How to Compress a 24-Hour Video Playlist for a Slow Upload

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To make a 24-hour video upload more manageable, encode a copy at a lower bitrate or resolution, test a representative section for acceptable quality, then estimate the transfer time using your sustained upload speed. The smaller file will usually take less time to send, but can lose detail; a long encode may itself take many hours. Check the destination’s format, duration, and file-size rules before choosing settings, because the service is not specified here.

How much data does 24 hours of video contain?

At a constant average total bitrate, a 24-hour file is approximately the total bitrate in megabits per second multiplied by 10.8, in decimal gigabytes. This comes from bitrate × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8; it is a planning calculation, not a guaranteed output size. The examples below use YouTube’s recommended SDR video bitrates for standard frame rates and its recommended 384 kbps stereo audio rate. The sizes are derived estimates, not figures published by YouTube.

Example export Video bitrate Approximate 24-hour size
1080p SDR, 24/25/30 fps 8 Mbps 90.5 GB
720p SDR, 24/25/30 fps 5 Mbps 58.1 GB
480p SDR, 24/25/30 fps 2.5 Mbps 31.1 GB

Real files differ with scene complexity, encoder behavior, audio configuration, and container overhead. Lowering bitrate or resolution reduces the data to upload, but may make motion, small text, dark scenes, or fine detail harder to see. YouTube’s figures are recommendations, not universal requirements or limits; another host may specify different settings. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings also give different recommendations for high-frame-rate and HDR material.

Check the source and destination before encoding

“Playlist” could mean one 24-hour file or multiple separate entries, and the destination is not identified. Those details affect export and upload planning. Before starting, find the destination’s current accepted formats, file-size and duration limits, and whether it supports resumable uploads. Record the source’s resolution, frame rate, progressive or interlaced scan, SDR or HDR presentation, audio tracks, and current size.

  • Keep an untouched copy of the source material and encode a separate file.
  • Do not upscale low-resolution footage: it adds data without restoring detail that was never present.
  • For YouTube, its guidance recommends MP4, H.264 video, progressive scanning, and retaining the recorded frame rate. It advises deinterlacing interlaced footage before upload. As YouTube puts it, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” YouTube Help
  • If the material is HDR, use the destination’s HDR guidance rather than applying SDR targets automatically. YouTube’s cited recommendations, for example, list 10 Mbps for 1080p and 6.5 Mbps for 720p SDR-equivalent frame-rate categories in HDR.

Compress the video in HandBrake

Choose a practical starting point

HandBrake’s Web presets are intended for internet sharing, while its Creator presets target video hosts such as YouTube and Vimeo. Most official presets use constant-quality encoding: the encoder aims for a consistent visual quality and the resulting file size varies with the footage. That is useful when quality matters more than hitting an exact upload size. HandBrake’s official preset documentation

  1. Open the source or source segment in HandBrake and select a Web or Creator preset as a starting point.
  2. Keep the output resolution at or below the source resolution. Set the frame rate to the source frame rate and, for YouTube, follow its guidance to use constant frame rate where appropriate.
  3. Choose MP4 and H.264 for a YouTube-oriented export, unless the destination specifies otherwise. Preserve the needed audio tracks and check that the audio is intelligible and in sync.
  4. Encode a representative short section before committing to the full 24 hours. Include motion, small text or interface elements, dark scenes, and speech if they occur in the material.
  5. Watch and listen to the test file on the kind of display and speakers your audience is likely to use. If artifacts or unreadable detail are unacceptable, raise quality or bitrate, or retain more resolution; if the test looks good, apply the settings to the full source.

For YouTube SDR at 24, 25, or 30 fps, its recommended video bitrates include 8 Mbps at 1080p, 5 Mbps at 720p, and 2.5 Mbps at 480p. For 48, 50, or 60 fps, the corresponding recommendations are 12, 7.5, and 4 Mbps. YouTube separately lists HDR recommendations; for instance, 1080p at standard frame rates is 10 Mbps and 720p is 6.5 Mbps. These numbers are starting references for that service, not guaranteed quality outcomes for your footage. YouTube also recommends 384 kbps stereo audio. See the current YouTube settings.

When the upload has a strict size or time window

Constant-quality encoding does not promise a particular final size. If you must stay under a file-size target, use an average video bitrate or target size instead, and reserve part of the total bitrate budget for audio and container overhead. FFmpeg’s documentation describes bitrate as an encoding option; it can help calculate a target, but the result still depends on encoding and file details. FFmpeg documentation

For an approximate video bitrate budget, convert the desired file size to bits and divide by 86,400 seconds. Subtract an allowance for audio and overhead from the total budget before setting the video bitrate. A lower target makes a smaller file but can visibly degrade the picture, so test first rather than assuming a number will suit the content.

Estimate whether the upload will finish in time

Divide the file size in bits by your sustained upstream rate in bits per second. This gives an idealized lower-bound transfer time; real connections vary, and protocol overhead, interruptions, and other network use add time.

For example, a decimal 58 GB file contains about 464 billion bits. At a sustained 5 Mbps upload rate, the arithmetic estimate is about 25.8 hours before overhead or interruptions. Measure or observe the upload speed you can sustain—not the advertised download speed—and leave room for retries or an overnight interruption. If the destination supports resumable uploads, that can reduce the risk of losing progress, but check its current documentation rather than assuming it does.

Balance file size, quality, and encoding time

  • Resolution and frame rate: Lower resolution and frame rate can reduce the data rate, but may soften detail or motion. Keep the source frame rate unless the destination gives a reason to change it.
  • SDR or HDR: Preserve the source presentation and use destination-appropriate settings. Do not treat SDR recommendations as HDR settings.
  • Constant quality or target bitrate: Constant quality tends to keep visual quality more consistent while file size varies; a target bitrate makes size more predictable while quality varies.
  • Encoding speed: A 24-hour encode may take many hours. HandBrake says its hardware presets use dedicated media engines optimized for maximum encoding speed; availability and results depend on supported hardware and settings. HandBrake’s video quality documentation
  • Transfer reliability: A smaller file helps, but the upload window still depends on sustained upstream speed and whether the host can resume an interrupted transfer.

Troubleshooting a failed or disappointing export

The file is still too large

Confirm whether the encode used constant quality, which does not target a fixed size. If a limit is strict, select a target bitrate, account for audio and overhead, and test again. If the picture can tolerate it, reduce resolution or bitrate in measured steps rather than making a drastic change without checking the result.

The picture looks blocky or text is hard to read

The bitrate may be too low for the footage, particularly in motion or detailed scenes. Raise the target bitrate or quality, or preserve more resolution after a short test. Check at normal viewing size, not only in a tiny preview.

The output has the wrong motion or looks uneven

Check that the frame rate matches the source and that interlaced material has been handled properly. YouTube recommends uploading at the recorded frame rate and deinterlacing interlaced sources; other destinations may differ.

The upload estimate seems unrealistic

Make sure you used upload speed rather than download speed, and convert both file size and rate to matching units. The calculation assumes a steady rate; congestion, shared network use, and interruptions extend the actual transfer.

The encode takes too long

Long duration means even a faster preset can take substantial time. HandBrake’s hardware presets may use supported dedicated media engines to prioritize speed, but compare a short output for quality before encoding the full program.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded videos, rather than uploading one finished 24-hour file to a video host, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. This is for YouTube streams, not a way to upload a finished file to an unspecified host. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
