You can use a second-hand laptop to send prerecorded video to YouTube as a live stream, but the computer must stay powered on and connected, and YouTube does not guarantee that a single stream running longer than 12 hours will be archived. First confirm your channel can livestream, test the specific laptop and connection with encoder software, and set the audience accurately if the videos are made for children.
What you need—and what an old laptop can’t guarantee
The basic setup is a computer running encoder software, prerecorded video, a stable internet connection, and your YouTube Live server URL and stream key. YouTube’s setup guidance does not establish a minimum laptop model, processor, memory, graphics capability, or internet speed for this use. That means there is no evidence-based specification that makes every second-hand laptop suitable for 24/7 operation.
Evaluate the particular machine under the workload you plan to use. Check that it can play your source video and run your chosen encoder, remains stable during an extended test, and has reliable power and network access where it will operate. A short successful test is useful, but it does not prove the laptop will run continuously without interruption.
- A laptop-based setup depends on the computer being on, the encoder running, and the local power and network connection remaining available.
- Keep a local copy of your source videos and, if you need an archive of the live broadcast, a local recording or other backup.
- Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream. A children’s audience does not make copyrighted material safe to rebroadcast.
Confirm that your channel can go live
YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the person livestreaming to be at least 16 years old. Set up the laptop and start the stream
- Prepare the machine. Install and open encoder software on the laptop. YouTube’s instructions do not prescribe a particular encoder or hardware configuration for this workflow. Make sure the computer can play the video and send the encoded stream reliably before depending on it.
- Create or open the stream in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup flow to obtain the stream details. Copy the Live server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the stream key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Load the prerecorded video. Configure the encoder to send the video you intend to play. Check the preview and listen to the audio before starting. Confirm that the picture, sound, and playback behave as intended.
- Go live and monitor it. Start the encoder’s stream and check YouTube’s preview/status. Monitor both video and audio during transmission; YouTube recommends checking stream health and keeping an archive backup. The exact encoder controls depend on the software you choose. - Test the complete arrangement before relying on it. Verify that playback continues, the laptop stays stable, and your local power and internet connection meet your needs. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or minimum computer specification for a second-hand laptop; follow the current settings and recommendations shown for your encoder and stream rather than assuming a fixed configuration fits every source and connection.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive warning
Keeping a stream live and preserving a replay are separate concerns. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be archived automatically, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 channel, do not treat one uninterrupted broadcast as a dependable saved video. Consider shorter sessions and keep a local archive backup if preserving the content matters; YouTube does not promise a particular restart schedule. Read YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Mark child-directed content accurately
If the stream is made for children, set its audience as Made for Kids. YouTube says creators should not rely only on automated systems to determine the audience designation. The setting has real trade-offs: live chat and Super Chat are unavailable for Made for Kids livestreams, and personalized advertising is disabled, though contextual ads may appear. YouTube also restricts other features on Made for Kids content. Use the designation that reflects the content and intended audience, not one chosen to preserve features. Understand monetization before building a 24/7 schedule
Continuous streaming does not guarantee earnings or YouTube Partner Program acceptance. YouTube’s general YPP overview consulted in 2026 lists the full ad-revenue threshold as 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 valid public long-form watch hours in the previous 365 days or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Eligibility also depends on policy compliance, location and account conditions, and YouTube’s channel review; reaching a threshold alone is not acceptance. These are platform requirements, not a prediction of income for an Indian channel. Check YouTube’s YPP eligibility overview for current terms.
YouTube’s monetization policies also expect content to be original and authentic, rather than mass-produced, generic, or repetitive. Reviewers may consider the channel as a whole, including its theme, videos, metadata, watch-time distribution, and About section. Repeating prerecorded footage around the clock is not a monetization shortcut. Build a channel around content you have the right to use and that adds genuine value.
