How to Convert iPhone MOV Files for a YouTube Loop Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You usually do not need to convert an iPhone MOV file just to use it with YouTube: YouTube supports MOV uploads, and OBS Media Source supports MOV playback with a Loop option. Test the original file in your intended setup first. If it does not play reliably there—or you need an MP4 copy—convert it with HandBrake to MP4 using H.264 video and AAC audio. Configure the separate YouTube Live encoder settings for the stream, not the local file.

Do you need to convert an iPhone MOV for YouTube?

No, not for upload compatibility alone. YouTube lists MOV as a supported video upload format. Its recommended upload encoding settings specify an MP4 container, H.264 video, and AAC-LC or Opus audio, but that recommendation does not mean every MOV must be converted before upload.

For a loop stream, the key question is whether the software playing the local file handles your particular MOV. OBS lists both MOV and MP4 as supported Media Source formats and provides a Loop property. Try the original in OBS before converting just for looping. A supported file type does not guarantee that every file, codec, or setup will behave as intended.

Convert the iPhone video to MP4 with HandBrake

  1. Copy the video to your computer. Use the current transfer method for your operating system. The steps vary by platform; consult Apple’s current instructions for your Mac or Windows setup rather than relying on a generic sequence.
  2. Test the original file first. Open it in the player or OBS Media Source you intend to use. If playback and audio work through the end and restart as expected, conversion may be unnecessary.
  3. Open the MOV in HandBrake only if you need a converted copy. Select an MP4 preset. HandBrake’s “Fast 1080p30” preset targets up to 1080p at 30 fps and encodes MP4 with H.264 video and AAC stereo audio. Match the recorded frame rate where practical; this preset is a compatibility-oriented option, not a way to preserve higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate footage unchanged.
  4. Keep the original. Conversion encodes a new file and may affect image quality, file size, or metadata. Retaining the source gives you a fallback and preserves the unconverted recording.
  5. Check the converted file. Play it through its ending and listen for audio, then test it in the actual OBS scene if that is your streaming setup.

Loop the video in OBS

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and choose the MOV or MP4 file. OBS documents support for both formats.
  2. Enable the source’s Loop property. OBS describes this setting as specifying whether the file plays again once playback has completed.
  3. Preview the scene through the end of the file. Confirm that the video restarts, the audio behaves as intended, and the transition is acceptable for your content.
  4. If the source fails to play or loops incorrectly, test the other format. Convert the MOV to MP4 if the original does not work in your actual software setup; do not convert on the assumption that YouTube requires it.

Set YouTube Live encoder settings separately

A local video file’s upload encoding and the live feed sent to YouTube are different parts of the workflow. Configure the encoder that sends the stream independently of the MOV-to-MP4 choice.

  • Protocol and video codec: YouTube’s live guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingestion and H.264 video.
  • Rate control: Use CBR (constant bitrate), as YouTube recommends for live encoding.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps. Select a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source and your available upload bandwidth.
  • Bitrate: Choose YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you are actually streaming. Do not substitute an upload-file bitrate for the live encoder target.

These are live-ingestion recommendations; YouTube’s supported upload-format and encoding guidance is a separate specification. Check YouTube’s current settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate before configuring a specific bitrate.

Troubleshooting MOV playback and looping

  • The MOV will not open in OBS: First confirm the path points to the intended file and test playback in the software you plan to use. If it still fails, create an MP4 copy with HandBrake and test that copy.
  • The video plays but has no audio: Check the Media Source and OBS audio mixer, then test the file in a normal player. If needed, convert to an MP4 preset with AAC audio and verify the result before going live.
  • The file plays once and stops: Reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. Preview beyond the file’s end to verify that it restarts.
  • The stream looks wrong even though the file plays locally: Check the live encoder’s resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR setting, and keyframe interval. These settings affect the live feed, not the source file’s local playback.
  • The converted copy looks softer or differs from the original: Compare it with the original and use settings suitable for the source. A HandBrake encode creates a new file; keep the original if its quality or metadata matters.
