What Container and Codec Does YouTube Accept for Prerecorded Live Streams?

YouTube recommends MP4, H.264, and supported audio codecs for ordinary uploads. Prerecorded footage sent as a live feed uses separate RTMP/RTMPS codec and encoder settings.

It depends on what you mean by “prerecorded live stream.” For a normal video-file upload, YouTube recommends an MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. For prerecorded footage sent through a live encoder, YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Those are two different workflows, with different format requirements.

First choose the workflow: upload a video or send a live feed

Uploading a video file to YouTube is not the same as sending prerecorded footage through a live encoder. The first uses YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings; the second uses its live-ingestion settings. YouTube describes the upload formats as recommendations, not as an exhaustive list of formats it will accept.

Workflow Container or transport Video Audio
Regular video-file upload MP4 recommended H.264 recommended AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio
Prerecorded footage sent as a live encoder feed RTMP or RTMPS H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 AAC or MP3

For live ingestion, YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. Your encoder settings therefore describe the feed YouTube receives, not every playback format viewers will see. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Recommended settings for a regular video upload

For a prerecorded file you intend to upload as a normal video, YouTube recommends the following combination in its upload encoding settings:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Container: MP4.
  • Video codec: H.264.
  • Audio codec: AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio.
  • Audio sample rate: 48 kHz recommended.
  • Frame rate: Keep the upload frame rate the same as the recording’s frame rate; progressive video is recommended.
  • MP4 layout: Avoid edit lists and place the moov atom at the beginning of the file, a layout often called “Fast Start.”

These are YouTube’s published recommendations for uploads, not a statement that every other container or codec will be rejected.

Settings for prerecorded footage sent through a live encoder

When an encoder sends the footage as a live feed, use YouTube’s live encoder guidance rather than applying the normal-upload table. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as the ingestion protocol, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. The documented encoder settings support up to 60 fps.

  • Test before an event: Check the preview and stream health using representative motion and audio. YouTube’s current guidance is on its encoder settings page.

HDR live streams have additional requirements

For HDR live streaming, YouTube’s guidance specifies HEVC video and a 10-bit HDR configuration. The HLS instructions use TS segments that are 1–4 seconds long. AV1 is not supported for HDR in the encoder settings guidance. Check YouTube’s HDR live-streaming instructions and confirm that your encoder supports the required configuration; do not assume the standard SDR choices automatically apply to HDR.

Can you upload an MP4 and make it a live stream?

An MP4 upload follows the normal video-upload path; uploading a file does not itself make it a live broadcast. To send prerecorded footage as a live event, use an encoder or a service that sends the footage to YouTube’s live ingest using a stream URL and key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes creating a stream with an encoder and notes cloud-based tools as an option for continuous prerecorded streams.

DIY encoder workflow

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. The precise live settings are managed in the stream configuration; see YouTube’s stream-settings help.
  2. Load the prerecorded video or playlist into an encoder that can send a live feed. Set its output to RTMP or RTMPS and select a supported video and audio codec.
  3. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds); use a frame rate no higher than 60 fps for the documented encoder workflow.
  4. Start the encoder, then check YouTube’s preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast. For important streams, test with similar motion and audio in advance.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder setup guidance does not promise the same automatic archive treatment for streams lasting 12 hours or longer.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.

Common format and streaming problems

  • The file uploads, but it is not live: A normal upload is not a live encoder feed. Create a YouTube live stream and send footage through an encoder or cloud service.
  • The encoder cannot connect: Check that you selected the correct RTMP/RTMPS server address and stream key, and that the key has not been mistyped or changed. Keep it private.
  • YouTube reports unstable or incompatible ingest: Confirm the encoder is using a documented live codec, CBR, and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds or less than or equal to the 4-second maximum; test the preview and stream health.
  • HDR output is rejected or appears wrong: Verify HEVC and the required 10-bit HDR configuration, and check the relevant HLS segment settings if using HLS. Do not use AV1 for HDR under YouTube’s documented encoder guidance.
  • The live archive is missing after a very long broadcast: Automatic archiving is documented for streams under 12 hours; do not rely on the same behavior for a longer stream.
