If an OBS Media Source freezes during a 24/7 YouTube stream, first check whether it is frozen in OBS’s own preview. If it is, troubleshoot playback, the file or decoder, and OBS performance. If it is still moving in OBS but YouTube reports a poor feed, investigate encoding and the connection to YouTube instead. This distinction helps you test one cause at a time rather than restarting or changing everything at once.
Find where the picture stops moving
Compare the source in the OBS preview with the broadcast in YouTube Studio or the Live Control Room, then check OBS’s status indicators and YouTube’s stream-health messages. The point is to locate the failure, not assume that every viewer report means the media file stopped.
- The Media Source is frozen in OBS: start with its playback properties, the media file or decoder, and OBS rendering or encoding load.
- OBS preview is moving, but YouTube reports a poor or missing feed: check OBS network status and YouTube’s stream-health messages. This points away from the source file and toward the output or ingest path.
- OBS and YouTube appear healthy, but only some viewers see buffering: consider differences in viewer devices and network connections. OBS notes that viewer buffering can occur without OBS dropped frames.
These checks narrow the likely fault class; they cannot identify every failure without the specific stream, logs, and viewer conditions. OBS Media Sources, OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting, OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting, and YouTube Help describe the separate playback, performance, connection, and stream-health checks.
Check the Media Source properties
In OBS, open the Media Source’s Properties and verify the options against how the file is meant to play. Labels and defaults below reflect OBS’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022; check the current interface if it differs.

Loop and restart behavior
- Loop: turn this on if the file should start again when playback reaches its end. OBS documents this as off by default. A clip that has simply finished can look like a freeze if looping was not intended or enabled.
- Restart playback when source becomes active: this controls whether playback restarts when the source is visible in the current scene. OBS documents it as on by default. If playback stops or jumps after changing scenes, check how this setting and scene visibility interact with your setup.
- Show nothing when playback ends: when enabled, the source hides at the end of the file rather than leaving its last frame visible. Check this if the apparent freeze occurs at a clip’s end.
Hardware decoding and inactive files
- Use hardware decoding when available: this optional setting uses a suitable GPU decoder for supported file types and is off by default. Test it both on and off; it is not a universal fix, and it only applies when compatible decoding hardware is available.
- Close file when inactive: this unloads the file while the source is hidden or off-scene to free memory, but OBS warns that it may take a short time to appear again. If the problem clusters around scene changes, temporarily turn this option off as a controlled test. Account for the possible memory trade-off.
Try VLC Video only as a controlled alternative
OBS documents VLC Video as an alternative source for playlists and extended media support. It requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Its Loop Playlist option is on by default, and its visibility behavior is configurable. Switching source types changes the playback path and adds a VLC dependency, so test it to isolate a playback issue rather than treating it as a guaranteed repair. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
Distinguish playback trouble from rendering or encoding overload
OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. If OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload, a complex scene or competition for GPU resources may be part of the problem. That is different from a file that visibly stops advancing in the Media Source preview.

- Reduce competing GPU use and simplify the scene; remove sources and filters that are not needed.
- If the stream does not need the media’s original resolution, try lower-resolution media.
- If rendering or encoding remains overloaded, consider lowering the output resolution or frame rate. OBS’s troubleshooting guide suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
These changes can reduce output quality or smoothness. Make them when performance indicators support that diagnosis, and change one variable at a time so you can tell whether the result improved. Follow OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide.
Investigate the network only when the evidence points there
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. This concerns the OBS-to-YouTube connection. It does not explain a source image that is already frozen inside OBS.

- Check OBS network status and YouTube stream-health messages before changing the source file.
- Compare the configured bitrate with the connection’s stable upload capacity. OBS recommends lowering bitrate when needed.
- Check whether a VPN, security software, or network-management software is affecting the connection.
- Use a wired connection if the network path is unstable; Wi-Fi may be less reliable.
- Dynamic bitrate can lower quality to fall back when conditions worsen, but OBS describes it as a fallback rather than a fix for the underlying connection problem.
Lower bitrate can reduce image quality. Find the relevant checks in OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

YouTube’s currently published encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not over 4 seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current YouTube table for your chosen combination rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. Set a bitrate the connection can sustain reliably.

YouTube says it automatically transcodes live video into different output formats. Its guidance does not specify a special bitrate for 24/7 streams or a guaranteed preflight duration. Before going live, YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the planned content, then monitoring stream health and messages. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; recommendations can change.
For broad viewer compatibility, weigh bitrate against resolution and frame rate. A healthy ingest does not guarantee every viewer has a smooth connection: OBS notes that viewers can buffer without OBS reporting dropped frames. See OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting.

Use a controlled troubleshooting order
- Locate the freeze: compare the OBS source preview, OBS output/status, YouTube stream health, and affected viewers’ playback.
- Check playback behavior: confirm Loop, restart-on-activation, end-of-playback behavior, hardware decoding, and close-file behavior as relevant to the symptom.
- Check performance indicators: if OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload, simplify the scene or lower demanding output settings.
- Check connection indicators: if OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube shows an unhealthy feed, assess bitrate and network stability.
- Change one variable and observe: note whether the change fixes the symptom and what it costs, such as a reload delay, lower quality, added software dependency, or interruption during a live stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
