How to Encode Devotional Videos for YouTube Live With FFmpeg on Ubuntu

To loop a prerecorded devotional video on YouTube Live from Ubuntu, use FFmpeg to send H.264 video and AAC audio over YouTube’s RTMPS ingest endpoint. Match the output frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval to YouTube’s guidance, and get the current stream key from Live Control Room. The command below is a template, not a tested guarantee; check your FFmpeg build and YouTube preview before relying on it.

Check the video before choosing settings

Do not assume the source is 1080p30 or even that it contains audio. Inspect its streams and properties first:

ffprobe -hide_banner input.mp4

Note the video resolution, frame rate, pixel format and whether an audio stream exists. Choose a compatible output from those facts and your machine’s encoding capacity. The example later in this article targets 1080p30 SDR; it may not suit a different source.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings

YouTube’s current Live encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). H.264 with AAC stereo is a practical compatibility-oriented choice for this example. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current recommendations.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Resolution, frame rate and bitrate

Set bitrate for the chosen resolution and frame rate; it is not a universal value. YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for H.264 720p at 30 fps. For other combinations, check YouTube’s current bitrate table. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default; manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key.

Keyframes and encoding details

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. With FFmpeg’s GOP setting, use approximately twice the frame rate: 60 frames at 30 fps or 50 at 25 fps. The corresponding command option is -g.

YouTube’s advanced settings recommend square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 44.1 kHz stereo audio. Its listed stereo audio bitrate recommendation is 128 kbps. Treat these as alignment targets where the encoder and source support them, not as a reason to force an unsuitable conversion.

Check FFmpeg and get the YouTube stream details

  1. Check the installed version and available encoders:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
    ffmpeg -version
    ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders

Confirm that your build includes libx264 before using the template below. Ubuntu installations and FFmpeg builds differ. The Ubuntu Noble FFmpeg codec manual documents H.264 VAAPI support where platform and driver support are present; that does not guarantee it is available on your machine.

  2. In YouTube Live Control Room, prepare the stream and copy its current ingest URL and private stream key. Choose the RTMPS endpoint if YouTube offers one. The YouTube LiveStreams API documentation explains ingestion URL handling; creators should use Live Control Room for the actual stream details.

Use FFmpeg to loop and stream the file

For a file with both video and audio, this illustrative template targets 1080p30 SDR and YouTube’s 5 Mbps H.264 recommendation for that mode:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -preset veryfast
  -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M -r 30 -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'

Replace input.mp4 with the file path and replace the final placeholder with the ingest address and key shown in Live Control Room. Do not paste a real key into a script you intend to share. This is an example assembled from published settings, not a tested command; it is not guaranteed that every Ubuntu FFmpeg build has libx264.

FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, so their position matters. Here, -stream_loop -1 is before -i because it is an input option; it repeats the file indefinitely. -re reads the input at its native rate for real-time output. The official FFmpeg documentation describes these option semantics.

The command sets a 30 fps output with -r 30, a 60-frame GOP with -g 60, AAC stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, and an FLV container for RTMP-family output. If you use a different frame rate, set -g to roughly twice that rate for two-second keyframe spacing, and select a bitrate from YouTube’s table for the chosen resolution and frame rate. Do not simply keep the 1080p30 bitrate for another mode.

If your file has no audio, remove the audio options and verify that your chosen YouTube stream setup accepts the resulting video-only stream. If it has an audio stream, confirm it is the intended devotional audio and that it remains synchronized and intelligible in the preview.

Verify the stream before depending on it

  1. Run the command and watch FFmpeg’s output, especially the reported encoding speed. If it cannot maintain real-time speed, the computer may not encode the selected settings quickly enough.

  2. Check the stream preview and status in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that video arrives, audio is present, the aspect ratio and colors look right, and the stream is stable before relying on it.

  3. If the machine or internet connection cannot sustain the output, reduce resolution or frame rate and choose the matching bitrate from YouTube’s table. The published settings do not guarantee that a particular computer or connection can maintain them; the reader’s upload capacity is not established by the encoder settings alone.

  4. For a single play rather than a repeat, remove -stream_loop -1. Decide how the broadcast should end when the file reaches its end, and test that behavior in advance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copyright and devotional content on YouTube Live

Encoding settings cannot establish whether you have the rights to stream the video, music, recording or other material. Before broadcasting, check permissions for every component, including devotional songs, performances, background music and recordings made by someone else. A devotional purpose does not by itself establish permission. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and any notices or restrictions shown for your channel and stream before going live.
