On a Mac, Apple’s built-in options are QuickTime Player’s File > Export As > Greater Compatibility (H.264) and Finder’s Services > Encode Selected Video Files. For future recordings, set the iPhone to Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible. In OBS, use the VLC Video source for a playlist; it requires VLC to be installed.
Why convert an iPhone clip from HEVC to H.264?
HEVC is also called H.265. Apple describes it as more storage-efficient than H.264 while preserving the same visual quality. H.264 is the more compatible choice when a particular player or workflow does not handle an HEVC file reliably. Converting changes the video format; it does not guarantee that every output will work in every computer’s OBS and VLC setup, so test the converted clips in the source you plan to stream.
Apple says that, to fully view, edit, or duplicate HEIF and HEVC media on Apple devices, update to iOS 11 or later or macOS High Sierra 10.13 or later. That guidance concerns Apple-device support; it does not establish compatibility with every OBS or VLC installation. Apple Support: Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices.
Convert existing HEVC clips on a Mac
Keep the original file until you have checked the exported H.264 copy. This lets you retry without losing the source footage.

QuickTime Player
- Open the HEVC video in QuickTime Player.
- Choose File > Export As.
- In the export dialog, choose Greater Compatibility (H.264), then save the converted copy.
Some QuickTime versions show an HEVC checkbox instead of the compatibility pop-up. Deselecting that checkbox selects the compatible export, according to Apple’s instructions.
Finder’s built-in video encoder
- In Finder, Control-click the video file.
- Choose Services > Encode Selected Video Files.
- Choose an H.264 option in the Settings menu, then start the encoding.
Menu names and available choices can vary by software version. For either Apple method, start by preserving the clip’s original dimensions and frame rate unless your planned stream canvas or receiving setup requires a change. Apple says 1080p or lower and 60 fps or lower are more broadly compatible with older devices; these are compatibility guidelines, not required OBS streaming settings.

Optional: HandBrake
HandBrake’s official documentation includes H.264 MP4 presets, including Production presets. HandBrake describes Production presets as mastering-oriented and says their files are typically much larger than compressed sources, so they are not automatically the right choice for a playlist whose main need is a reasonably sized, compatible playback file. Record future iPhone videos as H.264
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Camera > Formats.
- Select Most Compatible.
Apple says new photos and videos will then use JPEG or H.264. This setting affects new captures; it does not convert videos already recorded as HEVC. To return to HEIF/HEVC capture, select High Efficiency in the same Formats setting. The trade-off is format compatibility versus storage efficiency: Apple describes HEVC as more storage-efficient than H.264 at the same visual quality.

Add the converted clips to an OBS playlist
OBS’s playlist-capable source is VLC Video. OBS says VLC must be installed for this source to be available; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. The regular Media Source is for a media file rather than a playlist, and OBS lists common containers such as MP4 and MOV among its supported extensions. A familiar file extension alone does not confirm that a specific clip will play correctly in your setup.
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its 64-bit architecture to 64-bit OBS where applicable.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will carry the playlist.
- Open the source’s properties and add the converted H.264 files to its playlist.
- Set the playlist behavior you need, such as looping or shuffling, and review the source’s visibility behavior controls.
- Preview the source and confirm the intended video and audio playback before relying on it during a live stream.

Verify playback before streaming
Test the files in the actual OBS VLC Video source, not only in a separate media player. Check each relevant part of the playlist:
- Confirm the first and last items play, including the transition back to the beginning if looping is enabled.
- Listen for audio and check that it is in sync with the picture.
- Verify the playlist order, or confirm that shuffle is behaving as intended.
- Check what happens when the source is hidden and shown, using the visibility behavior controls.
- Watch for a clip that fails to open or stops unexpectedly; if one does, retry the conversion or adjust its output settings, then test that file again in OBS.
Neither the format label nor successful playback in another app proves that every clip will work in your specific OBS/VLC build. The final check is playback in the target scene.

If an iPhone video will not play in the OBS playlist
- The VLC Video source is missing: install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, OBS specifies that 64-bit VLC is required.
- The file is still HEVC: the iPhone’s Most Compatible setting only applies to new recordings. Export the existing clip through QuickTime Player or encode it in Finder using an H.264 option.
- The file opens in another player but not the playlist: add it to the VLC Video source and test it there. Support for a container such as MP4 or MOV does not establish that every codec or recording characteristic will work in the target setup.
- Some clips work and others do not: convert and test the problem files individually, keeping originals so you can retry. If older-device compatibility is part of the problem, Apple’s guidance is 1080p or lower and 60 fps or lower.
- The clip plays but the playlist behavior is wrong: review the VLC Video source’s playlist order, loop or shuffle setting, and visibility behavior controls.
