This works best when every file has matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. If they differ, normalize or re-encode them instead of relying on stream copy.
1. Prepare an ordered concat playlist
Create a plain-text file named playlist.ffconcat in the folder containing your videos. Put the exact header on its first line, then add one file directive for each MP4 in playback order:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
file 'clip-03.mp4'
The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 for automatic format recognition. Use relative paths where possible. Quote paths containing spaces or special characters, and check FFmpeg’s concat-demuxer path rules if a filename still causes an error.
The concat demuxer joins the files by adjusting their timestamps so each begins after the preceding file. It does not make incompatible media compatible: stream copy is appropriate only when the inputs have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Incorrect duration metadata can produce timestamp problems, glitches, or gaps at transitions; the concat format supports a duration directive to override an inaccurate duration.

2. Get the current YouTube Live ingest details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the current RTMPS ingestion address and stream name/key shown for that stream. YouTube documentation treats the ingestion address and stream name as separate values; an encoder may use them together as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. - Keep the stream key private. Do not put it in a public playlist, screenshot, or shared command history. Use the current values from Live Control Room rather than a saved endpoint or key that may have changed.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP, when available. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes the ingest address and stream name; its RTMPS guidance covers the secure ingest protocol.
3. Start FFmpeg for compatible files
With the playlist saved and YouTube’s current ingest details in hand, run this illustrative starting command from the directory containing playlist.ffconcat. Replace the URL with the exact endpoint and stream name/key format supplied for your stream:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat
-c copy -f flv "rtmps://INGESTION_URL/STREAM_NAME"
-rereads the file input at a real-time rate, rather than sending the video as fast as FFmpeg can process it.-stream_loop -1requests that the input loop indefinitely.-f concatselects the concat demuxer for the playlist.-safe 0permits paths outside the demuxer’s safe subset. Prefer safe relative paths and avoid this option if your playlist works without it.-c copycopies the existing audio and video streams without re-encoding. Use it only when the inputs are compatible with one another and with the chosen output.-f flvselects the output container commonly used for RTMP/RTMPS ingest.
This command is a starting point, not a tested command for every FFmpeg build or playlist. Verify option behavior against your installed FFmpeg version, and test the exact source files and endpoint before a public broadcast. If the server does not receive a stream, confirm the endpoint, stream name/key, protocol, and TLS connection.
4. When stream copy is unsuitable
Files with different resolutions, frame rates, audio layouts, codecs, or time bases may fail or produce problems when concatenated with -c copy. Normalize the files to matching stream properties first, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter and re-encode. FFmpeg’s FAQ on joining video files identifies the concat filter as the route when re-encoding is needed; the concat demuxer documentation explains playlist syntax, compatibility, timestamps, and duration overrides.

Re-encoding gives you control over a consistent output format, but it uses more processing power and introduces an encoding step. Choose output settings that YouTube accepts and that your sustained upload connection can carry reliably. Do not assume a higher bitrate will improve the broadcast if the connection cannot sustain it.
5. Set output quality and test the broadcast
YouTube’s current guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube Help lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate; these are encoder settings in YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee that any particular connection can sustain them.

Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate supported consistently by your actual upload capacity. A wired Ethernet connection can be a practical way to reduce local wireless variability, but it does not increase the bandwidth supplied by your internet connection. YouTube recommends testing before going live; its Help guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Include representative video motion and audio in your test, then watch YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
See YouTube Help’s live encoder settings for current ingest and bitrate guidance. Check the values again in Live Control Room before a broadcast because encoder requirements and interface labels can change.

6. Troubleshoot common problems
FFmpeg rejects the playlist or files do not join cleanly
- Check that
ffconcat version 1.0is the exact first line and that each path points to an existing file. - Compare the files’ stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Stream copy needs matching inputs; normalize or use the concat filter with re-encoding when they differ.
- If transitions glitch or leave gaps, check duration metadata. Where it is inaccurate, the concat playlist’s
durationdirective can provide an override.
YouTube shows no incoming stream or rejects the connection
- Copy the current ingestion address and stream name/key from Live Control Room again; correct typos and remove stale saved values.
- Confirm that you are using the intended protocol and RTMPS endpoint, and that the connection can establish TLS.
- Check YouTube’s stream status while FFmpeg is running. Do not share the stream key while asking for help.
Frames drop or stream health is poor
- Check sustained upload capacity, then lower bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot reliably support the selected settings.
- Run a test before the scheduled broadcast and monitor YouTube’s health messages rather than relying only on FFmpeg’s local output.
There is no audio
- Inspect each MP4 to confirm it contains an audio stream; one silent or differently structured file can affect a copied playlist.
- Check audio mapping and output compatibility. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, so re-encode audio if the copied source format is unsuitable.
7. Keep the broadcast compliant
Looping a file does not grant permission to use its contents. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to broadcast, and make sure your planned use meets YouTube’s copyright rules. A technically healthy live stream can still face copyright claims or other platform enforcement. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization policies are separate from whether FFmpeg can deliver the stream; repeating a video does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization.
Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and channel monetization policies for your content and channel circumstances before running a long loop.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want an FFmpeg process and a computer at home to stay on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so your home computer and connection do not have to stay running. It supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
