Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check the file itself, play it from beginning to end, test its loop in the exact playout setup you plan to use, and confirm the resulting live feed in YouTube Live Control Room. A metadata scan can reveal mismatched codecs or missing tracks, but it cannot prove that a file will loop cleanly or keep a 24/7 stream running.
1. Inspect what is actually inside the file
Do not rely on the filename or extension. Use a trusted media probe such as FFprobe to inspect the container, duration, video and audio streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio sample rate, and channel layout. FFprobe is designed to display multimedia stream and format information: FFprobe documentation.
Confirm the file has the picture and audio tracks you expect. A file with no audio stream may be intentional, but it should not be mistaken for a file whose sound is simply quiet. Likewise, check that its duration, resolution, and frame rate match the version you meant to prepare.
- Container and codecs: Identify the container and the codecs used by each stream; a file extension alone does not establish either.
- Video: Check that a video stream is present, with sensible dimensions and frame rate for your intended output.
- Audio: Check that the expected audio stream is present and note its codec, sample rate, and channel layout.
- Duration: Make sure the reported duration is plausible and that the file is not accidentally truncated.
This is a screening step, not a pass certificate. There is no universal automated threshold that proves a file is “24/7 ready.”

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Decode or play the entire file
Play or decode the whole file, not only its opening seconds or a thumbnail. Watch and listen for damaged frames, black gaps, freezes, unexpected silence, clipping, and audio that drifts out of sync. If the file is long, inspect the full run rather than assuming that a successful start means every later section is readable.
Compare competing exports by whether each completes a full decode, looks and sounds right at the intended stream quality, and has the expected duration and tracks. A clean metadata report does not rule out an error later in the file.

3. Test the exact loop in your playout setup
If your stream will repeat the video, test the end-to-start transition in the actual player or playout application you intend to use. Watch and listen across multiple loops. Check for a blank interval, a stuck frame, an audio pop, an unintended pause, or a transition that cuts off content.
The loop behavior belongs to the playout software, not just the media file. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not specify which program must play a prerecorded file continuously, so test the application you choose rather than assuming its loop behavior.

4. Match the live feed to YouTube’s ingestion guidance
A file’s encoding and the live encoder’s output are related but not the same thing. YouTube’s live settings page describes requirements and recommendations for the incoming live feed; use that guidance for the encoder or streaming workflow that sends the feed to YouTube, not as a file-corruption test. Check the current table before configuring a stream because platform recommendations can change: YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS.
- Video ingestion codecs: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1.
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate mode: CBR.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube supports AAC only.
- Additional recommendations: Square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 44.1 kHz stereo (48 kHz for 5.1).
The bitrate depends on the ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264 live ingestion, YouTube’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60, and 8 Mbps for both 720p30 and 720p60. These are live encoder recommendations, not minimum file qualities or indicators of whether a video can be decoded or looped.

Do not substitute YouTube’s separate upload-encoding recommendations for live ingestion settings. For context, YouTube’s upload guidance accessed in 2026 recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p SDR H.264 at standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 12 Mbps at high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). Those are upload recommendations, not a test of continuous live playback: YouTube recommended upload encoding settings. That page also describes MP4, H.264 progressive video, and “Fast Start” guidance for applicable uploads; it notes that the described features are available to partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager.
Make sure the available upload bandwidth can support the configured feed. YouTube advises testing before going live and says tests should include audio and movement similar to the planned stream.

5. Verify the actual YouTube preview
- Start a test feed through the same playout and encoder workflow you intend to use. Keep the event unlisted if you want a test that is not publicly listed; YouTube says a test can be public or unlisted.
- Open Live Control Room and inspect the preview for stable picture and audible sound. Check motion and audio, not just a still frame.
- Check the event’s viewing path: confirm it is accessible from the channel and watch page, and test it on a mobile device.
- Monitor after launch: keep an eye on audio and video. If you are recording a local archive as well, verify that the saved recording is intact.
YouTube’s operational guidance recommends testing with sound and movement similar to the intended stream and checking that viewers can access the event: YouTube live streaming tips.
6. Rehearse the long run, not just the opening
A short preview cannot prove that a 24-hour stream will stay continuous. Where practical, run an extended rehearsal that reaches at least one complete file loop. During it, check that the playback process, source storage, power, and network remain stable, and watch the feed for interruptions or quality problems. This is a practical continuity check, not a duration mandated by YouTube.
Common checks that fail—and what to do
- The file has picture but no sound: Recheck the audio-stream listing and confirm whether sound is expected. If a track is present, play it through the entire file and verify it is audible.
- The file plays at the start but fails later: Run a full-file decode or playback and identify where it stops or shows corruption; do not approve the file based only on its first frame.
- The loop has a gap or pop: Test the transition in the intended playout application and adjust the source edit or loop setup, then repeat the test.
- The Control Room preview has unstable video or audio: Check the live encoder’s codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, audio settings, and available upload bandwidth against YouTube’s current ingestion guidance.
- The preview works but viewers cannot reach the event: Check the event’s visibility and confirm access from the channel, watch page, and a mobile device.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Technical readiness does not grant permission to stream the contents. Before using a recording in a continuous public stream, make sure you have the rights needed for its video and audio, including music, game footage, and any third-party material. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from whether a file decodes or a live preview works. For recurring streams built from prerecorded material, check the applicable YouTube policies and the permissions attached to every included work; a successful test is not evidence of rights clearance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of prerecorded video, StreamNeo keeps it running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; the upload streams as made, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, once per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
