How to Make a 24/7 YouTube Music Stream Restart After Internet Loss

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To make an OBS-based 24/7 YouTube music stream try to recover after an internet outage, open Settings > Advanced, enable Automatically Reconnect, and set the retry delay and maximum retries to cover the interruption you expect. The exact labels and defaults can vary by OBS version, so check the controls in your installed release and test the whole stream setup before relying on it.

Automatic reconnect can restore the encoder connection, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted playback or that YouTube will keep the same live event running. Check the Live Control Room and public watch page after reconnecting.

Configure OBS to reconnect after a drop

  1. Open the reconnect controls. In OBS Studio, go to Settings > Advanced and find the automatic reconnect options. Enable Automatically Reconnect. Labels and available controls may differ by OBS version; confirm them in the version you have installed.
  2. Set a retry delay and maximum retries. Choose a delay and enough attempts to cover the likely outage. There is no single retry setting that suits every connection, and you should not assume a particular default. A brief interruption and a prolonged ISP outage need different retry windows.
  3. Keep bitrate within the connection’s capacity. YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Account for other devices and users sharing the connection; their traffic reduces what is available to OBS. A bitrate your connection cannot sustain can cause dropped frames or disconnection.
  4. Use compatible streaming settings. Choose bitrate using YouTube’s guidance for your selected resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and RTMPS where supported. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates.
  5. Test before relying on the stream. Start an unlisted or otherwise safe test stream, briefly interrupt the internet connection, then restore it. Watch whether OBS reconnects, check stream health in Live Control Room, and confirm playback on the watch page. YouTube recommends testing the setup and monitoring stream health; recovery should be checked end to end, not inferred from OBS alone. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

What reconnect can—and cannot—restore

OBS reconnect tells the encoder to retry its connection to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS attributes intermittent disconnections and dropped frames to an unstable connection between the computer and remote ingest server, or to a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Severe frame loss can end in disconnection. The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide was published on 2024-09-30.

A successful encoder reconnect is not proof that viewers experienced seamless playback, that YouTube retained the original live event, or that every outage will recover the same way. Check Live Control Room health messages and the public watch page once the connection returns. YouTube’s archive behavior is not a restart guarantee: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that fact does not establish how an outage affects a live event.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not return

  • OBS shows dropped frames or disconnects again: treat this first as a network or bitrate problem. Lower the stream bitrate to one the upload connection can sustain, retain YouTube’s recommended headroom, and check whether other network users are consuming capacity. OBS notes that the fault can also lie beyond OBS itself; follow its configuration, software, hardware, and ISP troubleshooting guidance.
  • The encoder appears connected, but the stream is unhealthy or absent: inspect OBS output and CPU load, then check Live Control Room and the watch page. If the encoder is healthy but viewers still cannot receive the stream, test outbound internet connectivity.
  • OBS reports an error starting the stream: verify that the stream URL and key match the current values shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Update the key in the encoder if needed, and make sure the encoder software is current.
  • Outages keep exceeding your retry window: increase the configured retry coverage if your OBS version permits it, but understand that retries cannot repair a continuing ISP failure. If outbound connectivity remains unreliable, contact your ISP.

YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder software, output and CPU load, then testing outbound internet when the encoder appears healthy.

When a second encoder makes sense

A second encoder can provide a separate failover path, but it is an optional redundancy plan—not a prerequisite for OBS automatic reconnect. YouTube recommends testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and checking that playback rolls over to the backup. Test the actual player and channel behavior: a second encoder does not guarantee that every event behaves identically.

Approach What it covers Trade-off
OBS automatic reconnect Retries the local encoder’s connection after an interruption, provided the computer and internet connection recover. Depends on the local computer, power, OBS, and a usable outbound connection; configure and test retry behavior.
Backup encoder Can provide a tested alternate encoder path if the primary is stopped or loses its connection. Requires a second setup and failover testing; YouTube does not guarantee identical event behavior for every setup.
Cloud streaming service Can run a prerecorded-video stream without keeping a home computer or connection running. Check the service’s supported platform and workflow; hosted service behavior and pricing vary.
