A YouTube Content ID claim can monetize, track, or block a video, and its effect may vary by country or region. If it monetizes the music, the rights holder may receive ad revenue; a YouTube Partner Program creator may sometimes share revenue with the music publisher. There is no guaranteed split, and a claim does not mean the creator always loses all revenue.
What a music claim can do to ad revenue
YouTube says a Content ID claimant can apply one of three policies: monetize the video by running ads, track viewership, or block the video. A tracked or monetized video can remain viewable with an active claim, while a block policy can make it unavailable in some or all territories. Policies can differ by country or region, so a single claim may not have the same result for every viewer. YouTube’s guide to copyright claims notes that music is the most common category of claim for which monetize is applied.
- Monetize: Ads may run and the rights holder may receive revenue. A creator in the YouTube Partner Program may be able to share revenue with the music publisher, but the outcome and share are not guaranteed.
- Track: The claimant tracks viewership; the video may remain viewable with the claim.
- Block: The video may be blocked, sometimes only in specified territories.
A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright removal request or a copyright strike. Check the claim details in YouTube Studio for the claimant, policy, and affected territories rather than assuming the result from the presence of a claim alone.
Live enforcement and the archived replay are separate
YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the streamer. If the content continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. This can happen independently of a later Content ID claim on an archived replay.

YouTube states that Content ID claims on a livestream replay are made after the livestream ends, if the creator chose to archive it. In its guidance on copyright issues with live streams, YouTube says: “Content ID claims are only made after you complete your live streams, if you decide to archive the video.”
If you have permission to use the music
A licence does not necessarily stop YouTube’s live matching system from interrupting a broadcast. YouTube advises creators to ask the rights owner to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm that your permission covers livestream use and any archived replay, and ask the owner about allowlisting before you go live.

Keep documentation of your permission and verify the territory and uses it covers.
What happens to revenue while a claim is disputed
If you dispute or appeal a claim, ads may continue while revenue is held separately during review. YouTube says the held revenue is paid to the appropriate party once the dispute is resolved. The timing depends on when you act:

- If you take no action, revenue held after a claim is released to the claimant after five days.
- If you dispute within five days of the claim, the hold starts from the date the claim was placed.
- If you dispute more than five days after the claim, the hold starts from the date you disputed it.
Dispute only when you have a good-faith basis, such as rights that actually cover the use. YouTube does not mediate copyright disputes. If a dispute is invalid, the copyright owner may request removal; a valid removal request results in a strike. See YouTube’s claim guidance before deciding what to do.
Creator Music does not provide a general livestream revenue-sharing route
YouTube’s Creator Music usage requirements say eligible revenue-sharing tracks cannot be used in livestreams or Shorts. Track eligibility and restrictions can vary, so check the terms for an individual track; do not assume that a Creator Music revenue-sharing option for an eligible video also applies to a live broadcast.

How to check a particular claim
- In YouTube Studio, open the affected video or archived livestream and inspect its copyright details.
- Identify the claimant, the applied policy (monetize, track, or block), and any territory-specific restrictions.
- For a live interruption, distinguish the live matching action from a Content ID claim on the replay; the replay claim, if there is one, comes after the broadcast ends.
- If you have a licence, confirm that it covers live and archived use in the relevant territories, then ask the owner whether your channel can be allowlisted.
- Dispute only if you can support your rights-based position. If the claim is accurate, review the claimant’s policy and your available options in Studio rather than assuming a dispute will restore revenue.
