Green frames are a symptom, not a diagnosis. The reliable way to fix them is to find the earliest point where they appear: in the source, in FFmpeg’s local output, or only in YouTube playback. Then change one relevant setting at a time and compare again. A pixel-format change, hardware-decoding change, or playlist adjustment is not a universal fix.
Find where the green frames begin
Compare the same section of video at three stages: the original source, a local output made with the same FFmpeg path, and the YouTube stream. Note the first stage where the artifact is visible. This isolates the part of the pipeline to investigate; it does not, by itself, identify the cause.
- The source is already green: FFmpeg cannot restore information that is absent or damaged in the original. Check another source copy or recording before changing output settings.
- The source is clean but local FFmpeg output is green: investigate stream selection, decoding, filters, pixel format, and encoding using the command and logs.
- Local output is clean but YouTube playback is green: preserve the clean sample and logs, then inspect the output and ingest path. The available FFmpeg documentation does not establish a particular YouTube ingest rule that explains this symptom.
Keep the test controlled: change one setting at a time, use the same segment, and record whether the result changes.
Capture the details needed to diagnose it
Before editing the command, save the exact command line and a complete FFmpeg diagnostic log for a run that includes a bad frame. Record:

Use documentation that matches the installed FFmpeg version. The project notes that its online documentation is regenerated nightly and recommends consulting locally installed documentation for older versions: FFmpeg documentation.
Check which streams FFmpeg selects
Confirm that FFmpeg is reading the intended video stream, not another video stream in the same input. The -map option controls stream selection. Compare your explicit mappings, if any, with the stream indexes and metadata reported for the input. An otherwise valid command can produce an unexpected result if it selects the wrong stream. See the FFmpeg advanced options documentation.

Do not add or remove mappings blindly. First establish which input stream contains the expected picture, then ensure the output maps that stream and the intended audio stream.
Inspect pixel format before testing a conversion
Record the pixel format before and after any filters and at the output. If those details point to a format-compatibility problem, test one explicit conversion and inspect the resulting local file before sending it to YouTube. A format conversion is a targeted experiment, not a presumed cure for green frames.

FFmpeg documents a + prefix for pixel-format selection: it makes failure to select the requested format an error and disables automatic conversions inside filtergraphs. This strict mode can reveal an unsupported format or an assumption about automatic conversion, but it can also make a previously successful command fail. Use it to diagnose a specific format-selection question, not as a setting to add without a reason. See the FFmpeg advanced options documentation.
Test -drop_changed only when frame parameters change
If the input is live and logs or other evidence show frame parameters changing midstream and causing filtergraph reinitialization, test the per-stream input option -drop_changed on the relevant input stream. FFmpeg documents it as defaulting to false; when enabled, a frame with differing parameters is dropped rather than triggering filtergraph reinitialization. The manual describes it as useful for some corrupted but still decodable live-stream inputs.

This option is not a general green-frame repair. It trades affected frames for filtergraph continuity, so compare the result with the original behavior and confirm that the particular parameter changes are relevant. Check the option documentation for syntax appropriate to your installed build.

If your command uses hardware decoding, repeat a controlled run with hardware acceleration disabled while keeping the input, filters, and output settings otherwise the same. Compare the same frames in both local outputs. If only one path shows the artifact, that is useful evidence for narrowing the issue; it does not alone prove a hardware defect.

FFplay documents hardware-acceleration and renderer options that can help reproduce playback differences. Those options do not establish hardware acceleration as a general cause of green frames. See the FFplay documentation.
Identify the playlist type before changing playlist settings
“Playlist” can mean an FFmpeg concat/demuxer input, an HLS output, or another workflow. First identify which one you use; HLS muxer options do not apply automatically to other playlist types.
If the workflow is HLS
Check that segment paths resolve, that the playlist type suits the intended use, and that each variant contains the intended audio and video streams. FFmpeg’s HLS muxer supports event and VOD playlist types and provides var_stream_map for grouping streams into variants. Verify the stream indexes used in the mapping against the actual input rather than copying an example without adapting it. The FFmpeg HLS muxer documentation describes the playlist types and mapping syntax.
If the workflow is a concat or another playlist input
Check that the referenced files are the expected files and that the transition between entries does not coincide with the first bad frame. Keep the playlist mechanism distinct from the video encoding settings: do not apply HLS-specific fixes unless the stream is actually using HLS.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The original source contains the green frames | Test another copy or source. A downstream output change cannot repair missing or damaged source picture information. |
| Only the FFmpeg local output contains them | Check selected stream indexes and -map, inspect pixel formats around filters and output, and use logs to identify decoding or filter behavior. Change one relevant setting per test. |
| They begin when live-input frame parameters change | If the logs support that diagnosis, test -drop_changed on the relevant input stream and assess the dropped-frame trade-off. |
| The command uses hardware decoding | Compare a software-decoding run with the same input and output settings. Treat the comparison as isolation, not proof of cause. |
| They appear only in YouTube playback while the local output is clean | Retain the local sample, full FFmpeg log, codec and pixel-format settings, and ingest diagnostics. Do not assume a platform defect or a particular YouTube setting without supporting evidence. |
| The stream uses HLS variants | Check segment paths, playlist type, and whether var_stream_map references the intended stream indexes. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube, rather than to repair an FFmpeg playlist workflow, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded video and streams to YouTube only; it does not go live from a camera. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
