped asks Docker to restart the container after it exits and to bring it back after a daemon restart, unless an operator stopped it manually. Restart policies apply after the container has started successfully. They respond to container lifecycle events; they do not detect a frozen feed, silent audio, an expired key, or an unhealthy YouTube connection. Read Docker’s restart-policy documentation and test behavior on the actual host.

Improve recovery from brief connection failures
Docker restarting a failed FFmpeg process and FFmpeg recovering an interrupted output are different mechanisms. FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer configuration that can retry transient RTMP failures; its example includes -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and -recovery_wait_time 1, along with encoding and explicit stream mapping. The example attempts recovery every second indefinitely. Check the FFmpeg options documentation for the installed version, then test how the actual YouTube event behaves through a dropped connection. Neither FIFO recovery nor a Docker restart policy is an end-to-end uptime guarantee.
Test, monitor, and end the broadcast
- Start with an unlisted or private test event and check the Live Control Room preview before going public.
- Verify that the video appears, the audio is audible and not clipping, the program loops as intended, and the container remains active.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and the FFmpeg/container logs. Test with movement and audio similar to the actual broadcast, not only a static connection check. YouTube’s guidance is at live streaming tips.
- Confirm the host’s outbound capacity has YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the total bitrate; account for a backup stream too if you send one.
- When finishing, stop the encoder and end the event in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer session will be archived automatically. See the encoder workflow guidance.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong event URL or key, unsupported RTMPS in the build, blocked outbound traffic, or a stale/invalid key. | Copy the URL and key again from the selected event’s Live Control Room settings; verify protocol/build support and host egress. If the key may be invalid, create a fresh one. Consult RTMPS troubleshooting and YouTube stream troubleshooting. |
| Audio works but the event has no video | The input is audio-only, the visual input is missing, or the video stream is not mapped to output. | Add a still image, visualizer, or looping video as a video source, map it explicitly, and confirm video in the preview. |
| One input is missing or the wrong track is sent | Automatic stream selection chose a different track, or the selected file has a different stream layout. | Inspect the media streams and set explicit -map options for the intended audio and video streams. |
| Playback does not loop | -stream_loop -1 is absent or positioned after the input it should affect, or the assumed input/playlist behavior is wrong. |
Place the option before its input and test the actual file duration and end-of-input behavior. |
| Video stutters, drops frames, or YouTube reports poor stream health | Upload capacity is too low for the combined bitrate, the network is unstable, or the selected encoding settings do not suit the connection. | Measure sustained upload capacity, retain the recommended headroom, lower resolution/frame rate/bitrate using YouTube’s table, and run another test. |
| The container exits and stays down | The command failed before FFmpeg could run, the image lacks a codec/protocol, the media path is wrong, or the restart policy is not configured as expected. | Inspect container logs and exit status, verify the mounted file and FFmpeg build, and test the policy on the host. A restart policy cannot repair a malformed command or missing dependency. |
| The container is running but the stream is no longer healthy | A live process does not prove the output is reaching YouTube; the connection may be stalled or the input may be silent. | Check FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health, test the FIFO recovery configuration for transient RTMP failures, and determine whether a process-level monitor is needed for your deployment. |
| Key appears in logs or deployment files | The secret was embedded in a command, environment, screenshot, or repository. | Restrict access, remove it from exposed locations, and reset the stream key in Live Control Room before continuing. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks for radio streams
A technically valid encoder does not grant rights to broadcast the music or visuals. Use material you created, licensed for this use, or otherwise have permission to stream, and check the terms that apply to any music, recordings, artwork, or video in the program. A live stream may be interrupted or restricted if rights or platform rules are not satisfied. Also make the stream meaningfully your own: repeating third-party material is not made safe merely by looping it or adding a static image. Review YouTube’s current live-stream requirements and the rights applicable to your content before going live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to loop uploaded video without maintaining a Docker host and network connection at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the cloud service keeps the stream running with your computer off.
- One flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo plans and pricing, then start the free first day.
