Raspberry Pi 4 vs. Raspberry Pi 5 for an FFmpeg YouTube Loop Stream

Pi 4 has a documented H.264 hardware-encoding path; Pi 5 uses software encoders. The right choice depends on whether your FFmpeg workflow must transcode and how the actual setup performs.

Both Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5 can be used in an FFmpeg workflow that loops a video to YouTube Live, but the key difference is how they encode video. Raspberry Pi documents H.264 hardware encoding on Pi 4 up to 1080p30; Pi 5 uses software video encoders. If your file can be sent without transcoding, that distinction may matter less. If the Pi must encode the video, check the required output and test the exact workload before relying on either board for a continuous stream.

Which Raspberry Pi should you choose?

Question Raspberry Pi 4 Raspberry Pi 5
Video encoding path Raspberry Pi’s Model B specifications list H.264 encoding up to 1080p30. Its technical comparison includes hardware encoding with h264_v4l2m2m. Raspberry Pi 4 Model B specifications and Raspberry Pi camera and encoding documentation. Raspberry Pi documents software video encoding; its comparison uses libx264 presets. The CPU load and selected encoder settings therefore matter when transcoding. Raspberry Pi camera and encoding documentation.
Best fit Worth considering when H.264 transcoding is required and you want to use its documented hardware-encoding path. A reasonable option if you already own one or your tested software-encoding setup meets the target output.
What the specifications do not establish Neither published capability is a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 streaming for a particular file, resolution, frame rate, audio track, FFmpeg build, cooling arrangement, power supply or network.

If you already own a board, start by testing it rather than buying another on the assumption that one model is universally better. The available figures do not establish a winner for purchase cost, current availability, cooling or sustained reliability.

Check whether FFmpeg must encode your video

A filename ending in .mp4 does not tell you whether its video and audio streams match your intended YouTube Live output. Inspect the streams before choosing an encoding path: note the codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio codec and container. If the existing streams are compatible with the chosen output and protocol, FFmpeg stream copy may avoid video encoding. If they are incompatible, you will need to transcode, and the Pi’s encoder path becomes more important.

FFmpeg options and available encoders vary by installed build. Check the local build’s encoder availability and test the actual file and command; neither the board specification nor the encoder name alone validates every file-and-stream combination. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option and -re as a way to read input at its native rate. See FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg protocol documentation.

Set the YouTube output before building the command

Choose the target resolution and frame rate first, then use YouTube’s current live encoder guidance to select the supported video settings and recommended bitrate for that specific mode. There is no single bitrate that is right for every resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for ingestion. Check the current requirements at YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Use the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s live setup. Do not publish, share or paste your key into a public example: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. The exact FFmpeg command depends on the input, installed build, encoding choice and output protocol, so treat the following as option placement rather than a ready-to-run command:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -f flv "[YouTube ingest URL]/[STREAM KEY]"

Here, -stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to loop the input indefinitely, and -re paces reading at the input’s native rate. Replace the bracketed parts with the values and options appropriate to your setup. Use stream copy only when the streams are compatible with the selected output; otherwise choose an encoder available in your installed FFmpeg build. Keep the real stream key private.

Prepare the Pi and validate the stream

  1. Identify your hardware. Confirm the exact board model and revision, available memory, storage and power setup. For a new Pi 4 Model B build, Raspberry Pi lists a microSD slot and USB-C 5V input with a minimum 3A rating in its published specifications. These are device specifications, not a guarantee of stream performance.
  2. Inspect the media. Check video and audio codecs, resolution and frame rate rather than relying on the container extension. Decide whether stream copy is suitable or transcoding is necessary.
  3. Choose YouTube’s ingest settings. Match resolution, frame rate, bitrate and audio settings to YouTube’s current guidance for the selected mode; use RTMPS if you choose the recommended secure ingest protocol.
  4. Check FFmpeg capabilities. Confirm that the installed build contains the encoders and protocol support your command needs. A build that lacks the selected encoder cannot run that encoding path.
  5. Run a representative test. Test the intended file, output settings and duration while observing CPU load, temperature or throttling, network behavior, dropped frames and YouTube’s ingest or preview status. This is a validation step for your own setup, not a published reliability test of either board.
  6. Plan for unattended operation. Protect the stream key, decide how FFmpeg will be restarted after a process or connection failure, and assess the power, cooling and local network for the intended location. A wired connection can be a practical choice for a fixed installation, but does not guarantee adequate or stable upstream bandwidth.

Pi 5 low-latency guidance is not an FFmpeg setting

Raspberry Pi’s documentation describes a --low-latency mode for its rpicam-vid camera software, with trade-offs in coding efficiency and maximum frame rate. That flag belongs to rpicam-vid; it is not an FFmpeg option and does not establish how a file-loop FFmpeg stream will perform. For this use case, evaluate the FFmpeg encoder, preset and output settings you actually intend to run.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube rejects the stream or shows no preview: Check the ingest URL and private stream key, selected protocol, output container, codecs and settings against YouTube’s current guidance. Confirm that the stream is reaching YouTube’s ingest status page.
  • Video stutters or frames are dropped: Check whether the Pi is transcoding, whether CPU load or temperature is high, and whether the network can sustain the selected output. Test at a lower supported resolution or frame rate if the required mode is not sustainable.
  • The stream stops at the end of the file: Confirm that -stream_loop -1 is applied as an input option before the relevant -i input. Check FFmpeg’s output for input read errors or process termination.
  • Audio is missing or rejected: Inspect the source audio codec and output options, and check that the resulting audio format is supported for the chosen RTMP/RTMPS workflow. YouTube’s live guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio.
  • The selected encoder is unavailable: Verify the installed FFmpeg build and choose an encoder it actually provides. Do not assume a Raspberry Pi capability means the same encoder is exposed by every FFmpeg build.
  • The stream does not recover after a disconnect: Determine whether FFmpeg exited or is still running, and arrange an appropriate restart or supervision method for your installation. A loop option repeats the input; by itself, it does not guarantee recovery from every network or process failure.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply

Looping a file does not grant permission to stream its contents. Use videos and audio you own or are licensed to use, and check YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies before broadcasting. A technically valid, continuously running stream is not by itself evidence that the channel complies with YouTube rules or qualifies for monetization; review the current policies that apply to your channel and content.
