To live stream on YouTube, make sure your channel is eligible, choose a method—mobile, webcam, encoder, or console—then create or schedule the stream, test it, and start broadcasting. You do not need expensive equipment to begin: a phone or computer webcam may be enough for a simple stream. For gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio and video gear, use an encoder.
Before you start: check eligibility
Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says activating live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before an event. Its general guidance sets the minimum age for live streaming at 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming overview for current requirements.
Mobile streaming has additional requirements. YouTube’s mobile help page lists at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, live streaming enabled, and a device running Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+. These requirements apply to the mobile workflow, not every way to stream. Rules and availability can change, so check YouTube’s current mobile instructions before relying on them.
Choose how you want to stream
| Method | Best suited to | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Quick updates or video captured on the move | An eligible phone or tablet and YouTube’s mobile workflow |
| Webcam | A straightforward computer-camera broadcast | A computer with a webcam |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio/video equipment | Encoder software or hardware, plus the YouTube stream URL and stream key |
| Console | Streaming directly from a supported modern console | A console streaming workflow; follow the console maker’s instructions |
YouTube supports vertical and horizontal presentations. Vertical streams can appear in the Shorts feed on mobile, but that is not a promise of reach. Available features differ between formats. If you choose a dual-format layout in Live Control Room, check the current interface and preview the crop before going live. See YouTube’s overview for current format details.

How to set up an encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Create a new live stream or schedule one. Add its title, visibility, and other event details. Scheduling gives you an event to share ahead of time.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream settings, copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings before broadcasting. See Manage live stream settings.
- Configure your encoder and start sending the feed. Select the intended camera, screen, game, and audio inputs in your encoder, then start its stream output. Exact controls depend on the encoder you use; YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the platform workflow.
- Wait for the preview, then start the broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview before selecting “Go live.” Starting the encoder output and making the event live are distinct steps in this workflow.
How to start a mobile, webcam, or console stream
For mobile, use YouTube’s mobile live-streaming flow after confirming the channel and device meet its current requirements. For webcam streaming, use YouTube’s webcam option and select the computer’s camera and microphone. For a console, follow the console maker’s current setup steps and check YouTube’s live dashboard to confirm the event is actually broadcasting. The available controls differ by method; YouTube’s overview links the supported workflows.
Test the stream before the real event
Run a short unlisted test before an important public stream. YouTube recommends testing in advance and checking the preview and playback. Use this preflight list:

Settings that affect the viewing experience
Latency
Latency is the delay between capturing video and viewers seeing it. Lower latency can make interaction feel more immediate, but can increase playback buffering. Choose based on whether real-time interaction matters for your event, rather than assuming one setting is best for every stream. Details are in YouTube’s live stream settings help.

DVR
DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. Consider whether that is useful for your event and check the stream settings. See Manage live stream settings.
HLS ingestion
HLS is an advanced ingestion option for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. Because HLS sends video in segments, YouTube notes it has higher latency than RTMP. Most beginners do not need to change ingestion protocols; consult YouTube’s HLS setup guide if your encoder or format requires it.

Copyright, policy, and access
Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Live-streaming privileges can be restricted, so check YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions. If minors will appear in or run a stream, review the current age-related rules rather than assuming the general minimum covers every situation. Use music, game footage, and other material only when you have the rights or permission needed; an unlisted test does not grant rights to use someone else’s content.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | The channel is not verified, has a restriction, or first-time activation is still processing | Check channel eligibility and restrictions; if you just enabled live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for activation. |
| The mobile live option is unavailable | The channel or device does not meet mobile-specific requirements | Check the current mobile eligibility rules, including subscriber threshold, verification, restriction status, activation, and operating system. |
| The Live Control Room has no preview | The encoder is not sending video, or its stream URL/key or selected source is incorrect | Confirm the encoder is connected to the correct YouTube event, recheck the URL and key, and verify its video input before trying again. |
| Viewers see no sound or the wrong sound | The encoder or device is using the wrong microphone/audio source, or the input is muted | Check the selected audio input and mute controls, then confirm sound in the preview or an unlisted test. |
| The event is not visible to the intended audience | Visibility is set incorrectly, or you are checking a different event/watch page | Confirm the event’s visibility and open its actual watch page on a separate device or browser. |
| The encoder feed appears, but the event has not begun for viewers | The encoder is sending a feed, but the YouTube broadcast has not been started | Wait for the preview and select “Go live” in Live Control Room when ready. |
| An unauthorized person may have the stream key | The key was shared or exposed | Reset the stream key in YouTube settings and update the encoder with the new key before broadcasting. |
