For a preservation-oriented master, use FFV1 version 3 in a Matroska (.mkv) container when your editing and playback workflow supports it. Keep that master separate from the smaller, upload-ready copy you send to YouTube: YouTube recommends MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC or Opus audio for general uploads, and it re-encodes uploads for playback.
Why keep an archive master separate from the YouTube upload?
An upload file is prepared for platform delivery; it is not automatically the best file to keep as your long-term source. YouTube’s recommended upload settings are useful when preparing a delivery copy, but YouTube re-encodes uploaded videos to optimize playback. Keeping a higher-quality preservation master means you can generate a new upload copy later without relying on a file that has already been optimized for a particular platform.
This separation is especially useful for a 24/7 channel that reuses recordings in loops or playlists. Treat the archive as the source of future versions, and treat the YouTube copy as a replaceable access file.
Which format should you use?
| Purpose | Recommended direction | What it is suited for |
|---|---|---|
| File-based preservation master | FFV1 version 3 in Matroska (.mkv) | The Library of Congress lists this among its preferred file-based moving-image formats for 2025–2026, after IMF. It describes FFV1 as lossless and intended for long-term audiovisual preservation. |
| Existing professional post-production workflow | ProRes in QuickTime (.mov) | Another preferred file-based option in the Library of Congress’s 2025–2026 statement. It may be the practical choice when existing production tools and handoffs already depend on it. |
| YouTube upload or access copy | MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC or Opus audio | YouTube’s general recommended upload settings. Match the recorded frame rate. |
| Lightweight viewing proxy | MPEG-4 (.mp4) | The Library of Congress lists MPEG-4 as a viewing proxy; it should not replace the preservation master by default. |
The Library of Congress’s preference order is for file-based moving-image formats, not a guarantee that one format fits every creator’s tools, metadata needs, or production requirements. IMF is listed ahead of FFV1/MKV; ProRes/MOV is also listed as preferred. Choose based on what your workflow can reliably create, inspect, and reuse.

Is FFV1 better than H.264 for archiving?
They serve different purposes. FFV1 is described by the Library of Congress as lossless and intended for workflows that seek to avoid generational loss. H.264 is part of YouTube’s general upload recommendation, which is aimed at processing and playback rather than archival preservation. A practical arrangement is to retain the FFV1/MKV master and create an H.264/MP4 delivery copy when you upload.
Lossless encoding avoids codec generation loss; it does not make a file immune to deletion, corruption, missing metadata, storage failure, or dependence on a workflow that becomes difficult to operate. The Matroska/FFV1 format description also notes that improved timecode support rather than timestamps, and support for multi-planar and 3D video, are still in development. Those issues may not affect ordinary finished channel videos, but they matter if your material relies on specialized production features.

How to build a practical archive and upload workflow
- Keep the best available original or production master. Do not discard the source simply because you have made a compressed upload file.
- Create a preservation copy when appropriate. If your software and playback workflow support it, encode a copy as FFV1 version 3 in a Matroska (.mkv) container.
- Preserve the original production characteristics. Retain the original resolution and frame rate. Keep meaningful details such as color characteristics, audio, subtitles, and associated metadata.
- Make a separate YouTube delivery copy. Use MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC or Opus audio, and preserve the recorded frame rate as YouTube recommends.
- Check the converted files. Play the preservation copy and upload copy after conversion; confirm picture, sound, subtitles, and timing before using the upload in a 24/7 playlist.
- Document the conversion. Record the codec, container, resolution, frame rate, color characteristics, audio details, subtitles, and any changes made.
- Keep independently recoverable copies. Maintain backups on separate storage rather than treating one drive or other physical carrier as a preservation plan.
YouTube upload bitrate is not an archival target
YouTube’s recommended SDR upload settings include H.264, 4:2:0, and bitrate targets by resolution and frame rate. For 1080p SDR, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps at 24, 25, or 30 fps, and 12 Mbps at 48, 50, or 60 fps. These figures are YouTube upload recommendations, not preservation bitrates; do not use them to decide how much quality to retain in an archive master.
Likewise, retain the frame rate at which the video was recorded rather than converting solely to match a generic upload target. The purpose of the upload copy is to meet platform delivery guidance; the archive should retain the best available source and its production characteristics.

Storage, backups, and long-term access
There is no defensible single storage-capacity recommendation without knowing how much footage you have, its resolution and bitrate mix, how long you will retain it, and your budget. Lossless masters can require substantial storage, so estimate from your own material and retention needs before selecting capacity.
The Library of Congress cautions that a digital format tied inextricably to a particular physical carrier is not suitable by itself for long-term preservation. Apply the same principle to an archive: keep independent copies and plan how to recover them if one storage location or device fails. A single external drive can be one copy, but is not an archival guarantee.
